The final straw?

I think people who boo this team are pathetic. Post-Champions League fans the majority of them. We were utter pony over in Slovenia, but (bar the 50-60 people who left at HT to get back on the Lasko's at 2 euros a go) everyone still clapped the team off. I personally think people who boo the team off at HT should have either/or been shot at birth, or supported Arsenal.

May '98 - Wimbledon away, needed to get something to go into last day of season with a chance of staying up. We win 6-2. That wasn't even 15 years ago. 50 year olds who boo, should either have knocked it on the head - or stayed in the pub and watched it on a jekyll Arabic channel.

Agreed.

Me and a mate I go with who are both in our 50s and have NEVER booed. It is just counter productive and makes us look ridiculous.

In general, the atmosphere at football grounds is poor all over the country. Its a shame we cant replicate atmospheres at Bundesliga grounds :(

I'm sure that the atmosphere in WHL would improve massively if we had safe standing sections and tickets for them were a third to half of the current cheapest ticket.

The atmosphere would improve somewhat if we sorted out teams like Wigan, Norwich and WBA at the Lane. Not going to happen with the likes of Sigurdsson, Dempsey and Livermore.

Have to agree with the OP, i have been going since the early 60's and been a ST for many years. There are so many macarons at the games nowadays who do nothing but moan and bitch at every misplaced pass. These macarons who boo are not helping the team or the players to perform any better infact its just the opposite, and they do not have the brains to see that its counter productive.

At least the 50 year olds amongst you saw some good Spurs teams, I started going in 1996 and have seen utter tosh season upon season. :-k

aye - the Germans don't seem to have this attitude of trying to price out the working class that we do in England

Did anyone else notice that Wigan won the toss at the start and asked to swap ends, thereby giving us kick off?

I think it unsettled us. Normally we come flying out the blocks at the start or at least we did under Harry.

Worrying that if Martinez figured out that this rattles our build up to the game, other teams will try it too.

For the record, I can't remember as poor a performance at home from both the crowd and the team.

Ive been going to the Lane for over 20 years and sit (stand in the park lane end) where most of singing starts and it's definitely been flatter than years past.

i've only really heard booing at the final whistle up til now but not really at half time, and it's happened at least 4 times this season.. Would be interesting to find out which sections of the crowd are doing it and replace those people with those who never get the chance to go!

I think the atmosphere has changed down at the Lane in the last few years due to a number of factors..

1. Early kick offs. Nobody has much chance to get merry not that you need alcohol to go and support your team but I find the boozed up ones get the singing going in the Park Lane end
2. I hate sunday games, I find people around me would much happier playing on a saturday and so atmosphere seems flat particualrly this season as we've played some teams down the bottom.
3. Me and friends around me get the feeling that the fans are a bit anxious as many still aren't sure about the new manager and sacking of 'arry who did so well for us and this maybe translates to the players
4. Also some small groups have booed the team off on 2 or 3 occasions this season at WHL and I get the feeling that all fans aren't united
5. We're limited in getting new fans into our ground and the same peeps pretty much go every week so it feels a bit stale sometimes. Club need to push cheaper seats for kids for the UEFA games when the ground isnt full

Also the points about being entertained aswell ring true For me certainly last year was the best football I'd seen at WHL in 20 years of being a fan and I go to Spurs now expecting to win so you possibly lose a bit of that singing as you start to expect wins every week

My two pence worth..

I don't think it's a coincidence that we've struggled at home in recent years in certain games as the atmosphere has got worse. West Ham are also known for being very harsh at times on their team, especially at home, they even gave Nigel "mediocre" Reo coker his nickname! Our players maybe feel more comfortable playing away from home.

Had this conversation about atmosphere's with a West Ham friend of mine and he says the same that the atmosphere isnt great at all down there either, i'd be interested to see where we sit in the loudest ground stats as i know Sky often do a poll. I saw an article recently on German football and they still have terracing in some of their grounds and they seem to have some of the best atmospheres in the world.

some great points there. I think that moving games to suit TV and games being on a Sunday because of the Europa League are definitely factors. I hate Sunday games too.

I started following around 1990 myself, but I find it strange how anyone can complain about what we're seeing now if they were around in the 90s. We have been getting a lot more things right than wrong during Levy's reign, but there are 19 other clubs doing all they can as well. Sometimes even the very best can only get you so far.

I think some of it is down to the internet and forums, where people work themselves up throughout the week and end up with almost impossibly high expectations. Go on a forum for any random club and you'll find they're always thinking they will get something from the next game, even if they're in the relegation zone and playing a top 4 team. No matter how brick the team is doing they always think that the next game will be completely different. This ultimately leads to a lot of disappointment, which is intensified by a good kneejerking session online.

Southampton fans want to get rid of a manager that have got them two promotions because they believe their squad is good enough for midtable, when it clearly isn't. Liverpool fans that insist that, man for man, their squad is the best in the league. West Ham think they should be above us in the table simply because they're West Ham and we're Tottenham.

I think the cultural norms about not wanting to look ridiculous have changed over the years. I'll give you reality TV as exhibit A.

We are living in the age of attention seeking and any attention will do. So many are just desperate to be noticed and have absolutely no shame. There's also lot more impatience than before, we want it all and we want it now. It's all about quick fixes and instant gratification, which long term gets you nowhere.

I can see levy and the board dismissing safe standing even before any one comes to them with the idea ,in regards to the new staduim, you can see levy sitting in his ivory tower giving us plebs the julius ceaser with the thumbs down,........'standing, the plebs will want cheaper admission prices then, not on yer life'.

Over the years he's chipped away with his policys at the club,he didn't want harry in the first place so the first golden chance of getting rid he couldn't be quick enough to do so and whats so fecking annoying is when business is mixed into football and words are used like, strategy, new direction and ideas like director of football, where the two most succesful managers in the division don't employ one.

It always been the case with us as keith burkinshaw once said there used to be a football club over there.

I don't see any club lowering their prices for standing compared to seating, at least not to any substantial degree, why should they? The main point of safe standing is that you're actually allowed to stand during a game if that's what you want to do.

If Levy was that desperate he would have canned Harry last summer, but given his success he was given more time. IMO the decision had more to do with the working climate off the pitch. The fact that Harry was unable to come up with a real target for striker is one example. As for Wenger and Ferguson, they are the de facto DoF for their respective clubs, they make all the big decisions regarding youth setup and scouting.

This makes zero sense. If you have standing you would be able to sell more tickets so you could make more money with cheaper prices anyway. That's the kind of thing Levy would like.

I think there would also be an argument that people might challenge the pricing, if standing accommodation cost the same as seating, and it would be difficult for the club to argue it was reasonable to charge the same amount. I think they would drop the prices; it would be a question of by how much, and the answer would probably be "by as little as they think they can get away with."
