The mighty Tottenham Hotspur vs Benfica OMT

On the whole I agree that a pure ballwinner who does that and nothing more is outdated. But Sandro is more than just that; he has been first choice many times for Brazil...

He has just played like an oaf under TS who instead of trying to forge a cohesive general strategy for the team has swung from 'we don't need defensive midfielders' to 'firkin show some passion' and now Sandro does nothing more than 'run about a bit' and concede silly fouls after not being positionally disciplined.

Once we get a more experienced manager who has a plan and strategy then you'll probably see Sandro get back to his best.

Good point about Sherwood. Shows how reactive he's been. Came in after AVB reacted to his negative football by attempting to play passers in midfield. He abandoned that after a few bad game.
And when the players heads dropped everything was made about working hard.

Its a guy saying and doing whatever he thinks will keep him in the job for another few months with no long term goal for style of play.

Second.

For the first time this season I was actually proud of the team tonight.

Don't get me wrong, I know we were up against a side in cruise mode that thought they had the tie won but purely from a Spurs perspective it was nice to see all eleven players at once trying hard, even if little came off. Effort has been lacking in most of our games but today it was there in abundance.

It was by far Chadli's best performance in a Spurs shirt, hopefully he keeps it up cos he's been poor up til now. Fryers also impressed me tonight in an unfamiliar role. Sandro did okay til his stupid tackle at the end and Bentaleb was alright although wasteful in possession at times. Only bad players on the night were Soldado, Sigurdsson and Townsend, but all three at least put some effort in to their running for once.

Thought we would get humiliated so it could have been worse, and just for a minute the boys had me believing.

Sherwood thought we'd be humiliated too. That's why he put out the side he did with a readymade excuse for the press when we lost. He's well into his future managerial career damage limitation mode.

Typical Spurs, always start poorly in the knockout stages and only try hard when the time has run out. Why didn't we play like this from the start of both the legs ? We have got this bad habit in Europe in recent years. Not sure we would ever overcome that. Ofcourse, it helps when the manager is more ambitious to win a trophy unlike Sherwood.

Looking at the team lineup, it was clear Sherwood didn't take this match seriously. Since we needed to score 3 goals, we should have started with Soldado and Kane in attack. We also should have started our most creative player Eriksen in midfield as well. Afterall, Eriksen had scored in the last 2 matches in Europe. The ineffective Townsend and out-of-form Sigurdsson should not have started. Not surprisingly, the team got lifted when Eriksen came on and we started to play well. But it was too late by then.

Chadli did well to score the 2 goals to give us some hope. But he should have done better with a few other chances especially the free header in the first half. It was disappointing to see Soldado looking out-of-sorts again. He should have scored from his 2 chances in the first half. Wish we still have the "Cup specialist" Defoe who could have scored the much-needed goals.

I think out midfield would have done much better if Eriksen had started. Sigurdsson was again struggling and he wasted a good freekick which Eriksen could have scored from. Disappointing to see us conceding yet another soft goal. But since we were playing a make-shift defence, it was understandable. Too bad Sandro spoiled his good work by giving away that needless penalty in the injury time.

Well, was feeling very confident we would win the EL when AVB was in charge. But Sherwood has wasted all that. Now, we have only pride to play for in the remaining matches this season.

Na home leg was poor. They gave us the ball and we lacked confidence.
Chadli's goal seemed to unlock Spurs for the first time in the tie and Benfica sh*t themselves. It's a shame we didn't have our full squad for these games. I think we should have done some damage

You say full squad but to be honest I think the reason we were good yesterday was because we didnt have any of that prima donna ****e - like Verts. All those out there last night, what they lacked in technical ability made up for it with attitude and endeavour. WHilst that is not enough id have that over players not caring any ****in day.

missed most of it last night, watched a few bits this morning, shame we didn't get at them more as their keeper is ****

(fully expecting to get told about 3/4 amazing saves he made last night that I haven't seen now)

All top teams now have everyone pressing up the pitch in an attempt to win the ball back rather than one ball winner in midfield.
What good is single ball winner when the opposition has creative players all over the pitch.
Out and out ballwinners belong in the dark ages when opposition teams had maybe one creative threat.

We can still play a pressing game with a ball winner in CM, but my main point being, I think you are doing Sandro a dis-service by saying he is 'just a ball winner'. Number one, he's a fantastic ball winner, number 2, he's strong with the ball at his feet and although his range of passing is nothing special he looks to pass forward at most opportunities. He's was a fairly well established Brazilian international before his injury.

I'm genuinely surprised that people are considering he's surplus to requirements on here, for me he's one of the few players we have at the moment that we should be looking to build the team round.

AZ away for Benfica........funny the teams left in the last eight looks easier than the sides left in the last 16,don't understand how we ended up with benfica,we win the group, and end up playing a champs league reject, who lost out with a record number of points, very unlucky draw....if we got through ,we could have done something.....

We played Dnipro first. There were no seeds in this round.

He's trying to prove a point.

Amusingly he has little to gain, as we drew his match, and the continuation of his thread would bring him back into the sights of th OMT gods..

Nope - l'm referring to the OFFICIAL Limersol thread that I set up and has now been DUPLICATED.

Milo says we have always had two threads one for each leg well I say NO here is PROOF Milo old bean

Some of you think this is a joke but I take the UEFA Cup seriously

(Back home safe from Scotland thanks)

Check out the Europa play off from last season then. Two OMTs and we went through, Benfica was a disaster and you want us to try that again ](*,)
