Hi-Fi

I used to be mad for it when I was younger. Buying pre-amps and power amps, and spending fortunes on speakers

Now I'm happy with a simple all-in-one home cinema

I used to be quite interested in the whole home cinema thing, but I've come to realise that it's not happening until I can build a room specifically designed for it to have any real benefit from it. My living room as of now would look fwacked up with a huge sound system in it.

Right now I've got a 5 year old Onkyo receiver with a pair of ?ú100 Dynavoice speakers hooked up. Hardly use it, I'm busy being a dad and spend my spare evenings falling asleep on the sofa watching golf... Got a very nice pair of Martin Lab speakers sitting in the basement. They cost me ?ú1000 some 15 years ago and can play the brick out of my house, but I have absolutely no use for them right now.

The ultimate playroom for me would be a combined cinema / golf simulator. Just need some lottery money first...

I've already reserved a bedroom in the house we're about to buy for a cinema room.

Currently have to live with basic separates for home cinema, everything has to pass the waf so it's Bose and the like. I'll be starting with an HD projector and go from there.

There's only one rule, no 3D.

I applaud you my good man

Chap I used to work with had spent thousands on his hifi. I'm still pretty much entry level (Cambridge Audio amp, CD and tuner and Mordaunt Short 902i's), if I ever have the money I'll upgrade, I'm still one for sitting in front of the stereo and listening to an album from start to last.

Good rule.

Have never had the cash to get seriously interested in Hi-Fi, but would love to own a decent set-up some time. Since I basically do nothing but listen to music I really should've gotten something cool, but brick is expensive.
There's a store close to the guest house here in Chiang Mai, one day I'll go over there and test some of their gear, maybe pay them a couple baht and just sit there for an hour listening to some of my own music really really loud.

I have a fairly serious Naim audio set up I bought about 8 years ago. Like an earlier poster said, there is nothing like putting an album on and listening from start to finish.

well, i like tossing whilst doing it.

I can take it or leave it on the album though.

How's this for thread recycling, Marky will be pleased ;)

Question for anyone who knows about such things (Boonie that means you); on my hifi setup, the volume (which is the standard, 360 degree dial type) seems to offer a very narrow band between too quiet and too loud, the majority of the range seems entirely redundant. So the question is is my amp broken, or would different speakers react differently to the amp's power output, and can I do anything about it (pre-amp or whatever)?

Really annoys me that bloody volume control.

You need an amp that goes up to 11

They are louder

a quick couple of questions also - i have been given two fairly big floor standing speakers, don't think they are particularly high end or whatever but id like to make use of them in my games room, im just not sure how best to link everything together, a recommendation would be great for exactly what it is i need

currently i just have my Playstation3 & Wii connected straight to an LCD TV - the two speakers just have some basic stranded speaker cable connected to the back (NOT hardwired)

i assume i need an amp of some sort, which id then use to link everything together - what sort of amp should i be looking for (not interested in a cd player or anything like that) also im thinking of getting surround sound - can i add to the two speakers i currently have or do i need to buy a complete surround sound system kit ?

we're talking budget here guys so no hif-fi porn please !

You want an AV Receiver of some sort by the sounds of things Bill, although you can use a standard hifi amp to handle the sound for basic stereo.

How does a Wii connect to the telly?

standard red yellow white AV cable - so a basic amp will not allow me to send my video via it like an AV receiver does ?

I have an Onkyo AV receiver and some Bose Acoustic Mass IV speakers. Not amazing sound quality but decent enough and I really couldnt ever go back to having massive speakers, people really underestimate how much room they take up.

When I get a bigger house I may reconsider.
