You can't knock 50 goals for your country, but Lineker won the golden boot at a World Cup, Greaves did well at a World Cup, ditto Charlton, Rooney has to do better in a tournament to be talked about with those names.

Yes, he achieved a great feat by becoming England's all time leading goal scorer but no, he certainly isn't the greatest English striker of all time.
Spurs have had at least three strikers who have been better English strikers than Rooney. Rooney had potential from a young age, but it's almost as if he settled on being just good enough, and never really reached the heights that many had expected from him given his early prowess as a teen star.
I don't doubt that he's a good player, but I find it hard to elevate him to consistently World Class. Rooney has rarely been considered within the top three World players, has he ever been?, and the only comparisons that are drawn are during his purple patches in the season.
Strangely, given his newly held record, he is far from consistent, has failed to hit the mark in big tournaments and enjoys a reputation built on a flurry of goals, generally against weaker teams, rather than for playing well against the best - although, I will confess that he has had his moments.
I'm now going to cheer Kane on his journey to beating Rooney's record. I'm confident that, barring injury, he will get there.

I don't know how you can make such a prediction. Who's to say Kane's drought won't continue? I don't think it will but Rooney could score 30 goals for example between now and the summer.

To be fair, England do need someone to play the DM role, and Shelvey, sadly, was the best option last night.
Similarly, I think Delph is the second best bet to play alongside the DM in Wheelchair's absence.
As for Milner - his time is done at international level.
I'd switch Rooney for Lallana in your four there, but agree with the principle.

I'm a huge Rooney fan - or was until very recently - but I do agree.
I just don't see how any team can succeed with someone with no mobility up front. Even though Kane isn't particularly fast, he does move well.
Similarly, Sturridge, with his pace and finishing could be very interesting - although I've doubts over his hold up play, which I think is crucial if we're assuming that Sterling and Walcott, with their pace, will be expected to get ahead of the striker.

not surprised to see a backlash against Rooney, I don't get the hate, he's not telling people he's anything his isn't, he's not stroppy when others score or take awards, he's a hard working team player that has scored a few goals
I've not seen any deification in the press so far so I assume those that have are reading rags or listening to no mark pundits on radio and TV, if so you only have yourself to blame

I think that's a bit of a straw man.
There's no real backlash, people are just saying he's not very effective these days - which he isn't. They're rightly concerned that he's unlikely to be dropped from England, which is relevant given there are players who would fit the system better than him. A lone striker needs to be mobile and Rooney isn't. I don't understand what it is that he offers there - it's not pace, it's not strength, it's not finishing and I'm not convinced it's work rate either.
He's a great option to have, but he shouldn't be guaranteed his place, which he seems to be.
Kane, in my mind, should be starting ahead of him, as a striker, due to his movement and hold up play.
Lallana, in my mind, should be starting ahead of him, as a number 10, due to his ingenuity.

I think that much of the disappointment with Rooney is that he promised to be so much more at 17.

True, but it's not for the lack of effort on his part, he's rarely let a manager down on the pitch (a couple of stupid reds noted).
He can't control the dizzy expectation of others. I'm sure that United feel they have had their money's worth and he has, let's not forget, just set a record that was beyond both Greaves and Lineker, two of the greatest forwards in the history of the game. That he isn't in their class makes his achievement all the more impressive, his longevity, when compared to the likes of Owen, who at one point seemed nailed on to take the record should also be applauded.
He has, in my opinion, been England's best player for a very long time, since Beckham left the squad, I find the keenness many have to shuffle him off into retirement as lamentable, we'll miss him when he's gone, just like we do Becks.
