Squad

There is also a lot to be said about having experience in the squad, while they may not play or have limited playing time they both have massive experience and while we are dropping the age of the squad that could be essential to the likes of Sarr, Phillips etc..

I believe the opposite is important too. Don’t have a senior player stinking out the squad with their unhappiness.

Agree. But these are backup players, let’s not forget. Backups who’ve played and won world cups. They can play at a level if we need them to. No one played particularly well last season. Unfair to judge them solely on last year. I have confidence that both could step up should we need them. Dier is actually better than Sanchez all told. Hugo is actually a better keeper than Forster.
Hugo last season was inferior to Forster
That’s an actual fact
His errors lead to gaols and key goals. Even if you carve it up over games played.. Hugo cost us a lot of points
I see no reason to think that will have improved when he would be asked to have even more of the ball. In fact, that’s bloody scary
He was a World Cup winner… he isn’t anymore
Our current manager doesn’t agree with your opinion on players
It’s why he is in charge and you are a fan like me and everyone else. Doesn’t mean we can’t have opinions of course ;)

Haha. I posted weeks ago that Dier and Hugo would make the squad. You’re saying Ange didn’t approve that?

We’re discussing backups. I’m not sure there is much in it. Hugo last season wasn’t great, but over his career he’s a proven shot stopper at least. Sanchez his whole time here wasn’t great. Dier at least has spells of playing well. But hopefully these lads don’t get games because our first choice stay fit. I feel we can trust Dier and Hugo however if called upon.

I always feel players miss penalties rather than keepers save them
Keepers should never have the chance to save a penalty… but in reality that’s not normal

Hugo is better IMO at saving or penalties than Forster

but Hugo can’t kick, last season couldn’t catch, and gives his defence no confidence

he also doesn’t want to play for us anymore

it’s a no brainer adding him to the squad because we have space, same with Dier

but neither will be in the squads unless we have some HUGE issues

Both will be gone by the end of January to new clubs

I’m saying he has stuck them in because he can
Who is the third choice keeper? The guy who was us injured
We have just sold out third choice centre back so Dier now goes from 6th choice to 5th
They won’t play
That’s fine
Neither is a bad guy. Both have IMO served the club commendably
Hugo has been bloody outstanding
But… their time is done
It’s just that no one else wants them

You said our current manager doesn’t agree with my opinions yet he’s included them in the squad - which was my opinion. Anyways…we all agree these are yesterdays players. But not bad squad resources and backup. Fans have turned against them but they can perform under Postecoglou if called upon.

I’d argue very very strongly that the fact they have had NO minutes in any game including pub friendless shows that ange doesn’t agree with you
But unlike clame he isn’t going to cut off his nose and not put a player in that he may… may have to use

How is he ‘disagreeing with me’ when my point was, they’d be included in the squad? He has included them in the squad. It’s black and white.

He has also included some kids
Your combining two things in one argument and separating them in another

Yes they are in the squad
That’s factually correct
But neither players has been used to date by ange when he has had ample opportunity
He even said he wasn’t going give Hugo a squad place but that may have predicated with an assumption that he would leave
Dier is now in the squad as 5th choice CB
He is in the squad but your talk about these players being used
They won’t unless the squad is decimated through some plague
I don’t think ange trusts them one bit or they may… may have made the bench vs Fulham
Neither did

They're unlikely to start many games. I see no problem having them as backup. Yes it would have been preferable tosell them. But it's not as if they wouldn't probably sign extensions if offered.

Exactly, who have they stopped being in the Squad? Do we have a 23 year old centreback fuming at being left out or any other over 21 who would be selected? Let's see what happens in January

I *think* Beford is/was saying that Postecoglou doesn't really have those players in his plans. The fact that neither Lloris or Dier have yet made a matchday squad of 20 players probably evidences Bedford's points.

Did either play pre-season?
I think Dier played vs Barca IIRC

I just wanna add, for what it’s worth
Both Dier and Hugo for me are in my favourite player brackets
Borderline club legends for me (just me I know)
Hugo is the best keeper I’ve seen my lifetime and I’ve been going since 81 (although I’m 47)
And Dier played a big role in the best team I’ve seen for us. Hell, I’ve even invested in his company Spotlas… check it out
But we are moving on, at pace and they need to too

Completely agree. I’m a user of spotlas, quite like it.

Actually quite surprised at Hugo’s numbers there, in no way did I think he was a specialist or anything, but I thought he’d saved his fair share. Maybe it’s just that he’d saved some high profile ones, like v Aguero in Champions League for example, so they stick in the mind?

Also Gazzaniga was actually in goal for several of our shoot-outs during that period (MK Dons etc.), as they tended to be earlier round domestic cups, and he was pretty good at them.

I don’t actually recall when we last had an issue with a player on contract who suddenly passed through the autumn of their career whilst still on contract. He has given us everything.

Nor do I mind him in and around the team this season. He wil still provide decent opposition for shooting practice and so on. Maybe he does some coaching of the other guys too.

We should be happy he is being treated honourably as a veteran of many long campaigns in our shirt. He’s our war dog.

There's no arguement chaps. You're trying to suggest I think Postecoglou likes and wants these players. I don't think he does either. That is obvious, isn't it? We've known that for some time. The point was simple: we weren't going to ditch them and not include them in the squad. That has been borne out.

There are question marks on Sarr, if he could be classed as home grown or not.
Not looked into it, but always thought he wouldn't qualify as we loaned he back when we signed him.
