European Super League - Dead on arrival

It is commercialism over sport imo. Putting how a business functions over free competition. Owner greed is probably a misnomer you are right. Most of these guys are multimillionaires. They are simply representing their organisations who don’t get a representative slice of the pie they bring in. The other big issue is the debt Covid has shoved onto these clubs. Football clubs are not big businesses. In the grand scheme they are medium sized. You could say. Losing 70m a year due to Covid has forced owners hands somewhat. Without the ESL some of these clubs will have to borrow (more) or reign in the spending. That threatens their hegemony. No one likes to give up their dominance without a fight.

Yeah good points about representing their organisations - I think you might be right that it’s more of that / an ego thing than personal financial gain.

Another thing that tinkled me off is Perez saying "We need this for football because there are so many low quality games".

How can a man so clueless about what the essence of the game is be in charge of one of the most prestigious clubs in the world? Talk about ivory tower thinking. Greedy prick.

The mistake they made was going too big too soon. They could have come together and bent UEFA over a table with some threats and hoovered up more CL money. Not that I'd like to see that - the game is too heavily weighted towards the big clubs as it is. Now they may have to go back with their tales between their legs over something that was never going to fly with the fans because of how anti-competitive it was. I've no real sympathy for anyone involved - us included.

We'll probably be the last ones standing and still finish second.

You have to question their strategy. Normally, politicians say, will drip feed and socialise an idea. Or outline the issue first, then feed in the solution. The whole thing looked rushed and ill conceived.

It seems an unusual move to go public with the idea as a done deal with no obligation / penalty for not consulting all the clubs not to change their mind? It had to be a unified approach to have any chance of succeeding.

I see it as Barca and Real being desperate for more money to pay for more super star players, Italian clubs obviously want money, but also guaranteed qualification at a time when their league is starting to look competitive. American owned English clubs will obviously push for anything that gives them more money and the rest are worried about being left behind.

Legals see whether any legal challenges come out of this or whether all 12 back our gracefully together. I expect the latter with some message to uefa about how crap they are

Seems like a misjudged attempt at pressuring UEFA. Can't believe any of them thought this would be received positively by the fans.

Someone said The Times broke the story early - maybe before auch things were in place??
