Brennan Johnson

I do. People calling him a coward and a bottle job because his levels are off, even when playing a few days after having his head sliced open.

I've gone back 4 or 5 pages and have not seen anyone call him a coward or 'bottle-job'. People have said rightly he has backed out of 50/50 challenges, that he is lacking confidence and that he needs to offer more. But those comments have all been combined with people also stating they think he'll come good.

A lot of the United team containing Beckham, Scholes etc were that age (or younger) when they won the league, if I recall it right? It’s not really an excuse.

That said, Johnson reminds me a lot of Bale; I think he’ll come good.

Rotated into a team full of seasoned pros like bruce, pallister, irwin, Cantona, Hughes etc Al.
I know the legend has it different but that's the real.

There was a bit of it in the match thread I think.

He looks like a ballerina turned footballer. Graceful and elegant. Maybe should start him on a boxing course to develop new skills.

Said before that I like him. He gets into good positions but sometimes he makes the wrong choice (shoot or pass) - but he is not the only one that does that. It feels like he needs to grow in confidence. That will happen as long as his team mates trust in him.
I have noticed though that he does like a bit of Dele-like 'flick' from time to time. Did it last week early on against Everton, and Ange didn't look too impressed (well, he had his head hung down, which I interpreted as 'not happy'). And again tonight he did a back-flick that went straight to a Brighton player. I don't think he has the luxury to do that just yet.
Not good tonight, but then again, he wasn't on his own there.

This is my hang up with him

- He gets into amazing positions (that's a skill)
- End product can be brick, 2-3 times a game in his position costs us.
- Hides at times, again, compare to a Gil or Royal, players that have or are struggling, whatever complaints you may have, they don't hide, they don't back out of 50/50s.

There is a player there, but it may be next season before we see it. We need someone else to rotate in.

What may be being referred to (and being taken out of context) by @90291Spur is me in the match thread saying that there was an element of cowardice in Johnson's "closing down" of Estupinan's shot.

It had the look of someone who was there to make up the numbers defensively but didn't actually want to do what was required. Quite similar to Son when he was chewed out by Lloris for not really doing the work required a while back. I don't think my reaction was knee jerk response but I haven't seen the incident since so I'm open to the idea of it possibly being a harsh view , but even if so, I wasn't labelling Brennan as a coward.

I'm not really sure about the excuse of him not looking brilliant because he wasn't expected to play much football makes any sense. If he wasn't playing it would apparently unfair to make any judgement being he wouldn't have played enough. It's fair enough to want more from a 50 million signing, and he has been more than decent but not doing the defensive work isn't a new critique, it's followed Johnson from his time at Forest.

I do like the guy and he has been unfortunate in terms of that hamstring injury, the cut recently suffered which doesn't help settling in. It takes some players a while to feel like they really belong and whilst it's not really relevant it may affect fans perception that he's got nervous baby face look about him but it's what Ange thinks that matters - I bet whilst he is happy with his output there is plenty more to come. Like you Mullet I don't see anyone writing him off or jumping at the chance to be over the top in terms of criticism of him.

He delivers such a great clean drive across the goal, all that's needed for the striker is to get a good contact and divert it into goal.

He is part of two goal plays we absolutely have in the system

- His go wide/deep at pace, early cross across the front of goal to Richi, same goal vs. both Bournemouth and Everton
- 2nd is Son/Udogie going into box at edge of pitch with the cut back cross late

Re Johnson, he's continuing that not great but contributing (said my piece about his shortcomings), really hope we get some competition for him (either in players coming back or new buy)

And there's that conniving, Arse-loving barstid Charlie Eccleshare throwing shade all over Johnson in the Athletic. What a fcukin' donkey. So full of schitt. Will never pay for it while he is on the Spurs beat

I don't see 'knee-jerk opinions'. The comments have a common theme that it's clear he has the goods, but just needs to offer a bit more at the moment.
I'm beginning to think the most knee jerk comment is the one saying, knee jerk comment. Maybe me saying that the most knee jerk comment is someone saying knee jerk comment. Is in itself a knee jerk comment.
