Danny Rose

I'm bored so decided to re watch that event and break it down as best I can:

1) Spurs' Left hand side of the pitch: City counter and Spurs over commit before the ball is switched wide right to Dzeko who carries the ball into Spurs territory with Walker chasing back having been sucked in to cover Dawson vs Silva.
2) Dzeko cuts inside and tries a neat 1-2 which is cleared by Eriksen to City's left back, Dzeko drifts into channel between Rose and Chiriches.
3) City knock the ball around on their left wing before Silva plays a cute reverse pass (whilst dragging Eriksen out of position) to the on rushing Fernandinho. He is running at a square on Capoue. Bentaleb is marking Toure who is not involved.

THERE IS A MASSIVE SPACE NOW BETWEEN OUR TWO BANKS OF FOUR
Our back line is not organised
You could drive two busses side by side between Dawson and Chiriches

4) Fernandinho gets past Capoue who avoids making the foul. This however puts Fernandinho running into the space between our lines.
5) Dawson steps out to challenge Fernandinho. Walker stays in line but Chiriches runs back to goal aiming to cut out the pass between he and Dawson or the shot should Dawson be beaten.
6) Rose who before was somewhere between marking Navas and Dzeko now starts to run in support of Vlad, but he is too late. There is already too much ground to cover.
7) Vlad seems unaware of Dzeko's movement or assumes wrongly that Rose is on it.
8) Rose makes a great covering tackle but gets a red.

Things to consider:

It took 40 seconds for us to go from Rose crossing the ball into their box to Rose making that tackle. At the start of the counter Jovetic held the ball up well, yet despite us getting numbers around him he was still able to pick out an easy square ball to Toure, simply put we didn't close his options down and allowed the move to continue. Ade was on scene and could have done this but was half hearted and didn't even try to cut out the option.

Having cut out the 1-2 and cleared the ball we reverted to two banks of four with one extra. Capoue for me is at fault in this section as he and Walker seem to be marking the same man, standing goalside of Jovetic. Once Silva plays in Fernandinho, Capoue is ill positioned and ends up neither challenging nor fouling Fernandinho.

As noted earlier, Navas stays very wide throughout and as a result Rose is left unsure whether or not to tuck in or stay in a position which allows him to partially cover both Dzeko and Navas. He chooses the latter.

The communication between the defenders is questionable. Yes they were exposed terribly but the amount of space they leave between one another for players to run into is criminal. I can't help but wonder how things would've panned out if they had kept it narrow and dropped off a little bit before challenging. Likely Fernadinho wouldn't have been able to pass the ball through, and be forced to spray it wide to an open Navas. The issue for me comes from the midfield first and the defence second in this case.

You have said what I was trying to say in less words. I agree. The problem starts in midfield for sure; Bentaleb is clearly unsure of what's going on, and who can blame him when senior players allow others to stroll past them? The whole 'Walker covering Daws' issue has been seen often this season, our left-hand side was a shambles, but Rose should absolutely see how it's unfolding (if he's a class left-back) and drop back even a couple of yards so as he's not chasing Dzeko should Dzeko receive the ball, but is challenging with him. I agree with the space left. It's ridiculous, and continued to be so. Things are so very different when Sandro is there, but that's no excuse. I genuinely cannot figure out Daws anymore. He seems to play in areas where he is between the proverbial rock and a hard place (Roland?!!!!!!!)…

it starts with the space in front of the defence. walker does well to come in to help the defence from the righ. rose is poor positionally, shoud've been there ahead of dzeko to begin with.

when opposing teams stretch us, the CBs should be capable of going fast and far to close down the angle, but the wing back, or DM must be there to cover.

Glad the red card has been rescinded.

Time for Rose to step it up! He's first choice for the rest of the season at least and we need him to improve a bit...

Did someone call MC Grammar? (It's fewer words, by the way, not less). :)

I don't know what the answer is to our defensive issues. I agree that Daws gets in a lot of situations where he does not know whether to press or drop back, and I am also tired of seeing that move where the central striker moves diagonally between our centre backs on to a through ball to get in a shot.

Earlier in the season Rose and Walker seemed to be coming across the back line more often to save the day, but not so much lately. Both Walker and Rose are fast, so you'd think you'd see a few more of these "here comes the cavalry" situations.

=D>

I am thrilled by your correction…seriously, I said to the wife last night that a correction from you would be an honour. ;)

He's not good enough, our biggest mistake of the window is not getting at least an option there

He needs to calm down in the defensive third of the pitch. There is no need for him to try and put himself about. He keeps giving away free kicks in dangerous area with his body checking. When he gets forward he needs to work on his crossing just like Walker. Both could do with learning just to at least stand it up and let the striker attack it. Both of them are constantly trying to wip it in and its going nowhere.

Might very well be the case, but this is the situation we find ourselves in. And unless Sherwood wants to make himself unpopular by moving Vertonghen back out to left back or Zeki Fryers is further along in his development than he's actually shown so far Rose is the best option we have.

ok i'll rephrase..

So i'm the only one that thinks Rose is a good left back?

He's had spells where he's looked like a really capable left back, his first run of games for us was excellent.

But he's also made plenty of mistakes and sometimes is a bit rash with his decisions. Got a desire to win but can sometimes get a bit too pumped up and he gets a rush of blood to the head.

I think he's got a good chance to show his quality now for the rest of the season but I think if he maintains current form we'll definitely look for another option in the summer. He needs time to mature and I think playing in our defense he's not got an experienced head to talk him through it a la King and he isn't getting that much cover, yet still goes forward a lot leaving us exposed.

Seems like an average or slightly below average PL quality left back to me, with some talent to improve considerably. On a larger scale that's pretty good... Right now, for us, I think we need him to improve sooner rather than later.

The soonest we can do that (unless Fryers or Naughton make a Robert Johnson-like deal with the devil down at the Crossroads) is the summer.

At the start of the season I said that a team with players of the quality of Rose and Townsend in such key positions won't finish top 4.
I stand by that.

So i'm the only one that likes Rose?

No you're not. Rose is fine, for some reason it seems our full backs always get special treatment on here. People trash talked Walker for a good two seasons when in reality he was a decent full back, then all of a sudden he's just turned into a good player this season. Seems it's Rose's turn now....
