O/T The England Thread

If everyone was fit I would play this midfield

==============Hudd==========Wheelchair===============
====================Rooney=======================
========Lennon======Sturridge==========Young========

There's enough technique and intelligence in that Midfield 3 to dominate possession and enough tenacity to win the ball back. Sturridge, Young, Lennon and Rooney can all interchange positions. However the goals from this team will mostly be dependant on sturridge and young.

I was thinking about this earlier. Think I'd go for a 4-3-3 with the front 3 being Young, Rooney and Sturridge interchanging. It was the midfield 3 that I was concerned about; I'd guess it would be something like Parker, Gerrard and Barry, but that just doesn't excite me at all. Not a fan of Barry, and Gerrard's going downhill I reckon, and he's the only one there with any creativity to him. Was really struggling to think of another English CAM who's impressed this season.

Would have to be the **** Wheelchair going forward. Parker, Wheelchair with gerrard just in front with more licence to roam.

Have to agree he's another SWP for me, plenty of promise but no real end product.

I've not watched enough of Emirates Marketing Project's games to be sure of my opinion on him, but I can say that whenever I do watch matches or highlights of City, Johnson looks dangerous and has a good end product. Perhaps he shoudln't be starting for England, but I do think he'd be a useful weapon from the bench at least.

Same goes for Sturridge and Young; every time I see them play they look dangerous.

In general, I'm not saying that the quartet I proposed is world-class; I guess it's just relatively exciting* to have some new, younger, pacey attacking options. And in particular I liked that quartet because they're all versatile in terms of the different attacking positions they can play, and I think it would allow us to play really fluidly going forward (which I personally am a big fan of).

*In comparison to the likes of Milner, Barry, Lampard, Downing, even Gerrard etc.

Bentley looked good on highlights as well.

I have never seen Johnson have a properly good game, as in threatening throughout 90 minutes. He generally does the same over and over again, just cuts inside and fires decent shots from difficult angles. Not in any way a team player, doesn't do his job defensively. He is good at one thing, skipping past a man and firing a shot. He is not particularly young anymore either. I think Walcott is better than him.

Ashley Young is clearly better, offers a lot more and is more of a team player. As well at being better than Johnson at the one thing Johnson does well.

None of those have got raw aggression - they're a right bunch of pansies.

I think you may have gone a bit 'Bulldog spirit' here... England have been 'aggressively battling' for years and it got them nowhere - whilst other teams employed subtlety, skill, deft touch and good old fashioned diving to win games against us

Wheelchair certainly has that raw aggression. The others perhaps not, but they're all forwards or wingers so it's less important. The aggressive side can come from the likes of Phil Jones and Scott Parker. We don't need every player to be fast, strong, skilful and aggressive, but we can't have any of those attributes lacking from the overall side. At the last World Cup there was a remarkable lack of pace in the side and we got raped by a young, fitter, hungrier German team.

Johnson is pretty awful. MOTD highlights player for sure but he brings much misery to Emirates Marketing Project fans, but many don't see it as they reckon he doesn't get enough game time. He has had plenty of opportunities to impress but is pretty toss. To be fair if he played for us in a 4-4-2 it could work but in City's system he's frustrating as fudge. He has a face like a crow as well.

I reckon attacking wise a combination that has only been tried once could work, Rooney with Defoe in front of him. Defoe scored a hatrick that game.

I'd say

----------Defoe---------
------Rooney-----------
Young-----------Milner
----Parker--Wheelchair--

Cole LB, Richards at RB, Cahill and Lescott centre back.

You could say with Defoe up front alone he'll get bullied but I reckon with his, rooney's and young's movement and Milner's mental work-rate there'll be enough to pull opposition players out of position.

I guess you could argue a case for Welbeck starting though because there's potential for there to be a partnership for a long time with those but he's just not the finished article yet....Getting much better though...

Just no fudgeng Lampard or Gerrard for fudge's sake.

England - realising potential since 1872!

Doesn't happen - let me sum it up in caps Matt Le Tissier 8, Carlton Palmer 18

For me the front four would have to be:

------------------Welbeck------------------

A.Young---------Rooney-----------Lennon

Rooney just doesn't cut it for me as a lone forward, his passing and timing of runs into the box is too good to waste as a number nine. This front four has pace, power, trickery and is also great for closing down the opposition's defence/midfield. Lennon and Young are good defensively for wingers also, which means that they would be more than happy to let the likes of Walker/Richards and Ashley Cole overlap and for them to help track back in their place on occasion. Welbeck isn't the most potent forward, but he works well with Rooney, has good off the ball movement and is more than willing to put pressure on the two centre-backs.

Alternatively, Defoe would fill the same role should he come on - and with the personnel on the field we could move to a standard 4-4-2 with Rooney beside him. Those two have worked well as a partnership for England, IMO. Stirridge is a good player, but he's also rather selfish - and the likes of Welbeck will need supply rather than consecutive solo runs from him.

The other bonus of this front four is that three of them play together at club level, which means that they have a better understanding regarding each other's movement. On the other side, it would be advantageous to have Walker at right back, due to his time with Lennon at club level for Spurs.

I agree with all of that. Would also be a good counter attacking side and England should be able to put out a good solid back line and central midfield, Hart is a top goalie as well.

England have not had any exciting players for years. Look at Brazil with the greats of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, even Robinho was creative. They now have Damiao, and danny alves, kaka etc

Argentina with Messi (albeit he has not done great at international level) Batistuta, Crespo,

France, Zidane, Henry, Pires, Ginola (again international level not great but not his fault)

Loads more like Spain - Villa, iniesta, xavi, Holland with VDV and Sjneider.

England have had no one exciting at all really, Rooney maybe? But the last exciting creative player I reckon was Gazza in Italian 90.

You cannot say Young is anywhere near Gazza he's just quick and relies on pace and a few tricks but that's it.

Johnson is a one trick pony, and well overrated.

Rooney doesn't do it at International level anymore.
Basically England are boring as fcuk to watch now and have been since 1998 after the world cup IMO

Andy Cole - 15
Les Ferdinand - 17

Truly shocking stats

Its all about the new blood this year for me, the Golden Generation can GTFO. Rather fail with some fresh players than capitulate with the likes of Terry/Lampard/Ferdinand/Barry/Gerrard again.

Depends what you mean by exciting creative really. I don't think I'd have called Batistuta or Crespo particularly creative players. Clinical all rounders maybe, but hardly the types to create goals out of nothing, at least no more so than the likes of Shearer or Sheringham who played in the same era.

For what it's worth, I'd say Beckham, Scholes, Owen, (Joe) Cole, Lampard, Gerrard and McManaman were also all exciting players, though the former two never performed at international level.

I'd actually be happy to see every one of them put out to pasture bar Gerrard.

True but I'd say those guys were 1998 ie scholes and Beckham but still they weren't creative.

Yes crespo and batistuta same era as shearer and sharing ham and strikers so I'd say not creative. But basically I don't think England have had anyone that can beat a player with pure skill ala kaka, Robinho, iniesta, xavi, ronaldo (Portugal) , for years
