I am a bit reluctant to criticise Ugo because I havent really sat down to watch the team play full matches.

However I have been following the scores and team lists. Is there a concern in the club that we are playing people out of position and not giving them a fair opportunity to display their skills and ability especially when we are looking towards them as our future talent funnel?

im not sure results have too much bearing at that level - if playing players out of their comfort zone helps develop their game then that would be of bigger benefit to us than having an u21 team winning every game, id have thought anyway.

though i don't follow the youth side of things at all so it could just be a case of him not really knowing what he is doing , or maybe even a bit of both

Without a doubt, a lot of the clubs are now concentrating on producing better all round players and seeing how they adapt to different situations. Ajax ( and other foreign clubs) have been doing it for years and is probably why those players are better technically then home grown ones.

The way the modern game is going there will be fewer specialist positions and players will be selected based on their mental attitude rather than skill for the roles they play, apart from Wimmer most of our 1st team players can play in several positions. Getting young players to play "out of position" can help them understand what their team mates want and expect in certain areas.

Watching game on SpursTV, not very impressed with the team play, or lack of it. Apart from the leftback we don't have any natural defenders and our midfield look very lightweight, Winks is particularly dissappointing.

Not easy for them, the Sunderland players are all a lot bigger

We played some good stuff in the first half an hour, Sunderland have made it difficult for us since though and as @milo says they have an obvious physical advantage.

That's good, players have to perform in challenging situations. I don't think the U21 system helps players to get in the 1st team, that's why they need to go on loans to play against experienced players.

Funny you should say this as recently I was told that Poch blocked loan moves for at least three of our u21s in January, I've heard from a few now that he is very insistent that he doesn't want anyone else interfering with their development. In fact, those who aren't as highly rated are more likely to go out on loan than those who are.

That's possibly because there aren't many teams that would help develop our current crop, Pritchards loan has been a complete waste of time and managers are so afraid of the sack they don't want to gamble on youth. Some players will get more benefit training with the 1st team squad, but playing regularly against players of similar experience and physic doesn't stretch the players enough. Kane, Walker and Rose all gained valuable experience and Erikson, Alli and Dier all played against experienced players from an early age.

I don't think that it is as simple as one size fits all, different players will benefit from different approaches but thankfully, we do not have a manager who is scared of giving youth team players a chance.
