Official - Defoe

Are we going to replace him in January if he goes though? I think most of us felt we needed an extra striker last January and we never got one, and it cost us to some degree.

Baldini has been in the job 6 months now, so you'd expect so.

Our transfers in the summer seemed to have much more of a strategy to them (except letting Benny go without replacement).

Tony Cottee talking up Defoe "I'd play him all day long". Why does every English pundit love Defoe? Jeff Stelling's response: "He has scored 1 premier league goal in 23 games."

I genuinely don't think a lot of pundits watch games on a regular basis anymore.

Plus they look like idiots if they change views. So they just persevere with the same view year after year regardless of evidence.

It's the easy, lazy, answer. If a pundit says that an English player is overrated or not very good then they have to explain themselves either to other pundits/journalists or the fans will want answers. You will have to justify your opinion, look at stats, compare the player to the other options at the club, you know, actually do work. You say that he's good and should play that's the end of the question, you collect your cash and go home.

I think he's a classic player from their era. Defoe's a poor man's Tony Cottee in some ways

The same reason they all want to see two men up top and wingers getting to the by-line.

They are all from pre-Wenger times and see Mike Bassett as a eulogy rather than a parody.

Defoe has had a good career at Tottenham with some superb moments. I wish him all the best in a new league and new country.

If defoe is off it makes no sense for him to hang around surely? or will he just stay training with us to stay fit. Meanwhile we have no back up strikers. The problem with playing 2 up front is you need a good back up in case of injury or to change the game up and we dont have one if Defoe is off.

or we just change formation slightly

I am just concerned about being linked liunked to Shane "1 league goal in 4" Long, vis really an upgrade on Defoe considering we have been struggling to score this season?

Quite pleased that he's off. Whilst he's been an ok servant for Spurs, he's never been top 4 standard, never been good enough to hold down an international spot and very limited in his ability. Hopefully we can bring in a more mobile, versatile striker in Jan in his place

Would rather see him go in January if he's leaving as it will force us to bring in a replacement. If he's only leaving in March I could see the club try to get away with not signing a replacement as there's not that much left of the season.

If we do sign a replacement in January Defoe will get very little time on the pitch anyway so staying until March won't do him that much good.

Totally agree, hope we dont gamble on just having Harry Kane as back-up from March onwards, because we all know what will happen the first match after Defoe leaves for the US

If he is going then let him go!

It seems like typical Levy smacking his lips with having the transfer money in the kitty and still JD as a back up. I would rather we had Obika on the bench!

Doesnt the MLS season start in around March anyways

So it would stand to reason he would stay for a while anyways

Off or not, I'd play him on Wednesday and give Soldado a little rest, bringing him on second half if necessary. Defoe, fresh, pent up with a point to prove....
