Ryan Mason

Captain? Crazy talk :)

As for people saying he's young... is he?! He's 23, it's not that young. How many players in the past 10 years have come out at 23, 24 and turned out to be amazing?

We'll see, but honestly, I will be gobsmacked if he's with us by 2016!

People should watch the past 30 mins of man u and see how many times he gave the ball away. I think he gives th ball away so so much in pretty much every game.

Against United I think you're right. Success rate of 56% is pretty bad. However that's a pretty solid outlier compared to his overall completion rate of 81% this season.

Mason tries more speculative passes, hence the lower pass completion, which is exactly what the likes of Dembele and Bentaleb get lambasted for not doing. Mason has dropped off the past few games and Utd wasn't his greatest performance but he brings energy and fight as well as being comfortable moving the ball forward, that's why he's in the team. This team had so little heart before the likes of Bentaleb, Mason and Kane got into the side, we've done well since then but some still moan.

He is tottenham through and through and has been excellent overall. Seems to Have tired out a bit but even against burnley he was one of our best players before injury.

He didn't have a good game against United but still brought more to the table than others and the desire he showed to get onto that chance late on should mean he starts above other midfielders we have.

Great player and the moment he has a little fade I see people jump on him. Out of order

I didn't rate him from the off :) He's just getting found out for me. He offers nothing barring energy and being a bit tidy, but he isn't even that tidy. And speculative passes? Really? Can't remember him trying many.

56% is shockingly low though. Surely not many midfielders have that level. I thought in the 70s would be pretty average.

I'd rather Mason in there playing forward passes, using his tenacity, fight, work rate and energy then say a Dembele or a Paulinho who don't particularly care about the club pulling off a 98% pass completion, which are mostly sideways.

Mason is fine. He makes my pants sticky. Like someone said, you realise we miss him when he's not playing. Like a Carrick or a Modric and how important they were.

I mean even up to when Modric left you had fans saying he didn't do much anyway

Hmmm is GrimsbyYid your username on here Etienne?

I think the game against Man Utd was probably Mason's worst game since he has been in the team and I would imagine it is certainly his worst in terms of pass completion. However even in his worst game for us he won us more of the ball than any other player, did you also notice that it was him making a lung bursting run to get forward and give Kane an option late in the game? I would love us to have a better version of Mason in our first team, but we simply do not have one at the club currently so until we do, Mason plays and when he does play the team has much better balance and purpose.

It was his worse game and probably because he was so tired but the players we could rotate him with I guess Poch does not rate. I am sure he only missed that chance at the end because of how far he had run and that made him lack some composure.

The kid is doing fine, do not want to get into anything her but it is obvious when certain posters have an issue with an individual we have seen it a thousand times over the years, I was a bit like it myself with Rebrov.

Not that I particularly care who our players support, but Isn't he a Chelsea fan?

I don't think he is a bad player, but I also fail to see why people excited about him. Agree that he is better than Paulinho and Dembele, him and Bentaleb are the best we have at the moment.

No one's excited about him. We are just rating a player who is bringing something to us that we haven't had since Modric left. Their is nothing exciting about those players, they get on with their jobs and make the team tick. The Eriksens and the Kanes are the ones we get excited about, the match winners.

I think that you answer the question in the first sentence of your post in the second sentence.

I think one of the main things our team benefits from with Mason is not only the fact he has good vision in being able to make the pitch big by using the flanks, but more his willingness to run beyond the man in possession. He really drives. I have been a big fan of Dembele but there was a moment which summed up the difference between Dembele and Mason against Man Utd. When Kane intercepted on the halfway line and drove towards the United goal.

Mason and Dembele both sprinted to offer support. Dembele stopped short of the edge of the box. Mason drove beyond Kane and into the box, Kane found him and he blazed it over unfortunately. But that willingness to run beyond the man with the ball is so key for me. We have missed it for some time, and particularly this type of player was lacking since AVB's last season with us.

I think Lennon used to and still does make runs off the ball. He often isn't found. Townsend often just wants the ball to feet. In fact so many of our players want the ball to feet, do something and then move it on. Bentaleb and Mason have come in and stopped complicating things. They have a lot to learn of course. But their simplicity on the ball, their work ethic and their willingness to work for the greater team ethos is what endear them to the crowd. Well imo at least anyway

I honestly am struggling to remember the last time we had a central midfielder that did this.
Modric, Parker, Huddlestone, Livermore, Sandro, Palacios, Zokora, Carrick, Jenas? None of them did it.

i would love to see mason played a little further forward in a midfield 3 with dembele and bentaleb simply because he loves going forward. hes very creative and makes intelligent runs

Sick one suggested this elsewhere

...................................................... Stambouli......

....................mason.........................eriksen ........................Dembele

.........................Chadli/lamella/Lennon/Townsend/Kane (any of these )

.......................................................Kane/Soldado

I don't think that you are going to see Dembele at the base of midfield too many times under Poch. His slowness on the ball is really detrimental to Poch's preferred way of playing.

Is it wrong of me to say mason getting injured was a blessing in disguise? Dembele was immense! (Ps you were saying milo :) )

I think Dembele did well today and there may be a call to have a more defensive, physical player against certain teams. But with how good Bentaleb is starting to play as the holding player, for most teams we face, Mason will be a better partner for him to get us on the front foot when in possession.
