Saudi Sportswashing Machine

Got to feel for Saudi Sportswashing Machine here. The owners took a welcome stand against betting sponsorship and this guy comes in stinking of brick.

If you are wrong about some things it does not make you wrong about everything.

So we should feel sorry for them? Just because you do public executions, order the murder of journalists, hold the world to ransom with oil, treat women as second class citizens, kill homosexuals, fund terrorism etc... you had the moral high ground of not accepting sponsorship from a betting company.

Ok.

Been round in circles on this one on the board so not expecting any progress but I just can't understand the stupidity involved in this. It's my fault for being surprised at the idiocy of top level footballers I guess.

No sudden diagnosis of addiction for this one as of yet but no doubt Saudi Sportswashing Machine can pay a doctor to dot the i's and cross the t's to make more of a case for an appeal / reduction of the ban*

If you had that an insane amount of disposable income, a penchant for gambling but also the world at your feet in terms of a footballing career, just bet on other dumb brick like horseracing or literally any other sport / event that you are not professionally involved in.

I maybe come off as callous and if we had an instance of this with one of our players of course I'd want the club and fans to support that player but trying to frame it as anything other than the player letting the club down (and himself) seems a to be a completely forced and inaccurate angle.

In this situation will Saudi Sportswashing Machine be paying Tonali presumably huge wages just to train? In Saudi Sportswashing Machine's case I'm not so bothered as they have money to burn but for self sustaining clubs, that could ruin a season by having a star player out for a season and a half whilst their wages aren't even going towards helping the team in the pitch..

*I had a brief look on a Saudi Sportswashing Machine forum and that word was being thrown around so I might be mistaken and am also aware that addiction is a serious thing that can affect anyone in any walk of life

I have little sympathy for someone in his position, he is living the dream of millions and doesn't know or care how lucky he is. If he is addicted he has plenty of opportunity to get help as modern players have lots of people to wipe their arse for them and clubs will do anything to protect their asset. I would feel the same if he was one of our players I would even feel betrayed.

Question is. How do you become addicted if you aren't allowed to do it in the first place? There must have been a point when he wasn't addicted but gambled anyway. So the addiction argument is bs in the first place. He knew what he was doing.

Ok.

I said I do. I would sooner we had a different attitude to betting in this country.

That in no way means i would like to see the other things on your miserable list implemented here too.

If you support the betting companies fine. Just don’t criticise me for not doing so.

I don't support the betting companies. I think all advertisement for betting companies should be banned. I think loot boxes should be banned also. I just don't feel sorry for Saudi Sportswashing Machine.

Good. And I don’t support the Saudi government.

I understood the gambling addiction had been taken into account in determining the ban. Otherwise it could be 2-4 years.

While I don't underestimate the seriousness of a gambling addiction, you have to wonder about this case if he is, as reported, one of a largish group of players involved. Are they all addicts?

7% of all Serie A players are implicated. It something much more organised and criminal

Anyone in professional sport must know gambling on that sport is not allowed, they can bet on other events. This leaves them open to corruption like match or race fixing and a type of insider dealing. I dont know if these people are addicts but it seems to me they want to be seen as victims rather than dishonest.

As i said earlier. Gambling is banned. They're not allowed to do it. You are not born a gambling addict. At some point you would have to gamble first. Knowing it's against the rules. So you broke the rules not as a gambling addict. But for other reasons.

So if you have since become an addict. Because you kept on breaking the rules. Should be a totally seperate issue and have nothing to do with the punishment. Just to do with the rehabilitation.
