Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Manager in "Spurs could do with Luca Modric" shocker. I'm glad he mentions that not all midfielders need to be exactly the same as each other - if I ever play FM again I'll be sure to stick by such sage advice.

I'm looking forward to the next instalment where we learn "You've got to stick the ball in the net to score" and "Spurs could do with Gareth Bale".

Lol always look forward to your responses to anything Tim says

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Just dont think he's a good people person. Before anyone defends him against that claim, ask yourself why the majority of fans want him gone.

Also the kinda subs he made v Stoke was somewhat bemusing to me

I think the main reasons the fans want him gone is because none of us liked him as a player, he spouts ******** when a microphone is put in front of him, the team has lacked a definable shape under him and there are the constant (if unproven) rumours of treachery.

I think he has expressed it better than he did in his much misquoted "much of a muchness" statement, though; don't you?

I'm just popping down to the shops to drop off a parcel to a High Street newsagent (shall I take the Ferrari or Lamborghini? They are both much of a muchness - i.e. both terrible*) so haven't got time for a long post, but this clip from the Grauniad interested me.

Saudi Sportswashing Machine allow their French contingent to visit assorted orthopaedic specialists in Paris while also receiving treatment for certain injuries at Clairefontaine. Just lately Pardew has struggled to contain his frustration when Rémy, Mathieu Debuchy and Moussa Sissoko proved in no rush to return to action on Tyneside following treatment for fairly routine complaints. Saudi Sportswashing Machine's manager suspects staying fit for the World Cup rather than helping their club may be at the forefront of their minds.

Seems like there is a lot of this going on.

* Only from a parking point of view, obviously.

Absolutely, although it's clear to all of us that's what he meant I doubt it was clear to the team at the time and that impression will likely be set in their minds.

Agreed.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

We have some very good midfielders, but are they varied enough? As Sherwood said they are kinda samey. But you can see logic in why they were bought. The way AVB set up. We massively missed Sandro in the Dembro axis which served us so well. Shipping out Parker meant Capoue was a good backup should Sandro get injured.

We got rid of huddlestone. Got in Paulinho. Not a like for like but in keeping with the style AVB likes to employ.

But absolutely, we miss that passer in midfield.

What's the perfect blend though?

How many do we need?

Sandro - destroyer
Capoue - destroyer
Dembele - dribbler
Paulinho - breaks into box well
Bentaleb - Passer (short)
Carroll - Passer (short)
Livermore - destroyer

Lot of options there. Certainly need to move some on

What's the right blend? Depends on our chosen style I would imagine

Livermore's not a destroyer, if anything he's like Paulinho, he's a box-to-box player for me.

I agree.

I also think Benteleb is exactly what Tim said...a bit of everything. His positional sense is awful but he can do a bit of everything.

For me a top team should never have to depend on a lot of individual players to be available at the same time, there has to be some backup. This is also true for the creative force central/deep in midfield.

Perhaps Bentaleb or Carroll could be good enough to be that backup option next season? Personally I would be rather skeptical of the pair of them as our two options for that role next season as I'm not convinced either is ready for that responsibility (although I would probably applaud any manager that made that decision). I think we have to get one playmaker type in for the summer, someone ready to do a job straight away. But one could be enough.

That would mean someone else leaving. Livermore, one of Carroll or Bentaleb on loan perhaps and one of the big 4 that isn't Sandro.

Manager in "Spurs could do with Luca Modric" shocker. I'm glad he mentions that not all midfielders need to be exactly the same as each other - if I ever play FM again I'll be sure to stick by such sage advice.

I think that's very harsh scara.

He's not saying we could do with a Luka Modric, he's saying we need that type of player. Did our transfer committee last summer agree with that? It seems not. Did it agree with that when we replaced Modric with Dembele? Or when Huddlestone was sold without any similar replacement being brought in? Seemingly not.

Now, perhaps Sherwood deserves part of the criticism for this, after all he's been a part of that transfer committee by the reports (at least at times). Perhaps he doesn't, perhaps he argued that we should have signed someone else, or used Bentaleb or Carroll? We cannot know, but right now he's saying the right things. And although it's not exactly rocket science, much like when Redknapp immediately realized that we needed a Palacios, it's correct and seemingly not as obvious to everyone in charge of such things for our club over the last couple of seasons.

Edit: If I have my negative hat on Sherwood might also deserve some criticism for not doing anything about this in January. He says he wanted Tom Carroll back, but that couldn't be done. Were there really no viable targets in the transfer market that could have done a job? No one as good as Tom Carroll? If so I'm looking forward to seeing little Tom for us next season that's for sure...

Even as a TS hater i must admit that interview made a lot of sense

I wouldn't classify myself as a hater, but certainly agreeing with him is a little bit like agreeing with Cartman in South Park, makes me reconsider if my opinion is actually correct ;)

Sounds a little bit like the description of a young Michael Carrick, or perhaps even a young Luka Modric?

My understanding is that he played further forward for the Development Squad.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Bentaleb's best performance so far IMO was away to Saudi Sportswashing Machine, where he was given a freer role in more forward positions. I think Capoue was played in that game as a holding player and it freed up both Bentaleb and Dembele to get forward and we absolutely rinsed them as a result.

Maybe not a destroyer, but certainly a hustler.

(Full disclosure: Always had a soft spot for Jake as he was in the same class as my eldest at Enfield Grammar.)

Sherwood: Spurs miss Modric’s qualities, but Carroll could be the answer

Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood

Tim Sherwood believes Tottenham have failed to replace Luka Modric, the pass master who “assists the assister”, but he feels Tom Carroll could be the solution.

