I think Southgate needs the midfielders to be safer in possession rather than spontaneous, so I can see why he goes for Lingard and Ox. In this system Alli would suit the Vardy/Sterling role but I can see why they are ahead of him there.

He’s better suited to the high tempo game we play, Southgate is trying something a bit different. I do like it though.
