The Last Man Standing 17/18
Lets try a thread which will contain all negativity in one thread. I know its a hopeful hope but nevertherless, here are some of mine:

1. Defending corners. Bringing all 11 men back is futile and counterproductive. It gives no out ball and invites pressure to continue on us. I noticed AVB employed this tactic against QPR. Stop it now. Lennon and Defoe would be much more productive up the field and enable a swift counter attack. Their defensive qualities from corners are limited at best.

2. Attacking corners. Please can we have some more positive movement. Our lack of invention was in stark contrast to QPRs positive and dynamic movement. I have noticed for some seasons now that our starting position from corners is too near the goalline. This doesnt enable our players to get a run at the ball and makes it very difficult to find them as the goalie can come and claim far too easily. Can we also have someone at the near post so that if the ball is played too short (as it often is) then there is the opportunity for the flick on.

3. Free kicks. Can someone/anyone please score a meaningful goal from a direct freekick soon. We have (or had) specialist free kick takers - VDV, Bentley, Bale, Verts and noone seems to be able to do it for Spurs. It is really frustrating, Much more practice obviously required in training.

4. Offsides. Defoe and Ade really wind me up. I think stats show they are the two most caught offside in the Premiership. Please can someone teach them the offside rule. Defoe often just stands offside, never looks down the line to check his position and is sometimes lazy about coming back onto an onside position. Cant our coaches work with him on this.

Well there are a few. I feel better for getting that off my chest. Hopefully it will be theraputic for others as well.

Our corners are absolute dogbrick. Everything else I can deal with, but our inability to pose ANY threat from corners is pathetic. When we get a corner, I have no cause to get excited. Whoever takes them makes no difference, they're either floated in and easy for the keeper to gather, or don't go beyond the first man. Every other team I watch take these brilliant corners where they are played in at pace between the 6 yard box and the penalty spot. They always look dangerous as cause the defending team to, you know, actually defend. and the main thing is im not even sure the management are even realizing how brick our corners are! Its been going on for years!!

Oh and another pet hate, a new one for this season, why is Gareth Bale copying Ronaldo's stances and mannerisms?

Defoe's 'shoot on sight' policy - grinds me every time

Lennon's '4 turns before I cross it' move - put in the box first time, son! Don't let them re-group.

BAE's 'corckscrew' turn which often results in loss of possession, substantial pressure at the back, and sometimes even a cheap goal.

Brad's aimless long punts to no-one. Unecessary loss of possession.

Lennon's pick the ball up with the full back in front of him, cut inside, run ten yards across the pitch then pass the ball backwards to a midfielder/defender. Go at the fullback on the outside and get the ball in the box!

Noticed that on his freekick for Wales the other week and the ones he's taken since, not sure, bit weird though.

The 11 back for corners is ridiculous, put 2 of our players up on the half way line then they have to have at least 3 back maybe 4

Would love to see us score from a free kick in a big game. Closest we've come recently is when we got a penalty at the emirates from VDV's free kick, which he then scored from.

I don't think you can teach Defoe how to stay onside at this stage. It's just something strikers are either good at, or not. It's shocking really because my dad used to give me both barrels for being offside all the time in a game once when I was about 13! But that was just one game and in general I timed my runs well.

Conceding/scoring late goals is another pet hate of mine. We seem to accept that we won't score in some games whereas United and the scum play till they actually score! I don't know what the main factor of conceding them is, fitness? Concentration? Mentality? Probably a combination of the three.

I think that the space in the corner is too tight for them to get a decent run up and wrap their foot around the ball. Have a look the next time someone takes one, they really don't look comfortable..

Another pet hate: Our shocking away record at Old Trafford, Arsenal, Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Chelsea, Bolton, Southampton, any North East ground. Every club has a bogey ground, we've got about 10!

We must be one of the only PL regulars to have not won at Old Trafford.

Never seems to stop the opposition whipping in good balls against us at WHL

I think everyone back at a corner is aimed to increase the impact of our counter attacks.

If you have Defoe and Lennon on the half way line, then yes they have 3, maybe 4 players marking them and not in the box. However, with everyone back you have a more crowded penalty area, meaning less space for the attacking team, more bodies in the way for defending the goal etc. and most importantly from our point of view, they may only leave 1 defender on the half way line (marking noone), this leaves HUGE holes for Bale, Lennon, Walker, Ade, et al to run in to, we're basically backing ourselves in a foot race with the opposition. We have one of the fastest teams in the Prem, this is one of the few occassions we can work the length of the pitch to use that pace.

That's my theory on it anyway, I've not heard any other reason for doing this.

it's not that weird - players "did a Beckham" for years after her showed how effective his free kicks and crossing style was. changed those two parts of the game in many ways.

what does wind me up is that Bale seems to think he IS Ronaldo incarnate, with all his drifting and movement - he needs to get back to honing and perfecting his skills before (like being able to actually put i a half decent cross or get a shot on target)

i think he is starting to beleive the hype and becoming ineffective as a result.

It's getting better though. Last three seasons away v NE clubs:

P23 - W9-D4-L10

Not a bad away record in my book. If it wasn't for our dire performance at OT we'd be comfortably in credit.

Bale's rolling around like he can never walk again every time he gets fouled. At 1-1 against norwich in the final three minutes we are in the attack and he stays down untill the ball gets kicked out of play. He then gets back up and finishes the game without any problems. If we're trying to win a game in the final minutes you'd better be seriously injured if you stay down, in fact at all times you'd better be seriously injured if you stay down to get an injury treatment, but thats another story.

Players pretending to go in for aerial challenges. Defoe and Ade do it unfortunately. Ball ends up high and the striker will move to it, and attempt a half a yard jump with a limp flick of the head at it whilst the CB has a free clearance. So frustrating, just fudging challenge for the ball instead of trying to look like you're challenging for the ball. Once you notice it you see it all the time.
