Redknapp

he should be given credit for finishing fourth, for crying out loud.. we should all feel disappointed in missing out on third and unluckily missing out on CL, but the very fact that he is receiving such a large amount of flak for a generally fantastic season really is beyond comprehension.

Yes undoubtedly, the season was successful - I was merely pointing out one specific point which has been part of this argument countless of times here - '3rd place'

It's funny how Arry should be given all the credit for making 3rd (he made sure in the press no one missed that) but exonerated of all responsibility for losing it instead blaming everything and everyone else but him. :|

That is one thing he is VERY good at.

The one thing nobody ever says about Levy is that actually, deep down, he can be too loyal and not ruthless enough. Take Martin Jol. Despite Martin having gone for two jobs behind Levy's back in the three years prior, when it came to the summer-before-the-sacking-season, the board wanted Jol to be sacked. Levy wanted to give him more time. Despite the board pressure, Levy decided not to sack him that summer, instead hoping he could make it happen. of course, that's a bit naive because once you've smelt a gas leak, chances are unless you turn the tap off the house will blow up. If Levy has had ANY weakness other than his occasional annoying brinksmanship in the market, it is this.

I'd agree with this, there were plenty of rumours at the time that Kemsley was pushing for Jol to be replaced by Redknapp. The rumours about Jol's future grew stronger after we were beaten by Sevilla in the UEFA Cup. The big mistake about the way Jol left the club was the timing and being caught out meeting with Ramos whilst Jol was manager.

if we're right be believe the received wisdom that Harry was irate at not being offered the job, would he really be so keen to take it after having been overlooked so publicly. and there's still the Brooking situation.

look at the flak Nice Guy Roy is already getting over his squad selection. he's one of the most respected names in football yet they're already gunning for him.

for all the notion that Harry has the press in his pocket, let's not be naive - there'll be plenty with an axe to grind should he get in and f*** up.

maybe i'm simple, but 4th-5th-4th is good enough for me. i also personally can't remember the time we had a manager going into his 4th (full) season, 5th season with us - and that, for me, does represent (more) stability.

good on the guy, i hope here's with us next season and beyond.

Why? What's the point in finishing without CL football, and once again below Arsenal!?

Do you not want us to play in the CL again or something? Or attract good players to the club and challenge for trophies? I want that...

If that is the goal then bold steps would have to be taken. Our rivals already have a cash advantage, if we concede the advantage of a better manager then we don't have much chance at all imo.

Mancini - 10 trophies as a player, 11 as a manager, including 2 in his first 2 seasons in England.
Ferguson - don't really need to point it out, but 12 PL's, 2 CL's, numerous other trophies.
Wenger - Has won 7 major trophies in England without even spending much money, and kept Arsenal in the CL throughout his whole time there.
Di Matteo - won the FA Cup and CL in half a season at Chelsea, more trophies than Redknapp has won in 30 years with a seemingly inferior team and squad than we have.

Plus they're all probably going to spend considerable money to consolidate their positions this summer. Money we can't match. I'm not saying Redknapp's a bad manager, far from it, but he's not good enough to displace one of these 4 imo, and if that isn't our aim then what's the point? I would bet my house though that if Redknapp stays with us all next season, we WON'T be playing in the CL 2013-14, and to me that is unacceptable. I just don't see how someone can look at the last few seasons and think that Redknapp can do it next season, I just don't understand it at all. Don't cite 2009-10, because Emirates Marketing Project weren't even close to what they are now and Mancini had only been there half a season. The past 2 seasons we have been relying on our rivals weakness rather than our strength, and look where that's got us. Sorry but they won't be so poor next season which means we have to step it up a level.

If Redknapp was given half the money Mancini has, we'd walk the title. Mancini's achievements at Inter were down to money and their two main rivals caught cheating. Even now, with more money than they can spend, City just barely finished top.

Di Matteo spent 3 months at Chelsea, in which time he had a poor league record and an amazing amount of luck in the cups.

We relied on Arsenal and Chelsea's fudge ups all season and it came back to bite because we couldn't do it on our own.

Fantastic season for me does not involve getting repeatedly thrashed by 3-5 goals by the top teams, and then finishing it completely empty-handed but maybe we have different ideas about what 'fantastic' means.

Complete fudging flimflam, I wish people would stop complaining about the money, there's nothing we can do about that and it's completely pointless to moan about that, but no if you think Redknapp could go toe to toe with Ferguson in a title race and play his mind games then you're out of your fudging mind, no matter how much money he spent he would bottle it, especially in the big title-deciding clashes, his team would lose because he doesn't give a brick about tactics, because he doesn't work on team shape, because he doesn't instruct them to practice set pieces. How did City win the title deciding game again? Oh yeah they scored on a corner, so if Redknapp was in charge they probably wouldn't have because they would have never practiced it.

I'm not complaining about the money, I'm saying Redknapp is a far better manager than Mancini.

If we're leaving money out of the argument I'm still not sure Redknapp is better than Mancini. People forget how difficult it is to come to a foreign league and win it, I mean let's put it this way if Redknapp was in charge of Inter I doubt they would have won the league.

Given the resources available at both Inter and City, I think Mancini is underachieving in both results and performances. He was sacked by Inter in the end for their consistent failures in the Champions League.

I think that it is true that with the resources at Mancini's disposal, Emirates Marketing Project should have absolutely walked the league last season.

Emirates Marketing Project did very well in the league - it is SAF who should receive praise for his results in keeping Utd in the fight till the final hour

For all of your attempted stabs at making your points in the past, by "using facts", your irrational and nonsensical bias and prejudices just crept out into the open. The first 3 words of that quote aren't a riposte - they are a heading for what followed.

I agree that Ferguson deserves credit for that and winning it the season before. Amazing performances with not particularly strong sides by his standards.

I do think that Emirates Marketing Project should have walked it though, the attacking options that they have are frightening, there is strength throughout the team but they failed to turn up to too many games.

of course i want that, it's just that i think we have to take steps to get there - we can't do it one leap. i think those steps include building on what we have developed over the last 3-4 years.

so you can't see how a manager that has got us CL football once (and would have been twice in three full seasons had it not been for a flukey chelsea win) can do it again? well, there's no debating with that kind of logic so i'll leave it there.
