Christian Eriksen

I hope you're right and he tries something along those lines. I'd love to see 2 of Ndombele/Lo Celso/Winks in the midfield with a quality DM behind them. That could even be Dier if he has the help of having that quality in front of him.

We need to sort the FBs out
I’ve said it so much lately but we’re playing a CB at LB because we can’t play two proper FBs... it’s soooo unbalanced it’s scary

We haven't seen anything for at least 2 years to suggest that Dier is the answer in the centre of our midfield.

I agree that Dier isn't up to snuff, I'm just giving him the chance to fail rather than simply writing him off.

Either way a mobile DM along the lines of Soumare that you have mentioned is my main desire.

So you would rather a player who is probably worth £70+ million on the open market and is arguably the best midfield player at Spurs not to sign a new contract and to leave on a free transfer?

I can't think of too many explanations for why yours isn't a strange point of view to be honest.

I'd rather we let the spineless gimp go, remove him from the squad and move on.

I'd rather we didn't bring ourselves so low as to bend to the whims of someone for whom we are a fall back option.

I'd rather we didn't rely on a player who has proven he will not step up to meet his potential, and proven he will allow his form to belly flop if he doesn't feel like performing.

And I'd rather we put our time and energy into younger, more exciting players with whom we could reach greater heights.

In short, Eriksen is old Spurs, possibly the poster boy for our "nearly, but not quite" image the last few years - he doesn't represent the future at all.

Giving him a deal would be a backward step.

Your so far off into your own alternative universe that I won't bother to comment any further.

You aren't naïve enough to think that any player at Spurs wouldn't want to leave to go and play for Real Madrid or Barcelona are you?

Giving Eriksen a deal would be signing up one of the best 5 creative midfield players in the Premier League and do so without having to pay a transfer fee to do so.

If Eriksen has proven that he won't step up and meet his potential then we might as well sell every single player in the squad other than perhaps Harry Kane as there isn't a single player in our squad who has performed as consistently well as Eriksen has over a number of seasons.

It's strange that you seem happy for Dier to be given time to find his form, even though he has never been and never will be even half the player that Eriksen is. Of course Dier is never going to have the same decision to make as Eriksen as the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid are never going to even look twice at Eric Dier.

And yet felt the need to comment all the same?

I stand by it. On principle he needs to go. And in practice, it's time for something new.

In principle I agree with you, but letting Eriksen go on a free is the worst outcome for Spurs, and that's what's important for me.

If we get him signed up, that's like a £70m player for free. And he's a player who knows the PL and who can deliver the goods. Turning that down, is insane IMO.

Then if he doesn't perform, that's £70m we can reinvest, as opposed to nothing at all.

It’s a no brainer for me.

No, Im not. Never have been. Completely wrong angle of attack there.

My issue is not, and never has been, a player wanting to move on from the club.

It is, however, a player letting their performance levels completely tank, while willfully avoiding a contract to screw the club out of a fee.

Modric showed how it can and should be done. Eriksen has shamed himself and insulted us.

I personally think its a very damaging thing to the club/morale to let a player do that, fail in his quest to leave, then be rewarded with a pay rise and cushy contract.

Giving Eriksen a deal would be signing up one of the best 5 creative midfield players in the Premier League and do so without having to pay a transfer fee to do so.

It would also be keeping a player we have effectively replaced, adding to an already congested midfield, and showing that its ok to act the clam because you'll get your way anyway.

Theres more to good management/squad management, IMO, than simply collecting players like panini stickers.

Comparing players to players is one thing, comparing them to themselves and their potential is another.

Eriksen, while clearly one of our best players the last 5 years, has never really reached his peak. And has now regularly gone missing for us at key times. When the team is set up so much to suit him, when he fails - we fail. I think thats an issue that has been addressed (or attempted) in signings like Lo Celso and NDombele - more all round skilled midfielders than having a specialist playmaker.

The rest of the squad? Irrelevant really, seeing as this is the Eriksen thread. Even so, there are some that have more cache on their side, some that are performing, and some - like Eriksen - for whom that time has passed and could/should move on.

Ah yes, lets have a dig at Dier - there wasnt the opportunity or need for it - but you did it anyway.

Completely different players, completely different jobs, and completely different attitudes. I really dont see the comparison to be honest.

Dier lost form through illness, not ambivalence - theres a major difference for one, and a big reason to offer some patience with him.

While speaking of your pet hates - I notice you didnt take the opportunity to have a pop at Winks too. Is it perhaps because Eriksen (in the first half mostly) did absolutely everything you slate WInks (rather unfairly) for? Never have I seen the ball go backwards so unnecessarily...

As Ive said, I think we have effectively replaced him. I dont see how he fits, how he is used, or how he compliments without pushing others out.

And thats aside from the ideas of what he represents, and rewarding what he has done.

If its just a financial transaction then of course, no brainer - but IMO its much more than that. The squad is a balancing act right now and IMO Eriksen tips it the wrong way.

His being there will absolutely compromise Alli/Lo Celso/NDombele, either in playing time, opportunity or position.

What the fudge do you know about what has caused Eriksen to have a dip in form? You call it ambivalence just because it suits your pathetic agenda against one of the best players we've had for a long time.
So not performing for years is ok, because Dier is "loyal". My dog is loyal, but that doesn't make him a useful footballer!

No agenda whatsoever, pathetic or otherwise, unless you count wanting what's best for the club agenda?

He wanted to leave, fine. His form went to utter brick. Not fine. I call it ambivalence, but it really doesn't matter. Point is he let his standards go completely.

Dier has not "not performed for years", and patience with his struggle - medical struggle - is as much about empathy for his situation as it is a belief he deserves patience in part due to his commitment.

Not even remotely comparable

How many years should Dier be given then?
