Why do you assume Benitez's tenure would necessarily be shorter than FDB or Pochettino. He's "middle aged" at most for a manager. If Pochettino leaves Southampton for us after 18 months, you'd have to be a special kind of mong to expect him to show any loyaty to this club. If he does well, vultures will circle; if he's crap, its P45 time for him and his translator. Either way, I see absolutely nothing to suggest he represents better value than Benitez as a long term appointment.

In fact I would, and have, argued the contrary.

Its based on my 'hunch' more than anything else. I have this vision of Benny as being an instant impact Manager as opposed to one that would build an infrastructure etc - based on his experienced and what I have seen of him - nothing else. You can argue that Baldini's responsibility is building the infrastucture and implementing youth development strategy etc but thats something im not privy to.

Its all assumptions but most of this board is based on assumptions because the majority dont really know (me included)

The Dutchman was hand-picked by the Glazers to succeed David Moyes at Old Trafford and was first aware of the possibility three months ago, well before the Scot's sacking

Louis van Gaal was aware of the possibility of becoming Manchester United's new manager as early as February, Goal can reveal.

United confirmed on Monday that the Netherlands coach will take over at Old Trafford after the World Cup on a three-year contract.

Sources have told Goal that the 62-year-old was sounded out about the United job in February and advised to wait until the end of the season before making a decision on his future.

At the time, he had already held three meetings with Tottenham representatives and the Londoners were keen to appoint him as their next manager to replace Tim Sherwood at the end of the season but Van Gaal decided to play the waiting game in the hope that the United job became available - a decision that paid dividends following the sacking of David Moyes from the Old Trafford hotseat in April.

And the news shows just how long United executives had been mindful of Moyes's possible departure, with the Scot sacked just nine months after replacing Sir Alex Ferguson.

United moved swiftly to formally initiate contact with Van Gaal following Moyes's dismissal and arranged talks to tie up the deal.

His availability this summer, with no compensation to be paid, always made the Dutchman favourite over other managers under consideration including Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti, who all ruled themselves out of contention.

Van Gaal is believed to have been a hand-picked appointment from the Glazer family, United's owners, who wanted a proven winner after a disastrous season under Moyes in which the club finished seventh in the table with their lowest ever Premier League points total.

Some senior figures at the club were concerned by Van Gaal's abrasive style but the Glazers were convinced that a firm hand was needed to steady the ship, particularly as they plan to spend around £150 million on a huge summer overhaul of the squad.

Van Gaal was also the subject of interest from abroad, most notably in Russia, but had made no secret of his desire to manage in the Premier League, having previously won titles in Holland, Germany and Spain.

As he hesitated over the Spurs job, the Londoners became increasingly convinced that he was set for United. He eventually told Tottenham chiefs that he was no longer interested in taking over at White Hart Lane, paving the way for his move to Old Trafford.

Van Gaal agreed to take over from Moyes almost two weeks ago after a meeting with a United delegation in his villa in the Algarve.

The delay in confirming Van Gaal's appointment is believed to have been partly due to extended negotiations over the makeup of the backroom team who will work under the former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Ajax coach but the wait was finally ended on Monday, alongside confirmation that Ryan Giggs will remain at the club in the role of assistant manager.

I am surprised at the number of people fooled by one bad season for Manchester United. I can fully accept a player or manager opting for them ahead of us.

Are you going to be just as shocked when Liverpool beat us to transfer targets?

Fair enough. I think that I'd venture as far to say that any hope of long term appointments is probably futile. I think the managers who stuck around belong to yesteryear and if you get 2-4 seasons of decent service out of a manager then you've had good value and it was a good appointment. Managers either move onto to shinier surroundings or get their marching orders. If a club manages to appoint a manager who really does hang around for a decade then that was probably 99% luck and definitely the exception rather than the rule.

I can only think of a clutch of managers who have given the length of service to a club that many on this board desire (for understandable reasons). I think that isn't a reality, and should largely be ignored as a criteria when appointing a manager.

