Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Didn't Liverpool famously win the league in the 70s or 80s with no English player in their team (though many were Scottish and Irish)?
I don't think it was every quite that bad.... In the 70s and 80s these are amongst the English players that Liverpool had:
Tommy Smith, Emlyn Hughes, Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, Phil Thompson, Terry McDermott, Phil Neal, Ray Kennedy, David Fairclough, Sammy Lee, Alan Kennedy, Craig Johnston, Gary Ablett, Paul Walsh, Steve McMahon, Barry Venison, John Barnes and Peter Beardsley.

I wonder if you are thinking of Liverpool's FA Cup win in 1986 when they became the first team in England to play an FA Cup final without a single English player. Steve McMahon was on the bench but did not come on. This was in the days when a team could only name 1 sub.

Yeah - that was it. Thanks

I think MP has 'his' players now. A squad who he feels comfortable himself working with. Maybe Fazio and Townsend are to be moved on. Fazio's wages and age mean he's probably better sold, but good back up. And we need to improve our fire power upfront with a signing who can compete for a first team place. So far Townsend is not that player. He needs to be playing week in and out before he can improve.

I do hope DL gives MP a new addition in Jan. But Son and then NJ back will effectively be our new signings. Another striker is a must tho imo.

stop gushing you guys, it is embarassing ;)

i think poch is still feeling his way around the EPL, the system and players. he is afterall quite an inexperienced coach compared to those helming the top 4 so i would give hims some forgiveness and leeway.

but he's got two seasons and the players he want as it seems; aside from all the feel good media stuff, he has got to deliver on an improvement versus last season. we have a lucky break with chelsea and liverpool falling away...so we must capitalize on it. things have changed... top 4 is within reach.

someone slap a troll badge on it already.

I really don't get it, you guys have something against me because I think there are better coaches than Poch,

El Poche has got the lads ticking just right ! The tweaks he has made has shown why Levy went for him in the first place. If he keeps this up, stays with us a few years, nay a decade or more - would he be Levy's ultimate wet dream ?? Get young very talented players in, make them true quality EPL and international players - club success, then sell them on ? Would be a great biz model.

I must admit, am jumping the gun a bit, the season ain't over yet, but it's looking very, very, very good atm.

I have no problem with you thinking there are better Coaches than Poch. but you apply double standards when you compare those coaches to Poch and rarely give Poch any credit. Which imo does not make you a particularly objective critic.

And would've been more were it not for an unlucky own goal on the opening day when our first choice keeper was out due to injury. In Poch we trust!

@Squawka
Spurs have now gone 12 Premier League games unbeaten, equalling their club record.

I've not felt this confident watching a Tottenham team in years, by which I mean I have fewer palpitations than I have done over the last few years. Full credit to Poch for getting this team playing is such a manner.

I think it's important to note the word 'fewer' here, for obvious reasons. :)

Does anybody else think we could compete for the title this season? We'd need luck with key players staying fit, but all teams need that. I honestly feel that we are a very good team and I don't feel as if any team has managed to out-play us this season. Even if we haven't got the result (like Utd in the first game) I have felt we were the better team overall in the match.

This isn't based on a good result today, just our general level so far this season when compared with all of the other teams. I think City and Arsenal are better than us, but we can certainly compete with them over the season. I don't really see a reason why we shouldn't be in the mix, other than the fact that we are Spurs and generally we find a way to phuck things up.
