Huddlestone

its an opinion though, and i think he's entitled to it

have to say if he really thought it through..i think he might change his mind some.

I must admit that the original post was a bit OTT but having said that, can you really mention one game against a top 6 team in which Huddlestone dominated? Sure he would come up with the Hoddle-esqe pass from time to time and a gobsmaking pile driver from time to time but I too think he was only good enough for the mid-table Spurs of 5 or 6 years. We moved on and up - he unfortunately didn't

Arsenal, Chelsea, City in the 09-10 season. There's three of them in the space of a month.

I have to say I missed the City game (I know, I know) as I was on a flight to Miami, but I don't remember him 'dominating' the other two games. 'Played well' yes, but I wouldn't go as far as to say he 'dominated' them. Just a personal opinion. I'm with Malteser on this, he just hasn't done enough in the big games for me.

Though, I wish him well and hope he gets a decent move after a season at Hull.

It is a bit sad we're losing our English core though. But at the same time, there is little English talent coming through worth paying through the nose for. English purchases represent dire value for money ATM. I guess it's not necessarily a 'Buy foreign' policy we've instigated as such, more a 'Buy the right player, at the right price, regardless of nationality'.

I'm very interested to see how they all mix come Sunday at 1.30pm.

A little while back I would have really been disappointed with him moving on (potential, going to come good etc).. Right now I am not feeling that bothered. I actually hope this is Tom forcing the move rather than us having a clean out.. I feel he needs to want first team football and wanting to prove a point to everyone. He came across as sitting well within his comfort zone most of the time, playing some games, picking up some money blah blah. Just didnt come across as wanting it enough for me..

Well surprise, surprise... you must be disappointed...

Dominate those games? Really? He was decent - but the real driving forces in those three games were Modric and Bale plus the outstanding saves of Gomes.

Take a look at the minute by minute match report of the Arsenal match: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2010/apr/14/tottenham-arsenal-premier-league-live; not even one mention of Hudd

he was so dominant in that game he had the time to do the MBM for the guardian himself, hence lack of his name, very modest is Hudd

I think you and I mean something different by "dominating" then.

Did he beast them like Gattuso or Mascherano would? No, of course not. But then I hear Jimmy Greaves wasn't very good in goal - didn't stop him being a great forward though.

Let us take your own comparision.

Guttoso and Mascherano are what? Yes, they are defensive midfielders

Jimmy Greaves was what - a goal poacher per excellance!

Now what position was Hudd playing in those and practically every game for Spurs - was he striker? a goal poacher? well he wasn't was he? he was actually a defensive midfielder who did not do anything of note in the Arsenal game that merited a note in the report.

But then you will never admit it, will you?

If he was really the player who you eulogised for so long, could he only find a promoted side willing to pay a measly 5mill for his services...

I will really miss these debates with you ;)

Or simply see things differently...

See that great balloon faced prick at Hull has said Tom can be an England regular at Hull. He should just try and keep them up rather than try to imply he can make him into that type of player. Every year he gets further away from that United job.

Of course he wasn't a defensive midfielder.

Fortunately this isn't the 1980s and we're not restricted to the deepest lying midfielder having to be defensive.

Hudd's a deep lying playmaker and always has been (except for short stints in defence) - I suspect he always will be. Expecting him to be a defensive beast is as silly as expecting Greaves to be a good keeper or Mascherano to make a good target man.

Seeing as he partnered Modric who was our playmaker and was flanked by Rose and Bale - who had defensive midfield duties then if not Hudd? But let's humour your post ...

If Mascherano was your gold standard of a defensive beast then I guess you will agree that Pirlo is the yardstick of a deep lying playmaker. This is what the report of a deep lying playmaker dominating a game looks like, my dear Scara: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2012/jun/24/england-italy-euro-2012-live. Compare it with the minute by minute report of the Spurs Arsenal game where Hudd isn't even mentioned.

But then I am sure you will never agree

The defenders of course.

I'm sure you don't really need modern football to be spelled out for you, but just in case:

The forwards and wingers press from the front. Modric harries from an advanced position (something for which he is repeatedly underrated) and Hudd mops up interceptions behind.

That way, when we do win the ball back Hudd is in space to make a pass and turn defence into attack quickly. There's not much point giving a DM's (I use this in the typical dinosaur English use of the word) responsibilities to the guy making that pass because if he wins the ball he has no space to make it.

I have no interest in the gin-addled ramblings of a 'journalist' who dislikes Spurs writing for a newspaper with less intellectual integrity than The Sun. Especially not when he's talking about matches I actually watched.

But as you make the Pirlo reference let's go with it.

What do you consider 'DM' Pirlo's responsibilities to be? Or because he's not English does he not have to conform to the dinosaur rules about mud on the shirt, etc?
