Lucas Moura

I think that what @Bedfordspurs says above is telling. Yes, people are entitled to have bricky views. People who don’t even have the grace to keep those views quiet when, presumably, all of their employer’s highly paid PR and comms flunkeys are begging them to put a cork in it? Those are likely bad people.

I agree but when you are speaking about professional footballers you are dealing with people with a limited grasp of reality.

I’m sure the club privately wish players would keep quiet when it comes to politics. Just think it’s a dangerous road to go down to tell players not to air their political views, especially if it’s just because they disagree with the views. What if a player came out and supported a radical left wing politician but the club agree with the views? Should they step in and tell them to keep quiet in that situation also? I’m always disappointed when an American athlete or famous person in general comes out in support of Donald Trump, but I respect they are entitled to their views just as I am allowed to vehemently disagree with his warped sense of reality.

Or just people of conviction? No one believes their views are bricky so Moura banging on about Bolsonaro is no different to the world and its mother posting and tweeting about Sanna Marin or Zelensky over the last few months.

I think it is wise to keep any political views in check if youre in the public eye and not a politician. It's just too emotive. But I don't think it makes people bad in itself.

No different? That is not just moral relativism, it is moral relativist extremism: some sort of Humean zealotry.

Its a real fine line, there was a great thread on here about the multi colour wear around gay pride and its tough, where is that line between beliefs and bigotry and how do you police it? In the modern world what are frankly bigoted views can be passed of as "beliefs" or "free speech" its difficult. I do however feel there should be more to be done to educate or open dialogue on this with players because thats the route to better understanding

Judging relatively young people, who've forgone much of their education to hone their footballing talent, on their politics, says more about the viewer than the footballer. Mouras expertise is playing football, not understanding the details of economics, socialism etc. If you want to take anything from Moura's support of Bolsolano, it should be that he's a loyal guy, probably backing his father or mother's political stance.

True

On the flip side having lived in many a different country and cultures, having all the free time and fortune to learn and develop has not happened which is a shame.

It probably happens post-football for those that have a desire to learn more. Quite a few take degrees after they hang up their boots. Graham Potter for example.

We wouldn't judge Boris on his rugby skills, or Truss on her Badmington. Why do we judge footballers on their politics?

Lets be fair though, its alot harder to expect a politician to turn into a professional sports person than a sports person to become aware of social issues

Like I said earlier sports people are given a much easier ride on this stuff because people struggle to separate their sporting admiration from whats normal.

i don't see what's wrong about moira airing his views about politics. he is a citizen and has a right to sway his people.
and it doesn't break any laws. it might break the internet but if we all stopped reading the internet and commenting there wouldn't be a problem either.

From Reddit:

Full quote (he was asked about upcoming brazilian election): "I dont have any problem to give my opinion about that. I'm a right-wing conservative, i follow christian and family principles. I don't see any perfect presidential candidate but i can't deny that Bolsonaro is the guy who come closest to what i believe. Lula (left wing candidate) supports everything that i'm against... left wing ideology, socialism and even communism which is nothing different from Nazism. Support Lula is almost impossible.
If this is what Lucas said then it sounds logical.

You've cracked why we end up with such lackluster politicians! Anyone can do it...

Yep, i'm a fan of lula and dislike bolsanaro. But communism or socialism is not something i'd want. I'm a social democrat.

By socialism i mean that you don't own your own home or business and outcomes are equal no matter your skill or effort.

Google socialism definition or look in a dictionary.

socialism
/ˈsəʊʃəlɪz(ə)m/

noun

  1. a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism#:~:text=Socialism is a left-wing,as opposed to private ownership.

Socialism is a left-wing to far-left[1][2] economic philosophy and movement encompassing a range of economic systems characterized by the dominance of social ownership[3] of the means of production[4][5] as opposed to private ownership.

Some people may disagree with that definition. But that is what many people will think of when the term is used. It is what why many people are opposed to "socialism".

The left would be far better off if they were very clear in what they represent. Bernie sanders for some reason described himself as a democratic socialist. When his actual policies were moresocial democratic. These things get jumped on by the opposition.

perhaps you need to expand your reading and understanding. Social democracy is from the socialist school of thought.

It is an off shoot that has developed into believing in a mixed economy. The nordic model. They don't describe themselves as socialists.

"I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism," he said. "Therefore, I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy."

In Rasmussen's view, "The Nordic model is an expanded welfare state which provides a high level of security to its citizens, but it is also a successful market economy with much freedom to pursue your dreams and live your life as you wish."
