What's interesting about the attacking part of the team was that we started last season with the collective being our advantage. Then all of a sudden it wasn't because we lost Odobert and Richi whilst Ange was having his own issues with Werner, Then we lost Moore for a couple of months. It suddenly felt different.

I'm really hoping this current season we can change all of that. If we did have a senior core of Solanke, Son, Richi, Tel, Johnson, Kulu, Madds, Odobert and Kudus then I think we cope a lot better. That's not really mentioning what might happen with Solomon, Moore, Scarlett, Lanks etc.

It does feel like we're not going to get world superstars so we have to really get that collective working again. Keep them all fresh and use a meritocracy to get them all fighting for places. The subs bench options definitely look moire appealing.

I might be being overly optimistic but I think magic might happen under Frank with the attackers. He has a decent history of getting forward lines really singing.

Apperently we're about to sign 19 year old Kees Smit from AZ Alkmaar. I quite like him. Silky smooth touch and control. Plays with his head up. Mostly plays like a #10.

I have nothing against signing young players per se, I just wished we would focus on established players. Kees would probably take at least 6 months to get to grips with this league, and that is only if we are lucky. On the other hand Eze is proven and ready at this level.

It was going to have us competing in terms of being able to pay the fees. It wouldn't all of a sudden make every player want to join us.

I thought it was going to help us compete on wages which is critical. On average, the higher the wages a club pays the higher they are more likely to finish innthe lesgue.

Neither Robinho or Isak at the point of those respective transfers were made are the type of signing being discussed though are they? We're talking genuine established players who'd command top level wages rather than players at middling clubs and/or from middling leagues not yet proven at the highest levels. Even then you're talking about two of the wealthiest nation backed clubs making statement signings to signal their arrival.

Whether they were statement signings or not is irrelevant, it's to say that a club can sign pretty much any standard of player if and it's a big if they are willing to pay wages as those two were.

Again I'm not arguing we should do that but some people seem to think it's impossible when that's just not true.

I can't speak for anyone else but Isak is exactly the kind of player that I wish Spurs would sign but we never go for. Proven quality, established potential and ready for the next step, he's just a little bit too expensive for our blood.

Isak at 70mil/reportedly on 120k pw and coming from Sociadad, a non-CL Spanish club where he'd scored 30 league goals over 3 seasons is not the type of player we are talking about, at least not when you are dismissing Ndombele in earlier posts as being that type of signing, he came in on reportedly higher wages with a comparable transfer fee having played and established himself at a higher level (CL) - they fall within the same bracket of signing afaic and it's only after-timing that says otherwise - which highlights the hit & miss nature of football transfers.

Ange had immediately used the collective and attacking tactics to get the goals going in, even with conversion rates not where we wanted them. For the first time in a decade we started to see goals go in from many sources. That is what we lost last season for all of the discussed reasons.

What I'm saying is that we can get back to that this season if we've added Tel and Kudus and have them all fresh and fighting for a 1st team shirt. We shouldn't underestimate the power of that. I can easily imagine a game where Madds, Tel, Solanke and Kudus start whilst Kulu, Son/Odo, Richi and Johnson finish. Non stop fresh legs and attacking intensity for 95 mins. Next game in 3 or 4 days time with rotation. So on and so forth.

I think we would all perceive it differently.

My friend I watched La Liga. Isak was next up, it was really obvious. He had all the ability he just needed to develop a little bit more physicality.

Ndombele was a relative nobody who had masses of potential. They weren't in the same category of player. I watched a lot of Euro football at the time and Ndombele barely registered on my radar at the time. Now that's not to say he was a bad signing, I don't think he was at all. He's precisely the type we should go for. Some we will get wrong and some we will get right, but him at Isak weren't at the same table. The hype behind Isak was more akin to someone like Gyokeres or Sesko right now.

For me the goals numbers were good due to the system. It's something I'll always give Ange a lot of credit for with the obvious caveat of the inherent defensive problems said system incurred. I don't believe the goal numbers were related to the players individually and individually they were all quite meh going into 24/25. I was crying for improvements, we got Odobert who has potential but how high that falls was up for debate. The addition of Solanke was decent but he's just decent.

My analysis of the actual quality of the attack going into the season was that it was decidedly meh and I said so many times. I think I just have higher standards than you so I was not and I'm still just not particularly impressed. That's not to say that Frank can't get similar numbers out of them but with the same exact group of attackers I'd expect fewer goals due a more balanced approached.

It's a good conversation. It's not about my standards as clearly we'd all love the best at our club. It's more about what is realistic in the current marketplace and what improves the sum of the parts under a new manager.

Rasmus Hojlund was £72m with an initial payment of £60m. 95 appearances in all competitions and 26 goals. Alexander Isak, at the other end of the spectrum, is being touted at £150m.

Now every Spurs fan would get excited if we were linked with Isak but let's be honest, we're not going to be. We need to pick off our own versions of Isak or even Mane or Diaz like Pool did.

I think the question back to you is how do you manage your own expectations on this one? You surely know that the only way we buy an Isak is to go young and nurture. It's not buying the current real thing.

I actually think Spurs will get to an agreement with West Ham eventually. Kudus will be underwhelming in a few attributes but will bring an x-factor in others. We'll have to learn to live with that trade-off.

My expectations are completely different to my wants. I know we aren't signing an Isak from Saudi Sportswashing Machine or even Ramus from Atalanta for 72m (good thing). I've said loads of times I'm happy enough signing the young, the undervalued and the underappreciated players. You use that market wisely (as we have at times) and you can slowly build the quality of your team.

So I'm fine with all of that but that isn't going to blind me through realities of what we do have. The attack going into 24/25 was meh for me and it will be even more so this season if we don't add some quality to it because yes it is lacking quality by any standard.

I'd be equally happy spending 60m on Kudus as I would spending 30m-40m on Kubo or less on someone whom I don't even know. I'm all about attributes and not name recognition. You have the right qualities I don't care what league you came from or what team you played for.
