Didn't really mind being lost in it though. Would have preferred to have Japanese with subtitles, think that would have made it clearer than dubbing. Looking online afterwards some were saying this plot point was explicitly stated (my dad also said this) whilst others said it was just the bit where the boy narrates 'she looks exactly like mum' or whatever... Im a big foreign cinema fan and watch an awful lot of subtitled films. But personally I'll always watch animation dubbed (though never live action). I think it's actually much better that way. Ghibli do the dubbing exceptionally well too

Seems there is a big argument going on at the moment regarding dubbed animation. Seems the localisers (who rewrite the script into english and make the jokes more accessible to a western audience). Have been taking a bit of liberties and twisting the adaptions to fit their political beliefs. Seems the japanese creators of them weren't too happy and have replaced them with ai.

Point one is an interesting one, I guess that does add context for a bit more explanation of what the film was actually getting at.

Point two though, it was pretty clear that the stepmother was his mother's sister but I just didn't get how the real mother was there. The easy way out is that it's not meant to make sense, I love a bit of magic realism and there can't always be a logical explanation by the way we understand our own world....But it just seemed like a lot of stuff happened "for some reason" and it was odd for oddness' sake. I do want to try it again though to see if it's me more than the film

I think part of it is just go with it and enjoy the place. But specifically I think I assumed that when the mother ascended near the beginning, that she was some sort of demigod. And I think the portal place later on was playing with time more than realities, hence her being there as a younger version of herself.
 
So Oppenheimer cleaned up the golden globes. Thought it was a good film and no doubt Nolan is a hell of a director but there’s just something about his films I can’t latch on to, his films are quite cold. IMO Inception was his last great film.
 
Managed to catch Wonka last week.

Felt a bit underwhelmed at the end. I dont know what as I was expecting but it was not a patch on the first one, or even the one with Johnny Depp.

Chalamet played a decent young Wonka. From the trailer I thought the Hugh Grant characther would be funnier. There were a couple of decent songs in there especially the opening tune, but the storyline let the whole thing down for me

Yeh, was a bit meh, enjoyable watch with the kids though

I like generally like both Paul King and Simon Farnaby's stuff, but Chalamet is the biggest charisma vacuum since Shia Labeouf

Took my boys to see it couple of weeks ago. Lasted an hour and walked out. Thought it was shocking.
 
Watched Poor Things today. Seriously fudging weird film. Good performances and it’s striking to look at visually but I’m baffled by all the great reviews.

Caught that up cinema last night and also not quite sure about the hype, looked a bit like a Wes Anderson movie but didn’t really engross me like his films used to.

Good to see Statham do a short, fun action movie instead of tediously overlong Fast & Furious, Expendables or Meg franchise nonsense.

Speaking of which, I saw that Dogtooth is on ITVX Player and put it on, expecting some interesting but fun film. It was just horrible. And all in Greek. I confess I skipped parts, it was just horrible.

Is that the same director who made Poor Things? Also directed The Favourite, another terrible film.
