Politics, politics, politics

@scaramanga

Also, I don't believe "integration" is a one way thing, it's not about moving somewhere and behaving like the existing population, the area should change to include the positive characteristics of both (all) groups

again, something I believe multiple generations of Brits have a mental block on

integration, not assimilation

I agree with that fully. I'm trying to avoid turning this into another religion thread so I'll cap it at pointing out that many religious beliefs make integration past a certain point almost impossible.

The younger Polish staff we have are not an issue in that sense, their problem is a lack of language skills and no requirement to improve them.

If you ask anyone who works in one form of compliance or another (especially employment), they'll all be able to list a load of EU regulations that we are held to which have no effect whatsoever on products or services.

I have no issue with reducing non-tariff barriers - if we want to sell goods to a country our exports have to conform to their rules and regs. My issue is with the other regulations, of which there are a surprisingly large amount.

In terms of the EU being socialist - it involves large flows of money from the rich nations to the poor ones. That sounds like the worst bits of socialism to me.

Anyway, I've made my vote. It was uncomfortable voting for something I feel so strongly against, but my wallet weighs heavier than my conscience and I like to keep it that way.

IT compliance is a large part of my job, we are part of a large group with a major US presence so have to adhere to SOX standards, there are just as many hoops to jump through there, which at the ground level hinder progress, it's not an EU only issue.

any idea how they did that one?
None at all. I was driving down to London that evening for the weekend to see Kate bush on the Friday and Spurs play WBA on the Sunday.
I just remember seeing Kirsty wark with John curtice on TV about 10.30 saying exit polls have it at 55 to 45.

The only way we will remove the evil of religion is by chipping away the edges and educating the young.

The more people we expose to our awesome western capitalism the faster this will happen imo.

I say welcome everyone, give em a beer and a pornhub login, peace on earth in our time.

Anecdotally I have the same language issue with young Brits, I wonder what the fudge happened to the education system since I left school.

That's a somewhat different case as your company has a presence in another country - I don't think that's the complain most people are holding over the EU.

There are plenty of ways around that - we have a company in the Czech Republic but so as to avoid our UK company having to abide by the huge levels of bureaucracy they have over there, our company simply holds all the shares in that company rather than being the same legal entity.

It's only a matter of time before your customers insist on your compliance with these (or similar) standards though, wherever you are based.

We only work with a handful of customers and they are now insisting on diversity quota's, at the minute it's unique to our sector (as far as I know) but it's only a matter of time before its general.

Lack of streaming mostly.

The best school my wife ever worked in used to be very good at recognising which students were never going to get GCSEs and put them in a separate class. They took them to constructions sites once a week, enrolled them in electrician/carpentry training schemes. Their English lessons were then spent teaching them how to write a CV, how to prepare for interviews, how to read a H&S induction form, etc. The end effect being that those kids almost all ended up gainfully employed and the kids in the normal lessons did better because the teachers could focus at a higher level.

That school essentially reintroduced the grammar school model via the back door. One model doesn't fit all, and it only equalises achievement by dragging down the top end.

I used to be able to rely on a university graduate (of any sort) being intelligent enough to be worthwhile interviewing for standard office jobs. Now we get graduates turning up all the time who can't even put a CV together.

We get a lot of customers demanding a lot of things - environmental compliance, employment standards, etc.

They keep asking, we keep telling them to keep their noses out of our business. We provide a premium product to a standard very few other companies can provide - they can take our product and methods or they can get an inferior one from a bunch of fudging hippies.

I can see why people want to come here the 5th ranked world economy, it rains and half the capital is thrown in to transport chaos, forgot the SERVICE providers have a duty to their shareholders (they give money to them), the punters (they pay money to them) go f*** themselves.

That's the saddest sentence in this thread. (and that's not a critiscism of you @scaramanga)

This from Facebook, made me chuckle.

friday's going to be amazing! i'm going to wake up in my Union Jack jim-jams to the sound of a squadron of Spitfires racing overhead and leaving a trail of hot buttered crumpets behind them

I'll run to the corner shop past all the british children who are laughing and squealing with excitement as they make a beautiful statue of the queen out of happy wriggling bulldog puppies - with two corgis for her eyebrows!

bunting flutters everywhere and the man from the betting shop steps into the street - "guess what! England just won the World Cup & The Ashes & The Grand National and here's the best bit - Boris put a bet on it for everyone! you're all MILLIONAIRES!!!"

the red arrows fly overhead dropping fish and chips as i walk into the corner shop, get my morning paper and go to the counter. "how much please?" i say to the asian lad there. "1 pence, everything in the whole shop now costs just 1p!" he laughs, "leave it on the counter, i'm off back to pakistan - we all are!"

and he's right! outside in the streets jolly old nigel farage is leading a huge crowd of happy foreigners - turks, poles, romanians, syrians - there's even a few English people with heavy suntans mixed up in there! nigel's playing Rule Britannia on a long pipe, rather like the pipe that takes the gas into your oven, and they're all following and smiling and talking foreign, bless them!

just then boris flies overhead in a concorde made of Bank of England gold - "don't worry!" he laughs "I've cut out all the bits the French made!" and with that he crashes into the ground at 1200 miles an hour, along with the economy, the country and all the dozy nostalgic foreigner-fearing fudgewits who fell for his hogwash.

grow up. wake up.

Not having a go at you but that was written by someone who has his head so far up his arse he can not see because he has so much brick in his eyes and mouth.

its not often we agree on things mate but at least you are honest about why you are voting remain, from what i can see around me is that most are doing so because of the scare stories about our pound falling, losing all our trade et, etc.

Maybe so. Just thought it was a bit of fun. There's been some cracking posts on social media during all this what-have-you.

The article I linked has a very good example of the bien-pensant reaction to leave campaigners.
