Eberechi Eze

Called this ages ago. So boringly obvious what was going to happen, Arѕe just sat back, letting Spurs do the legwork and then sniped when they knew the offer they had to match or better. They've known all along that they were holding the trump card—the player wanted them. We ask for it over and over again and we never learn. Quite why Levy has this rep as the master negotiator playing 4D chess is beyond me. His style works for selling but is so counterproductive when we need to buy quality. He often seems to think he holds better cards than he does, as well, just like when he was lowballing Villa for Grealish.
Low balling for Grealish? You mean when a price had been agreed, new owners came in and jacked the price to beyond what we thought was reasonable? Fair play they got a £100 million for him but City look mugs for paying it.

The over reaction on all sides here is laughable. Yes we got shafted by Eze but not because of anything we could have done. Eze was hanging out until deadline day hoping Arsenal would move for him. It happened early, that is all.

He thought he had them over a barrel. Then the barrel was emptied on his head.

🔑 Main Story: Arsenal Hijack Tottenham’s Deal for Eberechi Eze

  • Arsenal have agreed a deal with Crystal Palace for Eberechi Eze, worth around £60m + £7.5m in add-ons.
  • Eze has agreed personal terms and is expected to play Palace’s European fixture before completing a medical.
  • This comes after Tottenham had already agreed terms with Palace and the player – but Arsenal swooped in late, triggered by Kai Havertz’s knee injury.
  • Crucial factor: Eze always preferred Arsenal (boyhood Arsenal fan, ex-academy player).

⚪ Tottenham’s Perspective

  • Spurs fans are furious after missing out on Gibbs-White and now Eze.
  • Both James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are out with long-term knee injuries, leaving Spurs short of creativity.
  • Despite Spurs agreeing a deal, Arsenal’s late move + Eze’s preference meant Levy & Frank couldn’t close it.
  • Analysts stressed: Not really Levy’s fault – Tottenham did enough under normal circumstances.
  • Spurs will now target alternative creative midfielders (names like Akliouche of Monaco mentioned).

🔴 Arsenal’s Perspective

  • Seen as a dream signing, uniting the fanbase – every Arsenal fan wanted him.
  • Adds maverick creativity, unpredictability, and dribbling ability Arsenal lacked (too structured in attack).
  • Will ease the pressure on Saka and Gyökeres, creating more chaos in attack.
  • Arsenal have spent £250m+ this summer – must now focus on outgoings (Vieira, Nelson, Zinchenko, possibly Martinelli links).
  • Financially: OK on Premier League PSR, but tight on UEFA FFP → need better sales.

🏴‍☠️ Rivalry Angle

  • Arsenal hijacking Spurs’ top target compared to famous transfers (e.g., Sol Campbell, Petit stories).
  • Adds spice to the North London Derby – Spurs fans expected to vent frustration.
  • For Eze, this feels like “unfinished business” with Arsenal, fulfilling his boyhood dream.

🏴 England Implications

  • At Spurs, Eze might’ve been more of a main man.
  • At Arsenal, competition is tougher but he’ll still get plenty of minutes across 4 competitions.
  • Playing at a higher level, in the Champions League, should boost his England prospects ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

⚡ Quick Hits

  • Risk factor: Playing for Palace tonight before medical → but reflects Eze’s loyalty and desire to leave clubs on good terms.
  • Arsenal’s new sporting director Andrea Berta praised for quick execution; now judged on sales.
  • Spurs left short creatively, making Frank’s job harder – but may pivot to other targets.

✅ Bottom Line:

  • Arsenal pulled off a dramatic hijack, getting a player who fits their system and fulfills Eze’s dream.
  • Tottenham did little wrong – just unlucky Eze’s heart was elsewhere.
  • Adds major narrative fuel to the Arsenal-Spurs rivalry this season.

That may be absolutely right. But we’ve wasted a week or more chasing him. Maddison has been injured for nearly 3 weeks. It’s 5/6 weeks since the Gibbs-White stuff. If Eze was always going to Arsenal, where’s the midfielder we so desperately need?

He thought he had them over a barrel. Then the barrel was emptied on his head.

Yeah - it amazes me how people think the only thing we could have done is the exact thing that Levy did. And therefore it must have been correct.

We could have moved more decisively for Grealish. We may have paid a bit more. But he thought we could squeeze them. And we lost out.

I think it’s a great point that @DubaiSpur makes - you’re going to run this play of squeezing everything you can from a deal you have to be damn sure you hold all the cards, and that the game won’t change around you. Sometimes it’s like Levy operates as if he’s the only player that needs to win the transaction, rather than in a complex game with multiple moving parts.

They both do/would have competed with Sarr for our #8 spot.
Bergval was a long way from ready at the start of last season. He is still quite a long way from being ready now. I refuse to believe that had we signed Gallagher then we wouldn’t have signed Bergval, IMO Bergval was always one for the future that we ended up using early due to having an undercooked squad.

We could’ve had him for £20m but mucked around making offers like £8m and Josh Onamah for weeks and weeks. This for Poch’s top target to replace Eriksen. Ridiculous stuff from a man who thought he had all the cards.

N ail on the head, that is actually what happened. Deal was agreed until the new owner came in and upped the price.
Deal was agreed several weeks after we started making insulting bids…. We eventually bid their asking price just as noises were coming out that Villa had found new investment and ownership.

We even eventually ended up bidding over £30m for Grealish once the owners were in place. Quite why a player is worth £30m to us at the end of the window but not worth £20m at the start of the window i’ll never know…. But I suppose Daniel has to ‘win’ the negotiation!

Wrap it up anyway you want too, the deal was agreed, hands shook new owners came in pulled the deal and put the price up.

Further to this (and quite interesting IMO) was that Maddison was our second choice for this role that summer.

Leicester were decisive and wrapped him up for just over £20m really quickly during the period that we were fudging around offering £8m, 100 Spurs training kits, a pre season friendly and Alfie Whiteman on loan to Villla and then going back a day later increasing our bid by a bag of footballs

Yep…. Once we brick ourselves knowing Villa were about to come into lots of money. No reason why that couldn’t happen weeks and weeks before (like the way Leicester quickly wrapped up Maddison).

We blew that deal badly and really let Poch down. It was an easy deal to do at not a massive amount of money but Daniel has to ‘win the negotiation’ of course.

Some lads at work asked me why I wasn't more upset about the Eze deal falling through - but after 30 years of following Spurs and football transfers, you just know that everything can and will happen. There is never a time to get excited about a signing until he shows that shirt with the gaffer. Don't watch all the compilations and swallow every piece of info on the player. It's pointless. We may fail. We will fail. Such is the nature of football transfers.

Don't expect anything and you won't be disappointed.

You are missing the point [deliberately maybe]. They HAD excepted our bid the new owners tried to change the terms and Levy told them to stick it.
