Re: The summer transfer thread, Dembele pg 1277 #Levytime

This.

Whos the back up for Walker and Assou ekotto? Rose and Naughton? They are not proven.

We dont have back ups for Lennon or Bale. We need a winger or two especially these two tend to pick up injuries.

Who's back up for Cole? Bertrand? and Who's back up to Azpilicueta (who's unproven anyway)? Ferreira? Hardly the best back up there neither

Re: The summer transfer thread, Dembele pg 1277 #Levytime

Naughton was very good at Norwich last year and I think is a good understudy. We arent in the position where we will have absolute top quality in reserve as yet. Naughton can also cover left back. Not a fan of Rose though.

I didnt see much of Naughton but apparently he did alright. Good enough for big games?

There are 38 premierleague games, i bet you that they'll be 15 games when either or Bale or Lennon will be unvailable. Thats one third of the games so i think we need another winger.

There is point moving Rafa there. We've seen in the past that it f*cks up all the team.

He's backup to Ivanovic I would have thought. Ferreira is just backup.

If the prospective (and let's face it, quite fanciful rather than just plain hopeful) signings come in then we'll be in a position where we were quite a few years ago where our second XI makes for very good reading even without really dipping into our youth players!

I've added Lloris but that's it - we are sure to have more signings IMO but here's where we are now

GK - Lloris - Friedel

CB1 - Vertonghen - Gallas

CB2 - Kaboul - Caulker

LB - Assou-Ekotto - Rose

RB - Walker - Naughton

DCM1 - Sandro - Parker

ACM2 - Dembele - Livermore

LW - Bale - Townsend

RW - Lennon - Dos Santos

SS - Sigurdsson - Van Der Vaart

CF - Adebayor - Defoe

Giving us a second string side of

-------------------- Friedel --------------------
-- Naughton - Caulker - Gallas --- Rose --
---------------- Parker ----------------------
------------------------- Livermore -----------
Dos Santos ----- VDV ------------ Townsend
-------------------- Defoe

Not too shabby! Certainly stronger already than the sides we were fielding in the wafer last season don't you think?

Re: The summer transfer thread, Dembele pg 1277 #Levytime

Moutinho tells me Rafa is off, which would be a bitter sweet case of affairs.

I think he'd start. I think they are going to try putting Ivanovic at centre half, definitely his better position

Well, Azpilicueta is a back up! Ivanovic is the right back. They have Cahill, david Luiz and Terry at CB.

And bertrand is a better back up than Rose.

I think he is good enough to play in big games and play very well in them. It may be asking a bit much for him to perform consistently well in a number of big games as he is a little inconcistent but he has talent. Additionally he is english, used to the league and already owned by us and seems to content with his role (signed a new contract recently).

I fully agree on wide players, Rafa may do better out wide as part of a 3 then last season when it was wide as part of a 4 though.

Re: The summer transfer thread, Dembele pg 1277 #Levytime

Dembele can play numerous positions - not just CM

Yes he can - but CM is where he is at his absolute best.

If we wanted an AM we should buy an AM, not a CM who can do that job
If we wanted a winger/wing forward we should buy one, not a CM who can do the job...

He is better back up, but Vertonghen is more than capable.

Re: The summer transfer thread, Dembele pg 1277 #Levytime

I don't see any reason why Dembele and Moutinho can't work along with Sandro/Livermore in the same midfield, it's not like they are identical players. Lets not forget just how talented these two are either, you can't turn your nose up at either of them if we had a chance of signing either - this would be beyond our expectations of replacing Modric with these two. Yes we have other areas that needs addressing, but its pretty clear there will be more incomings....

Will there? After £25m spent on Moutinho how much to you suppose is left in the pot?

Im not turning my nose up at Moutinho (I think he is a fabulous player and had him as #1 choice to replace Modric), Im just utterly baffled at signing him (if we do), Dembele and Sigurdsson in one window when (considering the squad already in place) it basically dictates one (or more) of them is on the bench.

Whilst using that money on CM when we have gravely pressing need in wing and forward positions

Re: The summer transfer thread, Dembele pg 1277 #Levytime

Indeed.

If you look at our first choice back four as:

Walker - Kaboul - Gallas - Assou-Ekotto

And our second as:

Naughton - Dawson - Caulker - Vertonghen

Then I'd say that makes fairly nice reading :)
