Wenger is the interesting option. He is going to retire from Arsenal soon, so an opportunity to manager an international side as a semi-retirement plan may appeal to him. Of course, he would be settling himself up to the press and fans if he failed.

So, what about Southgate until next summer, with Wenger taking on the World Cup in 2018?

I think that Wenger is to thin skinned and too much of a control freak to do the job. He would not get the level of autonomy that he would want and he would not be able to handle it when the press got on his back.

Ralf Rangnick 2nd fav. Why not. something completely different and will make England interesting for a short period of time. Think he has worked at clubs as general manager/DOF aint been successful in improving the whole structure philosophy of clubs (Schalke now benefitting the rewards of academy prospects, Red Bull Salzburg and now Leipzig who are on course to become a top 6 German team from obscurity.) I imagine he would want to change first team right down the the under 16s of England but will the FA give him that trust. Its the same with Klinsmann.

It all also depends on how much they the FA are prepared to spend.

The big club guys are not cheap. Sam at £3m was is at the cheap end. see bye cheap bye twice!

The problem for the FA is that over the last 18 months they have already gone through a huge restructure.

They have a new Chief Exec, new Chairman, replaced almost every department director, moved everyone involved with the teams from Wembley to Burton, appointed new specialist coaches, new specialist medical staff.... and more.

They then appointed Sam Allardyce while effectively saying the men's senior team should sit separately from the rest of the development pathway. In theory they've gone for a motivator who can prepare a team, not a coach to be involved with bringing players through.

Surely if that was a deliberate decision they have to appoint someone with a similar style?

Wenger's contract at Arsenal expires at the end of the season, while Pochettino's Spurs deal runs until 2021

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and Tottenham counterpart Mauricio Pochettino say they are open to managing England in the future.

The Football Association is searching for a new England boss following Sam Allardyce's departure after 67 days.

Asked about taking the job, Wenger, 66, said: "One day, if I'm free, why not?" Pochettino, 44, said: "Yes, why not? In the future."

Both said they are committed to their current clubs.

I think he'd be a great England coach but the smart coach would wait until all the academies and grassroot sports facilities are lined up to play the "England way" ...