Succession planning. If only we had ****in done that if you get Benny Hill you need some kind of continuity with an AM who would stay. You get FDB and Poch then maybe not so much.

It doesn't tend to work though. 99% of managers get sacked after a period of poor performance. The background team are usually too tainted by their involvement with that. Occasionally popular characters can survive it (Hughton, Jol, Freund), but generally it is terminal. If it goes tits up for LVG, Giggs will more likely go out the door than he will succeed him.

Succession planning has only really worked where a club has had a long period of dominance (Liverpool, Ajax, Barca).

Recruiting on philosophy like say Swansea have been doing is a better solution I think.

I think it does work but you need someone like Giggs. I think Manure have done that and have succeeded in bringing together a team that not only has instant impact with LVG but once he has two or three years Giggs, a club legend, will take over. Thats what I wanted with TS when rumours of LVG was prominent. I think we could have still done that with Benny and TS but we were too quick (im assuming) to just get rid. Unless of course TS wants to become a Manager which I think there will be a few jobs for him.

If it does go tits up I do still think that Giggs will take over. Only time will tell.

Giggs will not get fired if lvg ****s it up which he won't :(

I really want us to go Dutch now and see the teacher vs the able student
Next year could see the best premier league ever

Tim would not learn from anyone imo to opinionated to self righteous never wrong :(

I never for a second thought we were going to get LVG because I knew we wouldn't be the biggest club with a vacancy this summer.

People talk as though Benitez and FDB will come to us if we just click our fingers and wave a wad at them. I'm not so sure. I don't think Benitez will just walk out on Napoli after one season, not without having at least a crack at the CL with them. Also I'm not sure FDB is in any hurry to come here either. I think he wants bigger fish to fry too.

I think will we appoint Potchywashisname but not because it's a considered well thought out appointment. It will be because we can't attract bigger names.

However some people seem to think we have the same pulling power as Real Madrid.

i don't think it's a misguided opinion at all, we're one of the biggest available jobs this summer, for a variety of reasons

we will pay top level wages for the right man
based in London
play in the Premier League
have a young/valuable squad
world class training facilities

and most importantly there aren't many other 'top' jobs going.

FDB had been quick to talk about the roll pretty recently and all of a sudden kept schtum - that to me suggests THFC had been in touch saying that if he were interested then we don't appreciate him talking openly about the situation. If he wasn't interested he'd have most likely categorically stated so by now. Benitez, according to many people close to him (former captain and former assistant manager) have been talking him up for the job. i think both these coaches would jump at the chance to manage us this summer.

Hmmm...we already witnessed that with AvB Vs. Mourhinio and that ended well....? :-k

Agree with most of that except the first line - paying top level wages isnt Levy's way. Negotiating and haggling to get the best VFM, eventually losing out on both managerial and player targets is.

Unfortunately feel we are going to be stuck with whoever is left and who is prepared to get sacked after 12 months or so if we dont qualify for the CL.

Woy Hodgson anyone?

I'm pretty sure Redknapp and Ramos were amongst the highest paid managers in the world.

Well the Barca jobs come up for a start and Benitez's mates over here are bound to talk him up for a return. What are his mates in Spain and Italy saying?

Man Utd need a new manager so they appoint one ASAP. A good one. Spurs need a new manager so we'll probably fanny about for weeks probably well into pre season before we appoint the only bloke we could realistically get anyway.

It's the Spurs way.

Didn't Benitez have a crack at the CL with Napoli last season?

I thought Man Utd sacked their manager with 3 games of the season remaining? Currently we still have 2 or 3 weeks on Man Utd in terms of speed in getting a new manager appointed. Personally I am pleased that Levy isn't rushing into anything. If Benitez, FDB and Pochetino are the 3 top candidates (and assuming they would all take the gig if offered it on the right terms) then I think Levy (and Baldini) are absolutely right to take their time and try to do as much due diligence as possible try to ensure they appoint the one who is the best fit for the constraints that they will have him working under.