Tom Carroll
Spurs’ best side in recent memory featured Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart, who all played their parts as Harry Redknapp’s side reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2011.

And, while much has been made of Bale’s absence this season, Sherwood thinks that Modric’s talents were similarly vital.

As a disappointing season comes to an end, Spurs’ head coach feels the Croatian’s creative qualities are missing from the midfield.

However, he believes that 21-year-old Carroll, who is nearing the end of his season-long loan with QPR, could fill that void at White Hart Lane – and he admits he tried to recall the England Under-21 international in the January transfer window.

Nabil Bentaleb has been an unused substitute in the last four games
“I could go on for ever about this, it’s just about having a blend in different areas of the field and different types of players in different areas of the field, and I just think the squad misses that a little bit,” said Sherwood.

“Sometimes you can turn around and look to make a change, and it’s not always a like-for-like change that you want to make.

“Sometimes you want to bring someone on to make a difference, a different type, and I just think the blend’s not fantastic. But that takes time to work with and it’s also in the recruitment process of the club.

“Sandro and [Etienne] Capoue are similar, in statue and in the way they break up the game. I think Paulinho’s a little bit different, he likes to break forward into the box.

“But we miss that player - I’m not saying [Mousa] Dembele can’t do it because he can pick it up and he can dribble – but we miss someone who moves that ball and passes it between the lines very quickly, and he assists the assister.

“Gareth Bale needed that ball very quickly and I think Luka Modric got it to him very quickly. I think Tom Carroll was that player - he can do that, absolutely. I tried to bring Tom back [in January], it just wasn’t possible.”

So was that the reason for Nabil Bentaleb’s rapid promotion at Spurs? Was Sherwood hoping that he could provide the necessary verve and incision in the midfield?

“No, he’s a different type of player,” said the head coach. “I think he’s got a bit of everything, Nabil. I think he can get up and back, and he can also score.

“We haven’t seen that because he’s not had that freedom to get forward in the games he’s played.”

Bentaleb featured in 19 of Sherwood’s first 22 games in charge at Tottenham, including nine successive starts.

However, the 19-year-old has not appeared since the 4-0 defeat at Liverpool on March 30 and has been an unused substitute for the last four games.

“Really I’ve protected him by taking him out of the spotlight,” said Sherwood. “We’ve been talking about our homegrown players, and I took him out of it.

“He’s been unlucky not to be playing, but I’m trying to protect him – and I think Manchester United did the same with [Adnan] Januzaj. He’s not featured in the last month or so.

“Sometimes a young boy can’t go in and stay in forever. It’s an art of when to put them in and when to bring them back, but he [Bentaleb] isn’t shying away, and he wants to play more than anyone.

“He has his head in his hands when I name the team and he isn’t in it, but unfortunately I’m doing it for his own benefit. You’ve got to be cruel to be kind in the long run.”

Asked if he feels the Spurs fans weren’t appreciating Bentaleb, Sherwood replied: “It’s a bit of that, and a bit of the fact that I think he needs a rest and someone else needed to come in there and do the job.”

Actually talks a lot of sense here
could the real TS please stand up............. agree, thats a good interview

Decent but his tactics don't follow. To me, having Paulinho, Dembele, Siggy (or any two of the three) in the same side doesn't make sense

Eriksen has to play (he is simply our best midfielder), also only creative midfielder other than Carroll
If you play a DM = Sandro or Capoue
If you don't play a DM, you need someone who while not necessarily a do everything person, needs to be comfortable holding on to the ball, retaining possession, cycling the ball (to me Bentaleb is one of the few players we have that can do that)
Wide players = we really only have Lennon/Townsend, Lamela when fit
Box to box, goal threat options = Paulinho, Siggy, Dembele, Livermore, Holtby (this is where we have too much of the same)

The view for me is, bring Carroll back or buy a Creative midfielder
Get rid of 2 or 3 of our box to box midfielders
Look for another wide option (specifically on left)
Figure out a balance that works (or two, one more defensive, one more attacking)

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Poch could take 6 months to learn what Sherwood shows he knows about our set-up in this interview, simply by virtue of being here already. Which makes the panic to get one out and the other in seem less sensible by the day.

If Sherwood bombs, we could have him out the door and Poch in at Christmas. Since that would have been Poch's learning/acclimatisation period anyway, and since his arrival at Christmas could be a boost to the players if we're struggling, it really is becoming increasingly difficult to see the compelling need for Poch to come in this summer.

And is some other club going to poach Poch this summer? Not in England unless it's Saudi Sportswashing Machine, and I doubt he'd bother going to that madhouse. Who in Spain would he be tempted by, knowing his reputation is growing in England? Italy or Germany? Maybe, but I strongly suspect he'll still be at Southampton if we don't take him, biding his time for Spurs to come back, Arsenal to open up, Pellegrini getting the chop, or a really big job back home to come along.

Sherwood's interview - rookie gaffs absent, correct analysis of our players, repeated praise of attacking football - really shows what he could be when he settles down, stops making silly mistakes and stops losing his temper. His learning curve even in the last few weeks has been rapid.

I like you mate, but the last thing the club needs is another mid season manager transition.

The equation is simple
- Either the club hierarchy believes in TS and will back him all of the next season, including purchases in summer
- Or if they doubt, and will not back him in summer, then he has to go now, get new guy in, get his buys, his preseason.

The chances are they do not but I hope to GHod they show more sense than half the guys on here who want anyone but Tim. Im sure the Board are more sensible and think otherwise i.e. if there isnt a great candidate at the present moment and one they truly see as a long term solution 100% convinced - then dont bother. There is absolutely no point in bringing in someone who the Board dont fancy 100% or would be a short term solution.
