OMT Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea, WHL, Sat 28 Sept

sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

f ing sweet.....Why don't we ever take advantage......eWhy doesn't the coach empahasize this was the chance to go TOP

......50 odd years.............sweet..............

it was against ****ing Chelsea ffs. A team with more talent amongst their squad than everyone in the league bar Emirates Marketing Project. We went 1-0 up and done well for the first half an hour in the game. Chelsea BATTERED us second half, theres no talk of "advantage".. Mourinho played a better tactical game in the second half. It's funny that after a hard fought draw against one of the best teams in the world, spurs fans still have something to moan about.. "why didnt we take advantagezz!11!!" - erm, because we didn't. Neither did Chelsea, if they did we'd have lost.

Eh. Decent point, all things considered. Have to be a wee bit disappointed at the way the second half played out, though. Jose out-thought AVB to an extent: by putting Ramires in the lumbering Mikel's spot, he instantly dispelled most of the superior levels of energy and movement we were mustering, due to Ramires' seemingly limitless stamina, speed and agility carrying him around and into our central duo with ease. And by putting Mata on and putting Hazard central, he forced Dembele and Paulinho to come a bit deeper to counter the overload Chelsea had in front of our back-four (with Lampard, Mata, Oscar and Hazard all drifting into central pockets), which then again played into his hands because Ramires was freed up even more and began bursting through the central midfield with ease.

Because of this, our centre-backs had to watch more players than just Torres, which forced them to stand off rather than stick close, which then led to Torres getting a lot more space to turn and run at them, which led to us conceding space and impetus.

All because of one change. And, to be honest, I never felt AVB got a hold of the situation from that point onwards. Dropping Sandro into that spot in front of the back line felt like the most natural thing to do: sure, we would concede attacking movement, but we wee 1-0 up in a difficult derby game with things starting to go against us, necessitating and anchor, and anyway we could have added Holtby and Defoe later to reintroduce some attacking spark. Sandro would have tracked the runs of Torres better than Daws or Verts did (due simply to his agility and pace) which would have freed up Daws and Verts to concentrate more on stopping Chelsea's playmakers dropping into holes in front of our back four.

But AVB waited too long, which led to us surrendering possession time and again, surrendering our tempo and surrendering the impetus, which led to their goal from a free-kick. And even then, his changes were somewhat bemusing. Holtby wasn't that much more solid than Eriksen was, and Defoe failed to impact the game after being given only fifteen minutes. Chadli for Townsend killed our direct running. This is not because those players aren't good or attack-minded, but because we simply couldn't get the ball often enough to give them options. Ramires would recover it time an time again, which thwarted our nascent attempts at restarting our first-half machismo. That could conceivably have been avoided had Sandro come on.

So, in the end, it felt like we were saved by the sending-off, and Chelsea's increasing vigor would probably have seen us concede again before the end had that card not happened. And after leading 1-0 at half-time, having played some fabulously fluid football, it felt like a bit of a let-down, that.

It is a decent point in the end, and puts us top for a few hours. And certainly, we deserved a draw based on our fantastic first-half performance, so no complaints are needed. But, it is important to take away two lessons from that: namely, that we have a long way to go before we learn the tricks of the trade necessary to become title contenders (Chelsea's riling up of our lads and the resultant motivation it gave them was admirably effective, albeit ****ish), and that our lovable AVB still has a little while to go before he can justifiably claim to be on Jose's level. Hopefully the next time we meet them, AVB will show Jose a few twists of his own, and then we'll be the ones turning it around and starting to batter them.

Umm. Not saying i disagree with that but i am not sure i agree either. If they had swapped jobs today do you think we would have won the game ?

Agree with this. A draw is a good result, but really we handed them the initiative - I think mourihno got the 2nd half tactics spot on.

Once Mata came on would have liked to see us go to the same formation as against Palace and Swansea, with Sandro, Demb and Paulinho to block the midfield…could have had eriksen left and Townsend or Lamela right…would have made the game more even and could then have planned a late sub to go more attacking.

He saved Mata just for this game...so he would be screaming out of the blocks......

One of AVB's worst moments at Spurs IMO. Where was Lamela? Where was Sandro? Taking Townsend off was a strange one.

I agree with Mumorn. Chelsea battered us in the 2nd half, point is a fair result.

**** refereeing too. Not booking Torres for applauding him and that 2nd Torres yellow card was macaronic.

While it's easy to sit here and call for Sandro to come on, if AVB had done that we'd have lost one of our front 4 to become 4-3-3 at home and people would be complaining about a defensive mindset and no creativity. Dubai makes a fair point that you gotta do what you gotta do given circumstances, but it would still have been criticised.

The Chadli/Townsend substitution shows this was in AVB's mind - he wanted to keep the more offensive shape, but change forward personnel to try and force something. He probably picked Chadli because of how he looked in training, and whilst I'd have preferred Lamela, we can't know. Holtby for Eriksen was an excellent sub at a good time, as was Defoe/Soldado.

The main problem today was parts of our spine played poorly: Dawson, Paulinho, Eriksen and Soldado. Other parts played well: Lloris, Verts, Dembele. But the overall effect was we lacked composure at the back, Pauly's transitioning in the middle, and Eriksen/Soldado's bite up front. You're gonna struggle in those situations.

Chelsea aren't their team of old. We were at home. They were down to 10 men for the last 15 minutes (including stoppage time) of the game, giving us a major advantage. When they were down to 10 men they didn't even "Park the Bus". I think people can feel justified in being disappointed that we didn't take a golden chance to get one over one of our main rivals. Even when they went down to 10 men it was like we had settled for a point.

