Ross Barkley

If you think of it logically, if any team with the spending power of Chelsea is honestly interested in a Barkley it would have been done and dusted a while back. Why now? He's injured, and what other targets have they missed out on to switch their attention to Barkley? It's nonsense.

His work rate is absolutely fine, and has been shown statistically a number of times in that very thread.
Care to share them?

I've posted his stats for the past few years here and his tackles/interceptions are way down on what our forward players are producing. And that's for a team that spends less time on the ball than ours.

People were saying the same thing about Lamela . Like Lamela , Barkley has good vision hence the high number of chances created . So not sure where the lack of intelligence comes from. just not the standard sideways passing English midfielder.

Very subjective quality that cannot be proved or disproved. Would love to get him but not confident, think we have left it too late..
No, no they weren't. At least not any of those that have any kind of a clue about football.

The main concern on this forum was (especially reading between the lines if what people were posting) whether some gelled-up fancy pants foreigner would be "man enough" (whatever the fudge that is) for the PL.

I'm not sold on Barkley, but Poch could potentially turn him into a better player. However, if he goes to Chelsea, that has SWP written all over it, he'll never survive there.

Nothing like him.... As is often the case, I wonder here whether you have actually watched the player you are commenting on?

The people thinking he can convert into CM are probably the same ones who were convinced Walker would become a CB (because, like now, a tabloid wrote it and it kept getting repeated). I did say why I thought he was like Huddlestone - an attacking player who people assume can defend because he's built like a CB.

I've also said he's like David Dunn (feet can't cash the Roy of the Rovers cheques his mind is writing) and Fellaini (physical player in the #10 position).

Have to say I've never ever heard anyone mention Walker playing centre back. Right wing yes and also strangely centre forward as that was where he started playing

Barkley isn't built like a centre back. He is a big lad but he is a strong player too hence why people think of him as a dembele replacement which I don't see. For me he is 100% an attacking player who to date has had some awful coaches and team mates. With better people around him he could become much better and I believe relatively quickly

Saying that Chelsea need stocking fillers in their squad and he is cheap enough for them to not worry about the fee. They also need some English players on their squad!!!

It was written loads on here in 2009. He played once there at England youth level, a tabloid commented on this, and suddenly (in connection with us signing the physically smaller RB Naughton at the same time) it was received wisdom that Walker would be a future CB.

I agree Barkley's a 100% attacking player, but just like you can't teach Sissoko to control a ball at 28, I don't think you can teach Barkley to tackle, have positioning sense and intelligent decision-making at 23. It also seems pretty pointless when we already have Winks who can do all that, and Onomah coming too - both of whom have far higher ceilings.

But he is there to be creative and people said Erisken couldn't do defensive work only last season... yet he is key to instigating the press by making the first move. He learnt that from Poch

Barkleys decision making needs to improve but look at the asissts he has supplying some crap players

And winks and Onomah are centre midfielders. Winks is IMO dembeles replacement

I cant find them off hand, but Im sure they were in this thread.

I think it was sprints/ground covered kind of thing rather than takles/interceptions. It showed work rate really wasnt an issue.

What you are talking about it productivity, in which his stats arent as favourable. Though I still think there is mitigation in that in that most of them come from being a Martinez side. IE, completely disorganised with no mind to defending...

I think we are kind of agreeing. I'm saying Barkley isn't (nor will ever be) a CM. But I have no problem (for a smallish fee; ideally free on 1 Feb) with him coming and taking Sissoko's spot as 5th choice AM (behind Alli, Eriksen, Son and Lamela). But I'd see him more directly as Alli's cover, not Eriksen's (that's Lamela), as his game is about physicality more than intelligence.

For me he can cover anywhere in the 3 up top and can drift back but he is not a centre midfielder by any means

I would imagine they need a home grown player or two. If they dont get Barkley watch them go for Delph or someone!

I agree with this, although I would be happy with him coming in for a low fee now if his injury is not too bad. I see him primarily as Ali cover because I see his greatest strength as running with the ball and getting at defenders but I think that he could be adequate cover for any of the three behind Kane.

I think that Barkley makes sense if we sign him for a low enough fee that we can move him on for the same money or a profit in a year or two if it doesn't work out.

Where he fits in the pecking order probably depends on what Lamela is like when he comes back from injury, it has been a long lay off and sometime players never recapture their form after being out for so long.

On the radio last night they were talking about Alli and how we signed him as a holder but Poch quickly converted him to an attacking player. They were massively complimentary about that change and how Poch managed it

Very feasible that Poch could do something with Barkley

Did we sign Alli as a holder though? He had a very good goal scoring record for MK, at "worst" I think you could describe him as a box to box player when we signed him.

I think they may have been looking for an angle for the radio show?
