James Maddison

This could be a major, and very interesting, discussion.

I personally think that if we denounce football tribalism and marginalize it/force it into redundancy, we will be stripping the game of one of its great, great assets, as well as denying a core element of humanity. I think I know what you’re getting at, and there needs to be balance i.e. being able to shake hands, understand we’re all human, have friends who support other teams, etc. Very very important. But equally, the energy of traveling to matches, especially away games, congregating with your fellow supporters and getting behind the team for an afternoon is absolutely tribal.
I think we're on the same page. When I said tribalism, toxic tribalism is probably a better description. The hate and vitriol etc.

For example, if one of us was a high level business strategist (I know right! Can you imagine?!), it would be perfectly acceptable to work for Arsenal or Chelsea because it's for the good of your career and it's an opportunity you will enjoy. That's how I see the Maddison position. As a fan - doesn't like Tottenham. As a job - Tottenham is a great opportunity for him. Toxic tribalism would have seen him turn us down. Healthy rivalry (which has within some tribalism) means it doesn't matter.

Within reason I quite like that term but you could see how it could be mis- interpreted to extreme levels

It's quite a common term up here for old firm fans, they go to games, sing the unsavoury songs and go back to normal after the game.
Of course as you point out some take it validation for their all encompassing hatred and can't leave it at the gate.

Agreed mate

I like the hunger as he singles out playing the goons. He loves playing football. Not all players are so eager. Confidence in your ability gives that kind of belief.

Edit: looks like its not playing here. Its at 10:03
