Transfer speculation

Yeah - just watch the cricket and the Lions tour and plug back into football in mid-August. It's much better for you.

Poch is the best coach I've ever seen operate. But I think he might be a bit suspect on transfers. In fact I don't think he's that bothered by them (preferring youth progressions), which is why he maybe needs a specialist he trusts to work alongside him.

I love the Lions but really have gone off Gatlands game plan as it's basically big men running hard.... how Mike Brown can't get in the squad I'll never know and also he has gone for his fa outed taffys despite them getting beat a few times in the 6 nations

Will add that Sam warburtons a big Spurs fan

Yeah -

Without knowing the current scouting setup it's hard to say!
I don't see the benefits of DOF, for me a good scouting and management setup would I hope cover all the areas required. I'd love the job of a DOF as it looks like a nice cushy number, a good transfer 'manager' should with a good department structure do nicely.

Haven't done overwhelmingly great in transfers.

Moussa Sissoko
Pau López
Georges-Kevin N'koudou
Vincent Janssen
Victor Wanyama
Heung-Min Son
Clinton N'Jie
Toby Alderweireld
Kieran Trippier
Kevin Wimmer
Dele Alli
Benjamin Stambouli
Federico Fazio
DeAndre Yedlin
Eric Dier
Ben Davies
Michael Vorm

Quite a mixed bag (bearing in mind Dier and Alli were likely the work of Pleat and co, as they were before Paul Mitchell and his team started)

I'd rather get a new DoF and scouting team in before we spunk £40m on an average highlights reel showpony.

I think that would be true of almost all clubs. I would also say there is additional danger in shopping in the 15mil price bracket.
Id actually say that list is pretty impressive

I wuold rate that list as follows:

Moussa Sissoko - Poor. At half his price you could argue he made sense to sign as a squad player covering several positions
Pau López - Jury still out but he is a promising young keeper
Georges-Kevin N'koudou - Jury is still out, but he clearly has skill and pace
Vincent Janssen - Jury still out but it looks like he is equipped to be successful in the Premier League
Victor Wanyama - Brilliant. One of the signings of the season in the P
Heung-Min Son - A very good signing who can play across all attacking positions.
Clinton N'Jie - Poor
Toby Alderweireld - Brilliant
Kieran Trippier - Good. Fantastic attacking right back who allows us to play in the same way when our first choice is out
Kevin Wimmer - OK. An OK back-up. Probably not quite good enough for us, but I expect we’ll make a transfer profit on him
Dele Alli - Brilliant
Benjamin Stambouli - Poor (although he wasn’t expensive, hardly got a game and I think we ended up making a transfer profit on him?)
Federico Fazio - OK
DeAndre Yedlin - Poor (although that is perhaps harsh as he was cheap, hardly got a game and I think we ended uwith a transfer profit?
Eric Dier - Brilliant signing.
Ben Davies - Good. Although he is a different type of player to Rose and I would prefer to see another wing back type option in the squad
Michael Vorm - Good signing. An excellent back up keeper to Lloris.

So out of 17 signings Poch has made 4 brilliant signings, 1 very good one, 3 good ones, with the still being out on 2 or 3 signings who could go either way. Of the rest I think only 4 could be truly classed as poor and two of those seemed to be cheap stop-gap squad/opportunity signings that we probably made a transfer profit on.

If we assume that we are likely to sign 4 players for the first team squad every Summer then I think achieving an average of 1 brilliant, 1 good, 1 not yet sure/OK and 1 poor would be about the best that any club could hope for. Especially when shopping on ebay as opposed to at Harrords. I think the fact that Sissoko was expensive and hasn't been worth the money has skewed opinions a little. Although I think I can see why Pochettino might've wanted Sissoko as a direct type of player who could carry the ball to help us relieve pressure in games where we are under the cosh and having to sit deep.... The problem (or perhaps the very opposite of a 'problem'?) is that we haven't really had any of those games this season as we have either been well on top, or been second best but not reverted to a defensive formation that plays on the break (as I think we probably should've done in the Liverpool and Emirates Marketing Project away games when clearly second best).

Well we all saw Zaha up close tonight.

Clearly he has pace, skills, desire, fight, a lot of good qualities.

He scared us and we had to get a couple or three players to face him up OR we fouled him.

But in terms of shots, assists, through balls, passes or dangerous crosses, I think he got a couple of good crosses across... as would any wide player e.g. Davies, Walker etc.

I dont mind him however I still think that for the money he'd cost we should be able to find better. I'm not a football scout nor have a networks of scouts working for me to I cant come up with up a list of names, though Carasco at Athletico doesnt play every week for them and I think is excellent (plus is Belgian!)

Excellent 1st half without any real end product, but anonymous in the 2nd half. Mind you Palace as an attacking force were non-existent in the 2nd half really.

You have to remember he is probably/possibly the first player opposition teams look to take out of the game when they are playing Palace - if he was with us then he'd potentially have less focus on him due to our other key players and be able to cause more damage

Carasco is class but they paid something like £25m for him and he is going up in value IMO

Or, alternately, he'd be even less effective because we usually come up against teams that deny us space and time in the final third, while Zaha had lots of time and space to run into once he got past his initial marker.

I'm not convinced by Zaha. He would be an enormously expensive signing, made on the basis of a transient season's worth of form and flashes of skill and talent over the rest of his career that have nonetheless been shadowed by indiscipline and a reputation for not being too decisive or clinical in moments where such qualities are needed.

Much like Sissoko. And if people still insist on crapping all over Sissoko for not living up to his 30m pricetag, I fail to see how the same thing wouldn't happen to Zaha were he to arrive.

What do you mean by shadowed by indiscipline?

IIRC, the Mail and the Telegraph (I think before last year's cup final) quoted anonymous United sources who described him as having a bad attitude, showing up late to training and reserve games at Salford (apparently he was 45 minutes late to one particular game) and generally not putting in much effort at all prior to being offloaded to Palace. Then Brede Hangeland called him the laziest player he'd ever met or something like that, which isn't encouraging either. Pardew also publicly described him as a player who apparently thought training 'revolved around him' - this came after his turnaround last season at Palace.

At the least, he's high-maintenance to a level that really makes me question whether spending 30-35 million pounds on him is going to be worth it. At worst, he's also indisciplined to a level that really impairs the likelihood of him succeeding at Spurs under Poch - maybe he would have thrived under Harry, but an indisciplined player needing an arm around the shoulder all the time wouldn't really find the going at Spurs to his taste in any way.

I watched him closely last night and i still think he is nothing special, he does a lot of step overs which never really produce anything ( a bit like Townsend did here), if he was cheap he may be worth a gamble on but for what he will probably cost i really do not see it. However we will see.

Pretty much this. His is quite powerful (although does like to fall over:)) and certainly can cause worry to the opposition but it still niggles me that he could be a frustrating player? And (like Townsend) it will probably because his decision making will be poor and will have spells where he is just playing for himself, and the one thing we are is a team.

Plus i know it shouldn't matter BUT withthe budget constraints we have, if he cost £30/40M and then looks as good as £30M Sissoko......thats a lot of dough on a lot of nothing.

If we got him to replace Sissoko at no cost then ok because he is home grown
I can see how Poch could make him effective, but I'm not impressed by him.
