The best Spurs team of all time - right back

Who is the best right back to play for Spurs?

yep, tricky

I guess it comes down to the minimum number of forwards and wide players we put in, we'll probably only have two left at that point

the common formation shift between the modern day and the double side confuses things as well

I considered that a bit before opting for 4-4-2. Whatever I went for would present problem but this seemed to present the least.

The problem with going back to the days of Baker, Ramsey and Kinnear is that the football of those days was almost a different sport to today's physical and technical requirements. If time travel was possible, would they be able to get into the current side? Not too sure to be honest.

Stevie Perryman would, though... which is why he would take my vote; to me, between 81 to 84 he was the best right back in England and it was criminal that he never got an England cap in that position. Plus you cannot have an all time Spurs team without Mr. Tottenham in it, can you?

There are a few RB's who warrant a mention ( imo), I never saw Alf Ramsey play so can not really say much about him. The ones I have seen who I believe to be worthy of praise are

Peter Baker : There was nothing flash about this guy but he was important player in our Double team, he always did the simple thing and did a lot of good work with little fuss.

Joe Kinnear : In todays game there are a lot of young players who make the break through early and become regulars but in Joe's time it was not common at all but he made is debue at 20 and became our first choice RB and kept that posistion for the next 9 years winning four trophys.
Along with Cyril he gave us ( imo) our best pair of Fullbacks and I will always remember the chant of " have a go Joe" as he marauded down our right flank.

Stevie Perryman : He ended up as our RB but he was better known as a hard working M/F player and also probably our best ever capt. I have never seen a player who used to work as hard as him and his never die attitude was brilliant to watch.

Steve Carr : I believe he won our player of the season at least once and stood out in a lot of our games ( I will never forget his goal against Utd) but its fair to say that we had a poor side during that spell and he stood out because of that.

Kyle Walker. I am afraid we live in a era where a lot of fans feel the need to have a spacegoat and for some reason Walker seems to have replaced Jenas as the boo boy. However ( imo) he is as good as any RB in the Prem and a lot of the stupid comments that are made about being brain dead etc should be directed at the users more then not.

But I have to pick one so for me it would be Kinnear.

We've rarely had outstanding full backs during my time watching Spurs (sixties onwards).
I feel you have to judge players' merits against the peers of their time, rather than modern day standards.
I love Perryman as much as the next Spurs fan - read Hunter Davies's book to learn what a decent human being he is, while his loyalty to the club is exemplary - but the fact remains he played in a lot of positions and for none of them was he considered good enough for England.
I never saw Ramsey or Baker, but in all probability Ramsey, for one, was more highly rated versus his peers than Perryman. Also, if we are going to start shifting players around to their back-up positions, we'd have Hoddle in goal and Ledley and He Who Shall Not Be Named at full-back, just to make sure they get in the team.
I thought Danny Thomas was starting to show a lot of promise for us before his career was cruelly ended by injury but if you held a gun to my head then I would have to choose between Kinnear and Carr.
Carr is more of a highlights reel player, perhaps, and maybe he shone because he was one of the few decent players in a poor team, whereas Kinnear held down a place in an era when Spurs could have gone out and got virtually any right back they wanted, but didn't.

We're going to have a think about this when it comes to midfield. I'm happy to split the central midfield positions or we could take them as one and select the two most popular.

Speaking for my self I have seen some great midfield players over the years, its no going to be easy to choose two.

That was until Ashley Young destroyed him and we had to get Corluka on who dealt with him superbly at Villa Park. Charlie had previously been given the run around by Young in an earlier game

Yeah I remember, Harry hauled him off after about half an hour and he never recovered after that

No. It is going to be tough enough to narrow it down to six or so to vote on.

I think that we'll take CB, CM and CF as a pair, have two votes each and the top two get picked.

THIS

I'd go for Joe Kinnear, its close with him and Carr as others have said Carr was in some poor sides, Danny Blachflower rated Baker and I thought Danny Thomas had the making of a great player until his horrendous injury after his assault by a QPR nobody.

He was only 26 when he had to quit and he was really looking the real deal. I am with you he was a very good player who had the ability to become a great one.

During my time watching Spurs it would have to be Carr. For one or two seasons he was unstoppable. Maruading down the right hand side and solid in defence as well. From my past it would be Perryman, he played a lot of games there and was always dependable. Also I dont think he will get picked in midfield and he deserves to be in any all time 11.

So its Perryman for me.

How are people voting on this? I don't like voting for players I've never actually seen play live, however, that wouldn't leave me with "the best" Spurs team. I guess you've got to vote on reputation as well.

For that reason I'm going for Perryman.

Perryman was impeccable. Does anyone remember a brain far from him?

Similar to Corluka in that they read the fame exceptionally and so coped with faster wingers.