Come on mate, Mourinho has won titles in every country he has managed in. I like AVB and Mourinho is a **** but to claim there are equals (not saying you are) is ridiculous.

Problem was I think AVB was determined to get Chadli on to get some game time. Sigurdsson had scored and Townsend was the easy sub choice as he had been booked.

Personally I think Sigurdsson had a generally poor game, despite the goal and a good shot just wide, and I would have liked to have seen Townsend switched to the left to run at the already booked Ivanovic and brought Chadli/Lamela on for Siggy.

I would like to say that I thought Lamela and Defoe both did well when they came on, but they simply weren't the right subs we needed. Sandro should have been on the moment we lost control of central midfield.

They arent though but they still have a more talented team than ours as well as a more experienced manager who is one of the best in the world. Beign down to 10 men meant **** all for them, they were bossing us in midfield, thats why they were destroying us in the second half, a striker being sent off meant nothing. It's only disappointing if you expected us to win 5-0 or smash them, but if we are being REALISTIC, we were going to have to play alot better if we were to beat Chelsea today, we were good for 30 minutes but I dont think that 30 minutes was particularly good enough to defeat Chelsea.

Mistake - We were being overun by them and Sandro never came on.

Mistake - Townsend having a great game and taken off for Chadli which was baffling.

Mistake - Lamela not getting on at all.

You can see the reasoning behind all 3 of these though. THey're not baffling like Redknapps.

Sandro never came on because he didnt want us to be too defensive. We needed to keep possession better at that time.
Chadli came on because he wanted a more physical player to help us win back the ball higher up the pitch.
Lamela didnt come on because he's way too new to English football for a game like this, and we werent getting the ball at the point anyway, lamela wasnt gonna help us get possession back off chelsea.

Great first half pretty poor second half, happy with the point.

I can accept against the top teams more often than not you are not going to be in control for the whole 90, i just thought it was a shame that our performance dropped so far. Part of that was Chelsea stepping it up for sure but when we had the ball our passing wasn't as good 2nd half and we really struggled to hold any kind of possession. Obviously the complete lack of marking on Terry for their goal was disappointing.

I do wonder whether AVB leaves it a little too late too make changes. It worked against Cardiff last game but you could see we couldn't get a foothold in the game for a long time before Chelsea got the equaliser and i was really suprised to see Chadli bought on at that stage. I struggle to see how that was going to get back any kind of initiative.
As it happens our struggles continued until the red card.

I think this games show we are certainly going to be up there. Theres a lot to be positive about and we are currently top of the league. COYS (and swansea).

I'm very dissapointed...we here this year in year out...a lot to be positve from!....

Was Erikson too knackerd to continue...and why did we pay 30mill for Lemela???????

Mourinho always likes to play with at least one defensive midfielder. His golden Chelsea team had Makelele AND Essien in it.

Yes mate i know but there is a huge gulf in class between Makelele/Essien(old version) and Jon Obi Mikel.
Another point is that the Russian wants Chelsea playing with style and flair. The difference when Mata came on was there for all to see. Mourhino ceded the fist half to us with his poor selection of Mikel.
I think if Mourhino has some indifferent results he will be on thin ice very quickly.
Lets face it, he has a huge squad of very talented players with a winning mentalilty already instilled. He really shouldn't fail especially where Benetiz and Di Matteo succeeded.

Your logic is flawed in my opinion.

Having a ball winner in the team allows your team to retain possession better. Sandro on for Eriksen would have allowed to Dembele to be pushed further forward and potentially allowed us to win and retain possession further up the pitch.
Chadli isn't any better defensively than Townsend, including winning the ball further up the pitch.
Lamela's lack of experience in the English game is no different to Chadli's.

Great game, disappointed about our failure to wrest back control and the fact we did not press harder in the last 10 minutes, Defoe was on the left wing for most of the time when he came on what was that about.

Great game I thought, everyone played well. The usual Mourinho teamtalk of telling his players to kill the other team worked IMO. They clearly had Marvel juice at half time and came out more possessed.

I do think there was two mistakes, Townsend should not have come off, and Eriksen should have come of on 60 and not 70. Eriksen wasn't closing like in the first half, Sandro should have been brought on to counter Mata, thus going Sandro, Paulinho and Dembele on Mata, Hazard and Oscar.

because we put Siggy on the right and Chadli on the left. Chadli likes to cut in, Defoe likes to move outwide.

eh? what team had a player booked for diving and another one holding his head indicating he had been hit there when the players arms was about half a metre away?

Rent boy should have been off twice in that match, that Shirley lass dived 4 times as much as our entire team and she was a sub. Pushing before every header, blocking players off the ball, haranguing the ref, playing a racist, I could go on for a while.

If that's what it takes to win the title, I'll take 2nd thanks.

Disappointed not to win when we had the lead, that's always going to be the case.

I thought Chelsea showed some class in the second half, they're obviously a good side and they upped their performance and made us struggle more than any team so far this season.

Not great games from Dawson and Paulinho, thought the rest were reasonable to good at least. Could have been completely different for Paulinho had his shot in the first half gone in as he was good in the first half. Hugo was excellent.

Always going to be questions asked after we gave away the lead. Why no Sandro? Why Holtby for Eriksen? Why Chadli for Townsend? No easy decisions in a game like that though and overall I think AVB did well and I'm sure him and the rest of our coaching team had good reasons for doing what they did. Making it out like these were massive and obvious mistakes seems silly to me.

Agreed. Torres was obviously out of control. ****ing scratching Vertonghen's face like that? Probably won't be given a retrospective punishment, but he ****ing should get one. Disgraceful behaviour.
