Jan Vertonghen

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

All these players who deserve so much better than little old Spurs...well, if they are that good, why can't they drag us into the Champions League? Vertonghen has made plenty of mistakes and looked f**king ordinary at times. Remember pulling down the Villa players shorts? Continually getting done by a lack of mobility and turning like an oil-tanker.

GHod forbid that Danny Rose or Kyle Naughton made the slip he did today, they'd be getting torn apart,

If you think you are too good for us Jan, then please f**k off. That goes for all of the other wet bags of p1ss that we have signed. Capoue, Chadli, Paulinho - - we may as well have kept Hudd, Carroll and Livermore. I don't care if a player is foreign, Bentaleb is foreign -- but I'd rather give time and support to lads that come through the system or get signed young and grow with the club.

If we're gonna be also-rans (and we are, without hundreds of millions of pounds, that's just the reality) then at least have a group of players and coaches that we can all get behind.

I am fast-reaching that conclusion, for this season anyway…it's not rational, it's emotional, but I'm a supporter like your good self thus that's how I am...

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Well, here goes with some spleen-venting frustration…

Jan Vertonghen. You, Sir, are a disgrace. For weeks now you've played with a massive ****ing great mooey on you, c unted others for not doing what you think they should be doing, put in half-arsed performances given the potential you have, started to try and engineer a move 'if we don't get into the CL' whilst not giving 100% to our efforts in trying to, and have generally played with the focus and attention of someone who does not give a s hit. A slip is one thing. A slip after another pathetically unnecessary 'Cryuff turn' and suicidal back-pass is quite another. Yes, players slip, but doing unnecessary turns in acres of space increases the chances of such things. Your focus has been lacking for a few games now. Your desire to fight for improvement both for us and yourself not evident. In fact, let me just be clear. I think you are a ****ing ****! Whilst you are on the pitch in our shirt, you will get my support simply because of that simple fact. But I don't like your ****ty attitude, I don't like your arrogance and I don't like the way you have already set a move away from us in motion whilst contributing directly to us not getting CL football.

Yes yes, i know it's a tad unreasonable, but so what? He can f uck off! I wouldn't rely on help from him when in trouble, that's for sure...

If he keeps playing like this, no one will take him. For his own sake, he needs to step his game up for the final bit of the season.

The Bale saga was a catharsis for me. The only players I would hate to see leave us would be Townsend, Carroll, Livermore, et al., i.e players who love the club as much as we do. Similarly, I would hate to see us sell them of our own accord as well, because I believe they deserve a place in the squad simply because of this fact. If pushed, I'd extend that love to Sandro, Lennon, Daws and Walker as well.

Anyone else can **** right off. I really couldn't care less at this point: if you look at us as just a paycheck, then it's up to you if you want to go.

However...if we're just a pay-check to you, please understand that you are just an on-pitch asset to us. We will give you as much loyalty as you would give us when deciding whether to stay or move on to greener pastures.

It seems simple enough, that calculation above. But fans and players routinely misinterpret it, and it does cause a lot of unnecessary pain.

Today, as on many days, we are reading from the same hymn sheet my friend. I'd add Bentaleb to that; I think the lad has it and I thought he worked damn hard today, as did Adebayor...

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Let's keep a sense of proportion eh? Agree JV's want-away attitude stinks but not sure we can legitimately use today's error as a stick to beat him with. Yes Verts can be faulted for attempting over-elaboration but the end of the day he just slipped, that can happen to anyone. He tried desperately to rescue the situation only to make it worse.

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Sadly as much as he his behaving like a spoilt child he is still a very good player. The Ade/AVB saga shows we cannot afford to just dispose of players. It's up to Tim to show he can be a good man manager and turn around Jan's attitude. A rocket up the **** and a game or 2 on the bench would be a start except we don't have any defensive cover at the moment.

In fairness to my slightly unreasonable ****ging of him, i have been ****ging him for a few weeks now and actually got my lather up more after the Norwich debacle!

Damn you and your common sense!!!!!!

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

What has Jan done? I think we're blowing up or using him as a spacegoat. He played well today bar the slip and did he play midweek for Belgium?

he's the obvious spacegoat...others are equally culpable...

in saying that cant disagree too much with Steff or Dubai...it looks quite clear that his attitude recently smells like the bog of eternal stench.

For moment there I thought I was reading the Ade thread. ;)

Touche!

Yes, pathetic stuff from me in one sense, but I am unable to show any rationality towards him right now. Most unfortunate.

