Again, don't know if Carrick is the type of hard-pressing player Poch tends to prefer in that deep-lying midfield role that he plays. Ergo, Fletcher. Agree with the reasoning though: I assume a deal similar to Holtby's could be pulled off.

Possibly. Plus he'd ask for relatively high wages that would cause Levy more than a few involuntary spasms, so there's that to consider.
To me its more the type of player that Carrick himself. The offer logic was simply made more sense now, vs. next season (by then Mason/bentaleb might not need mentoring as much)
And by type = senior midfielder that can show how not to panic, has won stuff and can teach Bentaleb/Mason/Carroll/etc.

I disagree that it's a foregone conclusion that we're not getting him. Not looking very likely, I agree. And us agreeing a fee with Southampton will be difficult, but I'm not giving up hope.
True about Carrick and hard pressing. But he's excellent at reading the game and positioning himself right. Might work well with a lot of other players doing a lot of running around him and with him sitting most of the time.
Fletcher at his best was very good. Not convinced he'll ever reach those levels again and I thought he had ongoing fitness concerns...

I still think we might be in with a shout. Southampton have struggled lately, but they've at least gotten themselves into a secure position this season. Might make them more likely to sell in January whilst they were worried of a complete collapse this summer?
Would be a fantastic January signing if we could swing it.

It's just as much about the principle as it is the player with me. If we get Poch's #1 target then it shows him we're all in with him and it promotes trust from both sides. Not saying we should pay whatever it takes but if we have to go a little over what we "value" him at then I think it's worth it. That said I'm very happy with Mason and Bentaleb, obviously we can't rely on just those two but I wouldn't like to see one of them fall by the wayside, I think AMR/RW and CF are the main issues at the moment.

I really don't think Mason or Bentaleb will fall by the wayside just because we sign one more properly good midfielder. I actually think it could be helpful as there would be a bit less pressure on those two to perform every week.

Perhaps Stambouli over Dembele. Although Dembele's advantage is of course that he's fairly versatile and can play in several of the more attacking positions.
With two young and inexperienced players in Mason and Bentaleb. One player new to the team in Schneiderlin. One player still in his first season in the league in Stambouli and one player well out of form in Dembele I think having 5 players for those 2 positions would be fine for this season at least. Particularly as if we progress in the FA-cup and EL we'll have an absolutely packed fixture list. Both Mason and Dembele are decent options for more attacking roles actually so with that versatility I think we'd be fine.

They will definitely be interested in Dembele or Townsend (or both) imo which is something maybe Arsenal can't offer them. It would surely suit them to get a player of quality in as well as money.

Stambouli is definitely ahead of Dembele in the pecking order now.
Poch has mainly been using Dembele as an AM recently, as he seems to do less harm further up the field

Schneiderlin for Dembele +15 mil; and for those saying it is too much, do you believe Soton will sell him for less than 30 mill?
He's not worth 30M, not worth 20M in my opinion ... and Southampton's real form now is not helping his price any.
As a player he could easily be at a similar/lower level to Southampton in 3 years wondering what the **** happened to his big chance ..
