Hi-Fi

No, wouldn't have any video inputs on it (or outputs, obviously :)).

cheers

any thoughts as to whether i can use the two speakers i have as a part of a surround sound system ? as in i could buy separate speakers to add to the ones i already have rather than buy a full kit ?

Bit beyond my level that, I know you can buy separate centres and sub woofers, but whether you have to match up certain specs to use them within the same system I'm not sure.

I think you can in theory connect any speakers to an amp provided the amp can handle multiple speakers etc, whether they will all be at the right wattage etc to actually sound good is a different matter.

Question for Boonie.

Do you think that an amp that costs ?ú2000 back in 1980 is better than an amp built today for ?ú1000?

a quick couple of questions also - i have been given two fairly big floor standing speakers, don't think they are particularly high end or whatever but id like to make use of them in my games room, im just not sure how best to link everything together, a recommendation would be great for exactly what it is i need

currently i just have my Playstation3 & Wii connected straight to an LCD TV - the two speakers just have some basic stranded speaker cable connected to the back (NOT hardwired)

i assume i need an amp of some sort, which id then use to link everything together - what sort of amp should i be looking for (not interested in a cd player or anything like that) also im thinking of getting surround sound - can i add to the two speakers i currently have or do i need to buy a complete surround sound system kit ?

we're talking budget here guys so no hif-fi porn please !

Yopu will need an amp to run the floorstanders, so if you go for an AV amp you can use the floorstanders as front left/right the small speakers for rears however you will need to add a centre speaker. A sub is another must have for proper surround but you could always make do without one until budget allows.

Depends on the amp really! But I would say if the amp hadnt been raced or rallied then yes the 1980 2k amp will out perform the new one, bear in mind that 2k amp is now probably 5k and the technology hasnt really changed at that level of equipment.

How's this for thread recycling, Marky will be pleased ;)

Question for anyone who knows about such things (Boonie that means you); on my hifi setup, the volume (which is the standard, 360 degree dial type) seems to offer a very narrow band between too quiet and too loud, the majority of the range seems entirely redundant. So the question is is my amp broken, or would different speakers react differently to the amp's power output, and can I do anything about it (pre-amp or whatever)?

Really annoys me that bloody volume control.

Could be a few things

1. The volume pot is broken - easy repair for any hi-fi shop
2. The Speakers are mismatched to the amp - impedance is too high or low. - Check what ohms the amp is rated at and also the speakers.
3. The amp is very underpowered - the higher the wattage the better control you get a low volume as the speakers are still being driven efficiently.

Let me know what amp and speakers you have and I can make a better diagnosis.

Looks like a common complaint (here). Probably a cheap volume control and pot. Cambridge audio stuff can be a bit hit and miss with quality as they are made in different factories all over China. I'm not a fan of Cambridge Audio or Richer sounds as a whole to be honest.

i have the 640a as well and you're right. one speaker cable got yanked when moving house and the amp seems to have shorted. haven't got around to getting it repaired. making do with my sennheiser for the time being. use to have the arcam alpha from the 90's but to this day covet my brother's old naims.

Cheers Boonie. Having lived with the CA for a few years now, I'd not buy another one. They get good reviews from What Hifi etc, and the sound does seem good (when I can tippy tappy the volume so I don't get an asbo - or whatever they're called now), but the build quality leaves a bit to be desired - as well as this some button presses don't seem to take first time etc, small annoyances like that.

I like RS though, steered me well when buying my telly (told me to wait for a better, cheaper one).

What Hi-Fi will always give good reveiws to their biggest advertisers products (Richer Sounds own Cambridge Audio and Mordant Short) Richer Sounds Salesman always push those two producs too. That is why I dont have faith with RS. One of the best Cambridge priced amps I have ever heard was this one beleive it or not!

sooooo, the two floorstanders i already have as front L/R - two smaller speakers for rear L/R and a centre speaker plus a sub woofer would give me working surround sound ? including the receiver obviously

So 7 years on. What’s everyone doing for hifi, music and cinema nowadays?

I’m proper back into it now (whilst enjoying my new found semi retirement!)

Trying to keep a foot in all camps, so have built a kickass LG OLED, Yamaha AVR, AppleTV4K, Oppo UHD & Dali Home Theatre system, a mutts-nutts Arcam digital streaming DAC and SACD set up, and a retro Roksan and Pro-Ject 2 channel analogue vinyl rig with a sexy glow-in-the-dark valves pre-amplifier. Just for bricks and giggles and cos I could.

If anyone else has a bone-on for thes sort of eurodance records still, let me know and we can waffle tech brick.

I'm a bit into DIY Hi-Fi. Working on a new centre speaker now, but can't decide on what woofers to use. Going for an as small as possible enclosure, without sacrificing too much sound quality.
Gonna use 4 4" inch woofers with a tweeter in the middle, in a slightly curved baffle.

Working on the crossover now, with using different woofers, to get the best result.

Wow, that’s proper black ops stuff right there! Sounds awesome. Have you got a background in making kit then? I wouldn’t know how to even start sizing it and wiring internals up, let alone to even think about getting the timbre matches right etc

Post some pics when the bad boy is done??

I worked with building professional P.A speakers for DPAC and NPAC (Danish and Norwegian PA Centre), so I'm not a total noob in speaker design. Crossovers on the other hand, is not something I'm very skilled at, as all the pa stuff used active crossovers (digital).
If you want a near perfect, smooth frequency response, a passive crossover can get quite complicated, with L-pad, notch filters, baffle step correction in addition to the Hi-pass and Low-pass. And quite expensive too!
The x-over I'm most pleased with for this project, is getting close to £200 in parts for just the x-over

Designed another one with fewer parts, and pretty close response for around £70, which is probably what I'll go for.

I just want it to sound good, not exceptional :)

I'll post some pics when I get going.
