*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland, Saturday 7th December KO 17:30***

It was Parry (rather than Tyler) in the UK.

still awful though!

Silence when we scored, he really didnt want us to win, lets face it after AVBs outburst when were not going to get any credit in the media now

Siege mentality, nobody likes us, who cares, I like it being like that

Not at all. We played very well, but Sunderland had to come at us once that second goal went in, which allowed us to do the one thing we are always likely to do well: counter-attack. I'd like to think AVB gave them a kick up the **** and the boys responded to that. However, I do invite you to consider what would have happened had Sunderland gone into the break 2-0 up, and emerged set up in those dreaded two banks of four again. Would we have had as much space as we did today?

Overall, it was a fantastic display, with individual errors saved by a good team performance and luck (yes, luck: OG right after the break) at vital times. Good day all around.

Another point...Sunderland were 'coming at us' at 0-0 and we were very obviously slowing the game down when we could have flooded forward to take advantage in the first half.

But second half, you see Walker and Naughton making runs forward, Dembele breaking beyond the forwards and we completely overwhelm them. I'd be seriously embarassed if I was a Sunderland player tonight, such was our domination and ability to create clear chances on their own ground.

City have lost at Cardiff,Villa and Sunderland
Spurs have won at Cardiff,Villa and Sunderland How bizarre

The fixtures that both Arsenal and Spurs have played have yielded 6 wins out of 6 possible for both teams:

Home: Hull, Norwich
Away: Cardiff, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Sunderland

Next weekend we play Liverpool at home, which Arsenal won, while they travel to Emirates Marketing Project...

Eh? Altidore fell deep to help form a five-man Sunderland midfield when not in possession, most of their chances came from punts forward being brought down and passed inside to onrushing attackers, and the goal we conceded was easily avoidable. It was a counter-attacking performance from Sunderland from the start, which we seemed reluctant to drive at and open up. Their goal was one of two good chances they had, and it was two goals right before and right after the break (the most horrible times to concede, as manager after manager has emphasized) that forced them to come out and bloody face us, at which point the game ended as a contest until the final minutes.

Look, you think this slow, laboured first-half approach is deliberate, I think it's unintended. Individual errors are proving to be our Achilles heel this season, and I cannot for the life of me imagine that AVB would trust our team to avoid them for an entire half before finally letting them play and smother the opposition. I cannot. Imv, the lads were unmotivated and listless for the first 40, had a rocket fired up their arses by the goal, responded well, received another rocket from AVB at half time, immediately got a stroke of luck and then played with purpose, desire and intent. It's still a good job by AVB to turn the team around at half-time like that, but I really don't think he intended this 'slow first half' thing to begin with.

Re todays game.

Okay it may have only been Sunderland, but that for me was one of the best halves of football we have played this season. The 15mins after the goal we were excellent in fact, their subs stopped our flow for a while.
Holtby ran himself into the ground pressing from the front, it makes a difference, Defoe was doing on his own at the end and was getting frustrated.
Its a shame we didnt have the winning margin we deserved. 4-1 would not have been unfair.
Townsend to start on the left v Liverpool, got to be worth a shout.

I have been harsh on AVB and our performances of late, but hands up and credit wheres its due, 2 away wins on the bounce, whoever the opposition was, is very good.
11 changes on Thursday please Andre, asbolutely no need for any of next Sundays team to be starting v Angie.

2 massive league games coming up which will show us how good we really are. Performances like the 2nd half today v Liverpool and Southampton and we will right back in the mix

There were many times Sunderland had bodies forward in the first half and we had the opportunity to counter, but didn't take it. See the early pages of this thread - lots of people commenting our countering is too slow.

I think AVB does trust our team not to commit individual errors. But even if they do, we can usually come back from a goal down and did it a fair few times last season. 2 goals is obviously more difficult, but it's difficult to come back from 2 goals down using any approach.

There is a clear, clear difference in the positions the players take up, the speed of their passing, the choices and runs that they make in different periods of the game. It is deliberate. It's so we can attack the opposition with increased intensity when they are at their weakest. It's near enough fact man, it's not my opinion. It's been documented.

You could tell in his voice he didnt want us to win that game. And some of his commentary and info today was abysmal, how does he have a job

A Gooner to boot!

Are there any half decent commentators out there?

Sam Iwanttopunchyourface, Martin "doing it the right way" Tyler, the clownshoe today, the BBC mediocrities, Clive bloody Tydlesley.

Useless to a man.

can't wait for Sunday.

we seem to be back on the horse, just.

which Pool will turn up: the one that's putting 4 and 5 past people or the one that got shafted at Hull.

plus they are missing Sturridge and I guess Gerrard.

No match analysis from me only to say that I'm loving the effort AVB and the boys are putting in . Sure, there's plenty to be worked on and no doubt there will be other bad runs along the way but I do believe in the methodology of the coach. We will get better and soon enough ( hopefully), we will give one or two of our opponents a good hiding and then we will all value the importance of the confidence factor. Patience is required.

Also well done to the Spurs supporters at the game , you were excellent . =D>

It's a funny old game... Fingers crossed that our forwards find their shooting boots, our defence stops dropping clangers and Emirates Marketing Project give ARSEnal a good hiding!

we had the opportunity to counter, but didn't take it.

So we could score goals, but deliberately choose not to in order to 'increase our intensity' in the second half.

I think AVB does trust our team not to commit individual errors. But even if they do, we can usually come back from a goal down and did it a fair few times last season.

Se we are completely fine with going 1 goal down and then trusting in our 'higher intensity' to score more than the opposition in the second half, even though our entire team has just one more goal than Luis Suarez alone this season and even though we evidently can't finish for toffee even when we do make chances.

It's so we can attack the opposition with increased intensity when they are at their weakest.

Masterful strategy: "Lads, here's the plan. Go one nil down as soon as you can. Don't take any counter-attacking opportunities in the first half, even if they present themselves to you on a plate: we'll wait for the second. Once the second half begins go out there and be intense, so we can score two goals to their one." Essentially, throw away a half and start from one nil down so we can 'attack with intensity' in the second half.

There are an awful lot of illogical points to this 'strategy', surely? We have 90 minutes to score as many goals as we can. We basically throw the first forty five minutes away and wait for the second forty-five to start playing. We have chances to score goals in the first half, but we deliberately bumble along to avoid scoring them because we're so intent on 'increasing the intensity' in the second half. We're even okay with starting from 1-0 down after 45 minutes.

That is a very, very strange strategy to pursue. Flat out illogical, actually. I don't think AVB is a fool: far from it, I think he's one of the most intelligent men at the club. Ergo, I cannot believe that, having looked at the countless individual errors we've committed this season, he says 'no, don't worry, THIS GAME will be the one where we won't make any'. I cannot believe that, having seen the opprobrium the fans, the media and the wider footballing public have heaped on our lack of goals, he says 'Also, we will throw away the first half so we can be INTENSE in the second'. And I cannot believe that he believes that we can overcome both our individual errors and our lack of cohesion in front of goal to regularly reverse 1-0 deficits like we did today. Cannot believe it.

Yes, we probably play better in the second half: we run faster, pass faster, and make better choices. That is probably because AVB turns things around at half-time after regularly lethargic performances, in all probability by shouting loudly. It is likely no because we decide to surrender one entire half of football to play with some 'intensity' later on.

Well done =D>... Can't you also do the next one versus Liverpool or don't the rules on here allow it ?

The rules says you can't do two in a row, but ideally you should wait longer in order to fully recharge your match winning powers.
