Set-Piece - Shooting Specialist

The only one I've seen on of his on target ironically was against us for Portsmouth - although that got a deflection and Gomes pulled off a worldie.

Ah, was that the one where he managed to get an arm up towards the bar when he was full stretch to his right, that was incredible. Poor old Gomes, wish he had the constitution for Prem football.

One solution to our problem: Buy Falcao. The guy is a fudging beast in the air!

There's no club that isn't backed by an oil baron that could afford him right now. They spent Ôé¼40m on him last summer and he's been brick hot for them.

Depends how badly we want him. Sell Modric, then we'll have enough money to make a 50 million quid bid for him, which would at the very least tempt Atletico (after all, it is 17 million quid more than they paid for him). Don't think he's good enough to sell Modric over, though.

The vital ingredient in all those goals (other than the terrific finishes) was the quality of the set pieces that lead to them.

No good to us then :x

Bale was a genius when it came to free-kicks. VdV likewise. Modric was the chief set-piece expert for Dinamo, back in the day. We buy some really good dead-ball specialists. But they turn to brick within weeks of them arriving at the club. Probably lack of training, or focus on set-pieces. I mean, look at United's first goal; you had players running diagonally to draw defenders away, players running parallel to confuse the covering players near the spot, and a player blocking friedel to ensure his non-interference. Therefore, it's no great surprise that huge hole opened up in the center of defence for Rooney to nod it in without even having to jump. We do NONE of those things, because we never practise them in training. Whose fault is that?

110% agree DS. The coaches have a lot to answer for.

Next up is us actually scoring directly from a free kick. What was the last league goal we got from one?

I can barely remember any over the years - Bale V Arsenal, Jenas at OT, Jenas at Middlesborough, Barbatov V West Ham - what others?

Shocking return from the amount of free kicks we've had around the box. Pavs in the Europa was nice but in the league I can't remember, BAE?

Our main goal in the next transfer window should be to:

1. Buy a top class striker
2. Buy a set piece specialist

Arsenal looked threatening with nearly every set piece today, and this was against a team who are one of the best in the league at set pieces at both ends.

The United and Stoke home games showed how vital they are, United were poor in the first half, they get a corner right on half time, they score from it. Stoke only needed one set piece to punish us.

I agree with the first one; Llorente, Soldado, Remy, Huntelaar, Lewandowski, Lavezzi, Rossi....those are, I think, near the upper limit of what we can get. Cavani, Gomez, Dzeko et al are out of our reach. If we are going for strikers, I'd also like us to have a look at Goran Pandev, Abel Hernandez and Seydou Doumbia- very good players and eminently acquirable.

The second one, not so sure about. We already have several 'set-piece specialists' at the club. Rafa, Modric, Bale, Kranjcar...the problem with our (generally) tinkle-poor set pieces is lack of practice, not lack of skill. Train our players up a bit more and we should see our set-plays improve rapidly. Indeed, we already are seeing that happening after just a few days of practice.

Edit; I'd also be happy with a permanent deal for Ade; better the devil you know, after all....

I also agree with the first point. That needs to be right up at the top of our list (after sorting out the manager situation of course).

Second one I agree with you up to a point. We have two good set piece takers regularly in the starting lineup, VdV and Bale. Bit of practice and they should both be close to as good as most players we can sign. We don't have a single good right footed set piece taker regularly in our starting eleven. I do rate Modric highly, but his set pieces have never been good. He just doesn't strike the ball well enough. I've seen people write that he was a set piece expert back in the Croatian league, but I can only think that this says more about the Croatian league than Modric if this is true.

Huddlestone should have the talent to become a good set piece taker if he practices. Can't see why he shouldn't be able to. But other than him it's slim pickings. As long as Kranjcar is on the bench he doesn't do our set pieces any more good than Clive Allen's poaching abilities does us. A right footed set piece expert wouldn't go amiss, but obviously only if he's also good enough at everything else.

At half time in the Germany v Spain WC group game, Poch was waxing lyrical about how important a set piece coach is and how the small details can make all the difference! Shame he didn't listen to himself!!

Maybe the lemons had something to do with it !!!!!

Pochs biggest success here was uniting everyone (players, board and fans)
His biggest failure…. Not changing his coaching staff for the fresh voice the players needed IMO
