Levy to move for Tuchel

Daniel Levy has switched his sights to Mainz 05 coach Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel, 40, became the Spurs supremo's number one choice last night after Spurs officials learnt from Louis van Gaal's advisors that the Dutchman has 'agreed in principle' to take over the Old Trafford hot seat following the World Cup.

Inside sources at White Hart Lane say that senior club officials have been attending Bundesliga fixtures to keep tabs on Tuchel's progress. Having picked up the mantle from the much heralded Juergen Klopp, Tuchel has turned unfancied Mainz into Bundesliga mainstays and has already attracted attention from German giants Schalke 04 and Hamburg.

An insider explained: "Levy and Baldini think Thomas Tuchel could be the ideal fit for Spurs. Having already brought players through from the youth team at Mainz they think he could maximise the exciting generation of talent coming through the ranks at Spurs and get the most out of the world class training facilities."

Tuchel, whose contract with Mainz expires in the Summer, has given his advisors the green light to begin negotiations with Levy as he feels he is ready for a bigger stage at this point in his career.

What you get with FDB is a system of play. Who knows how things would pan out with him in charge, or with anyone else for that matter, but Ajax as a club is a model we should aspire to. There are other considerations though...

Bergkamp was a Spurs-fan when he was a kid, remember! And it would hurt the goons more than us if he were to join our coaching staff, in my opinion.

Just start a thread saying we are talking to him on two message boards, the media will report it as truth, and Levy/Baldini will hear/read it.

Haha this is true. You need to make it sound ITK, yours Sisters, Friends, Gynaecologist etc.

I don't under-appreciate our squad at all - I think it's excellent. Don't think I've ever said otherwise, save for obvious problems at LB/CB that we all agree on.

As a matter of interest, who are the non-red flag coaches you're referring to?

Being honest, I don't follow a ton of "non Spurs" related football, especially outside of England, so don't have a FM list.

My thoughts would be ala any type of job role you would look to be filling, key attributes

- 5-10 years coaching experience, with most of that in a top tier league (i.e. not 2nd divisions in countries)
- Media savvy
- Shown ability to work with and improve existing squad players
- Trophy wins a definite bonus
- Ability to build a system though club from youth/academy/first team

Build a list from that, see who is interested, review their history, meet and see their vision, decide ..

Perfect :D

the only thing that makes me a little apprehensive about fdb is that i watched salzburg under the (then) non-fashionable roger schmidt absolutely play them off the park. schmidt has had moderate success with paderborn in germany, and now broken all kinds of records in austria. so why not him?

of course i'm being a bit awkward purposefully, the gravitas and respect de boer has throughout the game, the playing career behind him etc add to the attractiveness of the appointment. but it certainly wouldn't be without huge risks.

then again, dortmund appointed klopp after he had failed to get mainz promoted from the second division (admittedly he did superb work for years with the club before that) so maybe there is a lesson in there somewhere for us?

i've been waving the thomas tuchel flag for a while now, but i can't help but think he would be an incredibly astute and sly appointment. it would be a bit left field, and might just prove to be a stroke of genius. i think he has everything we need and are looking for.

if we're going big, then i'd have us throw everything into a bid for benitez. i think of managers we could possibly attract, none would be as close to guaranteeing (relative) success as rafa.

I remember when Wenger joined the ****.... That was left field and he hasn't turned out too bad for them

Don't understand the idea of bringing in Thomas Tuchel. What he's done at Mainz has been impressive enough certainly. He has taken a team that regularly yo-yo'd between the Bundesliga and the 2nd division and turned them into a solid mid-table Bundesliga side that regularly challenges for a Europa League spot.

Mainz fans love him of course. He's taken Ipswich and turned them into Villa. And that's an honestly impressive thing to have done. You can't knock it. And yeah, maybe it means he'd be able to take us up a level too. But it seems like a terrible risk to me. There's no evidence that he could replicate his success at Mainz elsewhere.

The argument would go something like this (at least coming from me):

Unless we get LvG we have two options:

1. Go for a manager that's not yet proven himself to be good enough. Someone like Rodgers when he left Swansea, Martinez when he left Wigan or Klopp when he left Mainz. Or now FdB at Ajax, Tuchel at Mainz or Pochettino at Southampton.

2. Go for a manager that's proven himself not to be good enough.

Because that's our options where we are. Those proven good enough go to bigger clubs, we have to go for the risky options.

Or stick with Sherwood who has proven to get results in a small amount of games but still has question marks over him

Not exactly a good reason to believe that something is true...

I think Sherwood was given the job with a pretty clear understanding, or at least intention from Levy, that he would have to do exceptionally well to keep his job past this season. Quite simply because the reasons he got the job in the first place was a very particular set of circumstances. Given a normal between seasons new manager decision Sherwood wouldn't have gotten the job. I don't think his results or performances have been exceptional.

Nothing that you say makes it clear that your original statement that "the new man has been agreed already" for Sherwood to be done. It's just a short list of some of the positives about Sherwood.

Did you read my previous post about Pochettino including the quotes from a few articles from when he took over at Southampton? He's done nothing to suggest that he's a better shout than Sherwood? Really? Nothing?

I read the quotes yes, and thank you for taking the time of posting them... And like I said already he does seem to have something about him, but he has done nothing at Southampton that suggests that he has them punching above their weight considering their investment, and what he has done in Spain is maybe comparable to pulis's job at place who have no right to stay in this league.... But they will because of him.

Place have amazing support by the way ... Very impressed.

i don't know much about Tuchel but wouldn't Moyes be a safer bet being proven in the EPL and pretty done the same with a mid table team on a budget?