How do you tell someone's attitude from a football pitch? Maybe its people readying themselves for the next exit. I didn't like her anyway.

Maybe just maybe we can extend his contract.

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Bitterly disappointed by Vertonghen's willful, cowardly performance Saturday. But not shocked.

He's in acres of space with plenty of time to pick out a target or just make the easy, early play and knock it forward down the wing. Up until then - outside the first 4-5 mins. - our game plan had worked well in stifling Chelsea. He has time to think and that's the decision he made, playing in Eto'o. That wasn't as accidental as it looked.

Well, if we truly want to make CL, he simply has to start every league game we play going forward. We'll drop like a stone in the table and miss Europadope football. Pull the same Europe-free deal we did in 09-10, and Liverpool are doing this year. Then, now matter how acrimonious it gets, we keep him for next year and make him suffer on the bench and play cup matches with the cloggers. Because, playing like this, Spurs simply won't have any bargaining power to extract a the sort of fee his skills should generate. He's cost us and now must suffer retribution.

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Hold up.

1. He is a Centre Back. He's playing out of his position for the team.

2. He did very very well bar the slip. He got forward far more than Naughton, is far far better attacking than Naughton, who is a fullback, and he created chances against a diligent defensive Chelsea team.

Not all of his runs came off, but he was up for it, didn't let his head drop, and kept trying to drive into them. The run where he got to the edge of the box and tried to chip the keeper was one of the better attacking moves today. Granted a number of runs he made with the ball didn't go anywhere, but that was the story of the day and happened with all of our attacking players.

3. Did he play on Wednesday for Belgium?

I'm not saying he can't do better. But ffs he's one of our better players and has done very little wrong to be hung out to dry.

Victim of his own character. Similar to Berbatov, he has a laid-back attitude that many portray as being disinterested. His character this season is no different to that of last season's, if you want emotion then take a look at his reaction each time we score a goal. It's true he may have one eye on a summer exit, but i'm pretty sure at the moment that is an accusation that can be leveled at pretty much all our top players considering the way events have panned out this season.

He's not performing anywhere near to the level that he can potentially play at, but for me along with Kompany, he is the best CB in the league, we should be doing all that is possible to keep him at the club next season.

Re: Super Jan Vertonghen Official

Not sure I'd sell him cos not sure we know how to spend it (if we spent it at all), but can hardly believe the love affair with Vertongen in here. I think its cos he has a bit of Hoddle in him, but can't think of much else. Reckon half the reason they try him at LB is cos they - different managers- are not quite sure he's even a CB. I know we need a LB, but still, its obvious to everyone and their uncle that he aint one. I'm wondering if its just a way to somehow get him on the park/team sheet. Honestly, Kaboul...at his best and injury free...is a better CB than super Jan is. Seriously, has anyone ever questioned Kaboul's attitude or claimed to know what he's thinking? Yep, Verts is a Tottenham player alright.

The whole reason he is played at left back is because out LB position is either Rose, who has been injured a ton this season, or Fryers, who is really young, raw and therefore inexperienced or Naughton who is terrible on the left.

That's a ****ing outrageous comment! Are you serious?

Are you really saying he slipped and fell on purpose and then weighted that ball to Eto'o?

Spot on imo, people's reactions here and in the ratings thread has been as if he played a total mare all night. He made one massive mistake, but other than that I haven't actually seen people point out a single mistake he made. And the only real difference between Vertonghen's mistake and some of the mistakes Dawson and Bentaleb (amongst others) made was that Vertonghen got punished for his. But because hating on Vertonghen in now in vogue the reactions are so over the top it's even being insinuated that he did it on purpose.

--------------------------------------------

And I know almost everyone's gut reaction when Sherwood was blaming the characters in the squad was to put Vertonghen up there as the main culprit, but one of the things Sherwood said was "There's a lack of character, too many of them are too nice to each other and you need to show a bit more guts." Does the "too nice to each other" part sound like Vertonghen or perhaps some of the "nice boys" in our squad?

In fairness to me, I have been on that wagon for a while now. I admit to being a tad harsh with regards to my post a few spaces above, but I stand by the sentiment that he packed in playing at 100% some time ago and that if he doesn't want to be here (is there a question?) on your bike mate! And no, he made two mistakes back-to-back, the first being to turn like that onto a simple pass (it was the turn which caused him to slip, just do the simple thing!) and then the horrific 'pass'…

As for the second boldface, absolutely not him at all, no…but I suspect he is one of the ones Sherwood feels he 'can't rely on'...
