Zeki Fryers

I was very saddened when we sent Rose on loan to Sunderland. I am a big fan of Rose and think he can be our left back for years to come. Which is why I don't understand this signing (unless he don't mind being understudy). He does add depth to centre half though as I believe he CAN play there? Has he played in U21 games there or at left back or anything?

Like I said, I think he trained with us in the summer, AVB will know exactly how good he is.

Naughton is better at right back, Vertonghen is better in the centre, Ekotto isn't the youngest anymore and Rose is still both relatively unproven and not yet good enough.

If Fryers is a good talent it's a good deal. It's not like we're panic buying some 30 year old Brazilian left back who was never good enough.

Understandable.

Naughton might be better at right back but he's adequate enough to play at left back, same with Verts and in the centre. Ekotto and Rose would be fine. If Ekotto is injured, we have Rose, if for some reason Ekotto AND Rose got injured, we could just have Naughton/Vert fill in there. I think Fryers should be loaned out to a Prem team next year (i dont believe he can be loaned out now he's signed for us), see what he's made of.

because of the fact we have BAE, Rose, Naughton, Vert all capable of playing there. That's four accomplished footballers who all have Premeir League experience as well as over 70 career games to there name. Unless of course Fryers is better than both Naughton and Rose at left back. He is only 20 of course, could have a very bright future ahead of him. Just hope that next year he could get a loan out to perhaps a Prem team like some of the above names have.

Naughton isn't the future at left back. He's done well over recent games but his lack of a decent left foot means that he's wholly unsuited for the role long term.

Playing Vertonghen at left back weakens us in central defence. Quite apart from the fact that he is on record as saying that he doesn't want to play at left back other than as emergency cover.

Fryers is just another option - one who, as you concede, could turn out to be better than the options we already have. In which case, it's a good signing - especially for the price.

I agree. It's worth noting that the mention on the official site said that he's joining our development squad. He's not being brought in to be an option or adequate cover this season i think, more one for the future who will hopefully be able to step it up. A loan if possible seems very likely at some point, seems to be the norm rather than the exception these days.

Once again. I never said he's the future at left back. Danny Rose is.

Naughton SHOULD be our right back, don't see how he hasn't had a run of games there, was brilliant at right back against Fulham, we kept a cleansheet too.

Considering he didn't sign a new contract with United because he heard they were thinking of loaning him and Fabio out this season, why would be happy going on loan next season?

because we'll have two players (hopefully) over him in his position. I don't see why any player would have a problem with going out on loan to get football. Caulker did it and he's better for it. Rose is doing it and he's better for it. Both have hopefully future at the club.

Yes. I would bet PSG if Cole goes to Madrid.

yep my thoughts exactly, get 10m from psg for ekotto have rose as first choice and fryers as back up and we will be just as strong as we are now, im not one of those that thinks ekotto is a GHod, good player same as rose.

Use the money elsewhere in the team, get rid of one of naughton or walker and then have smith as back up to the other, use that money to buy a world class striker job done.

Don't think jimmy was suggesting that you did, in the long-term we need 2 specialist left-backs. Although Benny is not old, in 5 years he will be and we will need to have another LB - Naughton is not appropriate even as a back-up, he should primarily be concerned with RB and only have to play LB in emergencies. In 5 years' time we will have also worked out who is good enough out of Rose and Fryers.

As you said, Fryers will hopefully be loaned out next season to a PL team if he is good enough. Not exactly a proven player though so such a move may be difficult for him.

Pay attention to the announcement that said Fryers will join the development squad
Same age as Luongo, Bostock, Lancaster etc. and will have to improve and perform to get any shot at first team football.
Reckon he'll play more for the U21s this season than the first team

I've rarely watched Rose this season, but I'm a bit wary of the praise he's getting at Sunderland. An attacking full back can be a real beacon of light in an otherwise dull, workmanlike Martin O'Neill side. Very easy for defensive deficiencies to be glossed over in exchange for attacking praise. Like I said I haven't seen much of him this season so he could be great defensively too, but these are the same fans that thought Alan Hutton was great when he was on loan to them.

As for Fryers, always glad to have a round-peg round-hole back-up for a position. We've a nice pool of six full backs now in BAE, Rose, Fryers, Walker, Naughton & Smith, all at varying stages of development but all looking promising.

No, but I want credit for speculating on it first ;)

To be fair you did stick with it throughout and I can't remember whether I said it to you or not but I was definitely in the "not going to happen" camp, especially in the January transfer window.

Now let's see if you're right with Moutinho!
