Another shooting in Murica

Look at their attitude to other nations, to war, to guns, to religion... It basically just hasnt changed.

In 300 years they have barely evolved socially, and yet the whole world has changed.

American gun laws and attitudes are an anachronism.

Maybe it is because of this paranoia. Personally I think its more likely no one was ever brave enough to take their guns away and now they cant.

The greatest nation on earth bar none.

Not a great nation if you are poor though. I'd rather be poorer in the UK or Western Europe than the USA. And if you are rich, then anywhere can be great.

But it's true, show me a greater nation? It's an incredible country.

"The measure of a civilization is how it treats its weakest members"

how are you judging greatness?

social mobility - https://www.theguardian.com/business/2010/mar/10/oecd-uk-worst-social-mobility

Economic freedom - http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking

inequality - http://www.oecd.org/social/inequality.htm#income

Prison population - https://www.statista.com/statistics/300986/incarceration-rates-in-oecd-countries/

Literacy & numeracy - https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/02/which-countries-have-the-best-literacy-and-numeracy-rates/

all from a quick google so not going to stand behind the numbers.

The American dream has been dead for a number of years, exceptionalism is allowing the government to hide this fact.

EDIT- I am not saying the US has not got a lot of good things about it but to boldly state and believe it is the greatest nation on earth allows those in power to excuse the bad stuff.

Yes, it's not a great place to be poor.

It's for that reason that I think other 1st world nations are better countries. There's good and bad everywhere but if I was to define a great nation, it couldn't be one where it is so harsh to be poor when there is so much wealth in the nation and such a ridiculous amount of money spent on the military.

america isn't great, but it should be, and it could be, really really easily

america will be exactly what it wants to be, it's held back solely by its own ambition

How do you define greatness in this context?

The answer is in reality there is no such thing as a "greatest country on Earth". Especially a country with such archaic, outdated views on race, gun control, abortion, sexuality, gender equality, religion, climate change and foreign policy. And I say this as someone who loves visiting America, I have an uncle and auntie who have lived there since the 80s and have visited them and various other places in America just about every other year since they emigrated. I'd even go as far as saying I could see myself retiring there and living there during the winter months (somewhere warm like Florida) but I would absolutely not move there under the current cirucmstances and raise a family there.

I think its mixture of all those things, ask 100 Americans and you'd probably get many different answers. Of course America is largely small towns so a lot of people hunt, and I think if owning and using guns is something that you have grown up with then having them around is just part of normal life. I would add though that there are a large percentage of Americans who don't own guns and a even larger percentage who would like to see a ban on Automatic/ machine gun types of weapons.
There are guns (rifles and shotguns) in about half of households here in Norway, which is probably on par with the USA. Why then are there over 1000 times more gun crimes in the USA? I can tell you! Because of gun control, and the training you have to go through to be licensed to have a firearm. You are taught how to use the gun for hunting deer and birds, not as a weapon against other human beings!
