Europa League 2013-14: Dnipro (UKR), Benfica (POR)/PAOK (GRE)

Re: Europa League 2013-14

Sevilla will indeed be the ones who will take Malaga's place in the Europa League. Real Betis qualified for the competition regardless of this scramble.

If Malaga's appeal had been successful they'd have taken the Spanish spot starting at the play-off stage. Real Betis would've had to start in an earlier qualifying round.

I believe Rayo Vallecano are awaiting an appeal decision.

Re: Europa League 2013-14

Great draw for Prestatyn Town v Leipajas Metalurgs. A trip to Latvia. One for Chich IIRC

Re: Europa League 2013-14

Who are the 10 highest teams by co-efficient in it this year?

Valencia
Tottenham Hotspur
Dynamo Kiev
Sporting Braga
Stuttgart
Bordeaux
Rubin Kazan
Sevilla
Standard Liège
Udinese

A few other teams with high coefficients will enter after being knocked out of the Champions League qualification.

Re: Europa League 2013-14

Id fancy us to beat all those teams over 2 legs to be honest. We should really be aiming to get to semis minimum.

Cue a re-starting of teh age old debate of whether we should field our first 11 in the Europa or prioritise the league and/or how much we should rotate!!

For what its worth, I'm of the view that your players cant play every Thurs and Sat/Sun but dont see why someone cant play in some Thurs games plus the league games at the weekend. As such I think we should always play say 3 to 5 our of our genuinely first choice players each Thurs and then fill in with other decent squad players like:

- Freidel
- Caulker, Dawson, Naughton and/or Rose etc at the back
- Siggy, Holtby and/or Carroll in midfield (assuing Sandro, Paulinho and Dembele are first choice midfield)
- Dempsey, Townsend and/or Defoe/Ade up top (depending on who we sign)

Throw in a small number of our real first 11 to that lot and you have a very good team and certainly good enough for group stages and first 1 or 2 knock out rounds

Re: Europa League 2013-14

On a separate note, Pasching from Austria must be the smallest club in the draw. Not even top tier in Austrian football, made the cup final, knocking out Rapid and Salzburg on the way. Not even sure they will be allowed to stage their home games in their own stadium.

3rd Division team according to Wikipedia!

And...................they used to have a player called Ice Cream!

I wonder how teams in the CL can play on a Wed/Sat yet we cant play on a Thurs/Sun ?

Most teams rotate players; difference is that if you're Man U, you can rest RvP for a league game and not worry about dropping points because you have Chicarito or Rooney or someone else decent to come in

Ourselves and Arse are at the sort of level where we have the 'burden' of teh extra workload from European games but not the absolute quality that teams like Man C, Man U and cheatski have

Wednesday - Saturday is the worst case scenario for the CL teams and is only likely to happen less than half of their games. Half the CL games are on a Tuesday for starters, and some of their following league games is on a Sunday.

Seems fairly accepted that in those cases it's more of a problem that a tough PL game the weekend before the CL game can impact their performance in the CL although there's probably still an effect of having twice as many games in a run of games compared to your opponents.

Either way the European hangover effect is fairly widely accepted. A quick article here that was the first I could find, I think there are more comprehensive articles out there though:

http://www.kickoff.co.uk/200/champions-league-hangover/

Manchester United have been beaten 15 times in their last 119 Premier League games, with eight of these defeats coming in the 31 fixtures played in the days after a Champions League encounter. This means that they have been beaten just seven times in their other 88 clashes, suggesting that there may just be something in this notion of a European hangover.

Re: Europa League 2013-14

UEFA has suspended Fenerbahçe from European competition on a 2+1 year ban for alleged involvement in match-fixing.

Re: Europa League 2013-14

Fenebahce kicked out of Champs League. Does this now go to a Turkish team or highest team in UEFA coefficient??

Re: Europa League 2013-14

Key to any long term success is Bale. We win the Europa League and finish 5th, then I can't see us keeping hold of him. Combined with the brutal truth that we played pretty much our strongest team in last year's competition and were brick, I'd be quite happy to fudge this tinpot shell of what used to be a great completion right off and concentrate on the league.

Yeah but then on the flipside they play Sat/Sun then on a Tuesday whereas we have 2 more days rest before our game.

Fact is you play 2 games in a week regardless of how they fit and other teams seem to manage it, whats the point of holding players back as if we were still in the CL we would still face the same issue and I bet then people would say first 11 every time as it's the CL which clearly indicates whether or not people want to admit it that it's only because it's the Europa League that they would even consider playing a weakened team.
