Hugo Lloris

Hugo was not great yesterday but as we all know he has been a great asset to Spurs.

But he's not indescribable from the goalkeeping standpoint but is from the experience he brings to the squad!

Schmeichel Sr was an absolute beast; Hugo is not in his class, but I'm pretty certain he has earned us plenty points with some insane reaction saves. I'm sure someone somewhere must have stats of some kind for that. He's got weaknesses, and was nowhere near his best yesterday, but overall he's a major asset to us and the best keeper IMO we've had since Thorstvedt.
You could take the xG of all the shots on target against us and compare it to goals conceded to get a rough Hugo factor.

It would ignore the effect of pressure from defenders but it would be a decent proxy.

I remember the one against Monaco in the CL, and against City a couple of seasons back. Other than that I am struggling.

I just googled it out of curiosity. In his career he has saved 9 penalties, 5 of which were with us. He has a total of 55 unsaved penalties (16 with us).
Are you sure that's not including West Ham and Palace where it wasn't on target? I can only remember City Monaco and Fulham

Said it before ( and upset some), he is a very good keeper but never understood the world class handle he gets from some.

The first one - its clear where the chel$ea players are massed in the wall, and to get the ball up and down on the near post meant he should have had that side covered for an easy catch. But on a day like today, everything they struck hit the net, and had Hugo covered the logical side, Willian would have popped it into the other corner. It wasn't a massive fuk up by Hugo, but he should have covered and saved it.
Yup, just those couple of little steps to his right gave Willian a big target to hit and with his weight on the right foot Lloris had no chance to recover...

If anything I would blame the wall for the first goal. Did of if them at that end jump?

Perhaps if Alderweireld and Eriksen had leapt as high as Vertonghen and Dele they might've blocked the shot...

Yes, there were other shaky moments but I was referring to his involvement that led to goals really.

@DubaiSpur I don't really recall his chance to punch but happy to be corrected.

When the ball was flying over at roughly head height before falling to Walker just a metre or so in front of Lloris, who skewed his kick straight to Hazard on the edge of the area. Alli tries to close him down but gets (cannily) blocked off by Matic, and Hazard pings one into the far corner while Lloris watches helplessly.

I felt he could have been assertive and gone out to Walker, punching the ball away. It wasn't at a difficult height, there weren't any challenging players directly beside Walker, and none of that would have happened if the clearance had a bit more power and direction to it. But he didn't.

that wall was set to make the taker aim to Hugo's left, correct starting position gave him a great chance to save it

then he second guessed himself and took a step to the right

Very much agree. Someone posted on the preivous page that he doesn't save much considering how many shots he faces. Granted he doesn't have anywhere near as much to do as someone like Ben Foster for example but how many times has he made 7 or 8 world class saves to get his team a point against us? Even when we beat WBA 4-0 it would have 10-0 if not for Foster. I can't remember any games where Lloris has made save after save.

He's one of the best keepers in the league but he makes too high profile mistakes to be considered the best in my opinion.

You have to guess that Foster has to make more saves than Lloris because West Brom are nowhere near as good as we are. And Lloris, like all players, makes mistakes. But more often than not he is capable of amazing saves.

I think it fair to say there he does make some high profile mistakes that will preclude him from being put in the very top bracket, but to say you cannot remember games where he made save after save??

Have you forgotten our defeat at Liverpool this season not to mention one of those games when his howlers partially cost us: the 2-2 draw vs Emirates Marketing Project, do you not remember how lucky we were to come out of that game with anything? We have improved as a defence overall under Poch esp since Alderweireld joined us, but i'm sure if we think back to Poch's first season when we took a fair few drubbings i'm sure we'd find a few when Lloris kept the drubbings from being even more embarrassing than they were

What about when he handled outside the area and worse still when he panicked, came out and hazard nearly went around him? Comedy capers. I don't know whether it was this or another thread, but I said a couple of weeks ago that Lloris will never be top drawer due to his mentality issue. This game was another in a long line of clutch matches where he has bottled it.

I was very, very disappointed with him TBH.

Several of our players made some basic mistakes which cost us goals.

Toby conceded the free kick somewhat unnecessarily - there were covering players around - no need to dive in.
Hugo - poor positioning for the FK, handling outside the box and then rushing out and losing the ball against Hazard.
Son - naïve in the extreme to concede the pen.

I don't know if its a mentality issue, too much emotion at the start of the game or what but we clearly have these glitches in us and we need to be a lot smarter. The game in January at WHL was a perfect performance from that perspective. It is something that has been lacking in our big game performances over the stretch.

When did you ever see Clements or Banks make errors like Lloris did on Saturday? Now they were world class
Was a huge admirer of Clemence but he did make errors. Did not see him all that much when he was at Liverpoo but he had his share of clangers when he was with us, eg failing to hold long range shots. One season in particular he was relatively poor, so much so he himself publicly admitted he had allowed his standards to drop and made a point of putting in extra work during the close season to get himself back up to his previous level. The following season he was absolutely outstanding all the way through.

As for Banks, I assume you are going on reputation alone because in those days there was no live tv most games. But I'd lay money he made his share of mistakes because all goalies do. It's the blinding saves that get hyped so much that clouds objective judgement imo. Saying that I don't question for one moment that Banks was an outstanding keeper in his day.
