Serious relegation fears

it's not a point to the argument being made (as I have no idea what that is ;-)) but I think its interesting that Fergie would have an idea of line up's months in advance, i've seen multiple United players comment that in their early years they would get the heads up of which games they would be involved in weeks (and sometime's months) in advance

This
Screw thinking ahead, the next game is what is important win that and then think about the next one, its what the best teams do.

I'm confused as to what point you were originally trying to make then

And from my original post others turned it into "he changes his team" "Fergie pulled out of the FA Cup" etc etc which is completely screwing what I said.

Could it be that each player had a bespoke fitness plan? I.E. player x is coming into peak fitness so I must play him the next 3 games, after that I'll swap in player Y while X recovers?

I've simplified it a bit..

That's exactly what happens

It's actually quite basic level sports science. Players can't stay at optimum performance level - they go through cycles of peaks and drop-offs. The key to managing a squad is to have different players peaking at different times, so at any one time a core of your team are at their peak

The interesting case was Ramos, who got everyone's cycles in-sync, so every single player peaked for the LC final. But that was also a big factor in our following league collapse, as all the players were on drop-offs.

Of all your mesmorising theories this is the most laughable yet! Nothing to do with our players taking the foot off the gas, getting their cycles in sync:rolleyes: Honestly you are just on a wind up aren't you? Go on admit it please

We can rotate because we have a good squad of players. It'd be pretty easy to think of lineups right up to Arsenal at home, injuries permitting, a know-nothing like me can do it. Mostly it'd be 3 or 4 changes, bar the cup game against Palace where we could risk a few more:

Sun - PL - City (a):

Something like that, I'm sure Poch has lineups in mind for each game and he'll tweak them for injuries and form as necessary.

Absolutely love this logic. Spot on.

The concept of managing players' fitness throughout the season is something managers should be better at. Everyone needs a break now and then to recharge mentally or go through a mini preseason to improve fitness.

The Ramos part is of course gonad*s. The players simply couldn't be bothered once they'd secured that European spot.

Thanks. I think that Ferguson planned more than one game ahead and him rotating his players and fielding weakened teams is evidence of this.

Go and read the chapter in GCSE Sport Science about Peaking

We have played 25 games and amassed 48 points. That is 1.92 points per game. 1.92 points per game over the course of a 38 game season would total 72.96 points.

72 points is our record points total achieved in 2012/13, where we finished fifth to Arsenal on 73 points.

Take away our first four games and that ppg average is suddenly 2.14.

Lets go deeper down the rabbit hole.

We've played 25 games, there are 13 games left. If we took the last 13 games from our record season and transplanted them onto the end of this season we'd end up with 75 points.

If we take Jordinho's average for the last 21 games of 2.14 and mathematics it right into the rest of our season we'd have an extra 27.82 points and end up on 75.82 points.

With reference to a previous post my personal target for the team is to be on minimum 70pts on the morning of the last team. Since that post we have done exactly what was needed, we the two games we really had to. 22pts min from the next 12
My breakdown was.
Swansea,Bournemouth,WBA,Soton Home Wins Arsenal,United Home Draws 14
Villa Away Win 4pts from WHU/Stoke Away 1pt from either City,Liverpool or Chelsea 8pts

Any wins not got then points need to be picked in the harder matches. Any additional points on top are pure bonus

For me 70pts with our GD we get us a place in the Top4 as other teams would need 71. Meaning United would need 30pts from 13 games (way above their current average) and West Ham 32pts from 13 (not a chance).
Would be nice if we could go to SJP knowing knowing a Top 4 would be secured.

Any team sitting on 72 on the final morning will be in the mix for the title that afternoon.

All the above just means for me a defeat on Sunday would not be the end of the world, certainly as fat as the Top 4 goes at least. Depending on the other results it could however leave a title challenge a distant dream
