I'm sure the people that are in the vicinity of Watertown and Cambridge have thoroughly enjoyed their "live entertainment"

The MIT officer who was shot had his name released... he was shot outside the iconic Stata Center at MIT, right across from the building where I used to work (brain & cognitive sciences). This is a bit surreal for me and am finding it hard to focus at work with this ongoing manhunt. I hope they catch this prick alive and release him in the South End to let the people of Boston deal with him.

Forgot to mention: police scanner was taking down to protect law enforcement and to prevent compromising the manhunt.

So why is it on tv all the time I dont tell me its because it news.. the public loves this stuff it makes great tv. Are all those thousands of realty programs or live car chases shown in the US just news?

You really ought to word your thoughts a little more carefully lest you come off as insensitive.

The media does tend to make a circus of things, but this is an ongoing investigation. Some people that happen to live in the area that's being canvassed actually need to follow the events because they are being directly affected by them.
But to say that we "love this stuff" is misleading. Maybe those outside the US can view this because they're removed from these events, just as we in the US view the many bombings that occur in the Middle East with almost dulled emotion.

I just want them to catch the son of a bitch.

I had an old radio (1994ish) and, as you say, if I moved it to the far right I could listen in to telephone conversations!! Dunno who they were but always two women gassing about something or other :)

There is one which hasn't been 'proven' to such an extent but always makes me laugh. That there wasn't a conspiracy to kill JFK and it was the act of a lone gunman, Oswald. As detailed by the Warren Commision. However, to believe that means you would have to believe in the Magic Bullet Theory and believe that by pure coincedence, countless witnesses at the scene of the shooting ALL died before being able to give evidence. Maybe we should set up a different thread for this discussion should you wish to pursue it, I noticed earlier a request not to discuss conspiracies here. I agree with the sentiment on an empathetic level even though I disagree with the request on a public forum.


To bring this back to topic. I am finding it puzzling that no group has come forward yet to claim responsibility, it makes me question whether this attack was conducted by a loner/small group rather than an affiliated terrorist organisation?

It's great to see so many of my American friends vowing to either run the race or attend it next year. Whilst we live in a world full of ugliness and hate, there is nothing greater than the human spirit to love and overcome.

I can't find one using Google and the example you give is one of not proven. I want to find "there's the small matter of many 'unbelievable' conspiracy theories turning out to be true" answers. I want to find an unbelievable conspiracy theory that turned out to be a definite truth. Can you point me to an exact one?

Because people want to get the full picture of what is going on. You certainly get far more information watching CNN than you would simply reading the papers or going online. And people watch it in hope that the people responsible will ultimately be caught.

I certainly hope so. The fact that they've suspended train service between NYC and Boston could suggest that the suspect might've ended up outside the police perimeter, but they're still combing the area which is quite large and encompasses a wide swath of Watertown. Basically just tons of police in the area with automatic rifles and fatigues in this suburban neighborhood. All residents still expected to stay inside. Expecting an update from law enforcement officials sometime soon.
