Politics, politics, politics

Okay, time for some predictions. Labour minority government for me, with support from Welsh Nats, SDLP, Greens and SNP. No formal coalition agreement, just support on the floor of the house. Labour to get between 270 and 280 seats.

I think Labour minority or Labour coalition with both Lib Dem and SNP support. That will create enough balance to push some things through without being held completely to ransom by the SNP or labour rebels.

The Tories will need a lot of seats for anyone to work with them apart from UKIP. The lib dems still will, but without full party support.

I can't see the greens getting enough seats to matter.

That's what I expect.

I'm fairly sure the Conservatives will get the most seats but with this silly little student protest of left-leaning mentals it's virtually impossible for a Con/Lib/UKIP coalition to put together enough seats for a majority.

Although the tories would benefit my family greatly i just cannot get het up about them getting kicked out, Cameron is just going through the motions. If i was in a lab/tory marginal i would vote labour and just pray they do not need snp support. A majority labour government held to avowed spending restraint is about as good an outcome as is possible now.

A Labour majority is very unlikely - even more so than a Conservative one. They would have to absolutely smash the SNP in Scotland and the polls would have to be way out for that.

Unless the Conservatives somehow win all the marginals in England it's going to be a Labour/SNP/Green/all the other communists coalition. They may not call it that, but that's what it will be.

I wonder if we might see a bit of a break up of the big two over the next 5 years, with a few "one issue" parties breaking off ( much like UKIP)

I agree it is unlikely but the tories getting back to power seems impossible from where i sit. But yes i would be content with a tory majority but they really should have changed leader.
Five years of Labour propped up by the snp is a grim prospect.

So, let me check I have got this right - if the Tories get more seats than labour ( let's say 3 more, but no majority) then they could choose to take power as a minority - but would essentially be a dead duck of a parliament as they would rarely get enough votes to get any bill through

That's pretty much it. The SNP are almost certain to have enough seats to block any government they choose - mainly because the spit between Lab/Con is so even. One of them would need around 25-30 (IIRC) extra seats to be able to form a coalition with the Lib Dems and ignore the Tenants Super Party.

"Every single Labour Government we have ever had – from Ramsay MacDonald to Gordon Brown – has ruined the economy. Every single time. There’s a pattern. Labour wrecks the economy. The Tories repair it but become unpopular in doing so. Labour are re‑elected and wreck it again. It’s time to break that pattern."

"I know Labour. I grew up with them. I admire their virtues. But Labour is a class-based Party. It was born so and remains so. It’s in its DNA. Labour divides to rule. To win votes, they will turn rich against poor. North against South. Worker against boss. They have done this before. And they are doing it now. But it is emphatically not what this country needs. We need to bring people together, not create chasms to prise us apart."

John Major today... a little bit of sense there I think..

Yeah the Tories have such a rich history of 'bringing people together.' Maggie Thatcher anyone? You think Ramsey MacDonald created the great Depression too? Deluded, my friend, totally deluded.

Murdoch would have to be one of the most evil pricks in western society. Pure scum that man. After phone hacking, I don't know how he has the audacity to open his dingdong holster and speak as much puerile vile crap as he does.

You may haggle over the the history of 'bringing people together', however he makes a bloody sound point about Labour always crashing the economy and leaving it for others to clear up their mess
