Christian Benteke

Benteke and Ade could be pretty good in my opinion but it means it's basically 4-4-2 and I dont think we're going down that route. Sure Ade drifts out but he's STILL a striker.

You have to hope we have the deal for Benteke concluded before the start of the season; the way things are going for Arsenal and their targets they might put in a late bid that outdoes us...and Benteke is an Arsenal fan after all....

It did occur to me that all his talk about a preference for us might actually be intended to prompt them to bid.

I think that the difficulty signing Ade last summer was that Emirates Marketing Project were reluctant to do a deal whilst there was a chance that another club might come in, pay the full amount and not want them to subsidise his wages. I don't think that there was a deal there to be done until the close of the window.

He was not our first choice, and there were concerns over what might happen if he wasn't the top man. Sadly justifiable it appears. The deal could've been tied up much earlier mate.

Do people think we can play with a strikerforce of Benteke AND Ade?

Definitely. Ade is further along in the development of his tactical sense and skills than Benteke is: ergo, with Benteke sticking to his position up front (to spend as much time as possible improving his skills in a position he's comfortable in), Ade would be given a license to drift around and pull players out of position, as is his wont to do. With Ade's superior ball control, you could see a situation becoming common where Ade receives the ball to feet with his back to goal, before turning his marker and playing an inside pass to Benteke/an onrushing midfielder. Fairly direct, but suited to Ade's strengths (playing arouns the box, as opposed to inside it) and to our forward-running style of play.

We would have to switch to a 4-4-2, of course, but that would definitely not be the worst thing in the world with our current squad.

who was first choice then??

i think the same can be said of Benteke

And thats what I had referenced to earlier in the thread. Benteke seems 'available' so we go in for him. Some on here said AVB must surely rate him, well I dont think so or may have only turned in the last six months. Where was Benteke before that? why didnt AVB get him in if we needed a striker, he was available for a measly £7m and AVB had rated him? doubt it.

I just think its all a bit convenient.

Because it's about proof you can do it in this league, and at a club like ours we wouldn't buy someone unproven like Benteke to lead the line when we had a proven Defoe and Ade. Villa was the right career move for him at this stage and now we know he can do it, we are the right career move for him now.

i think what AVB wants more than anything is a clinical finisher....he has Falcao at Porto, at Chelsea he seemed to prefer Torres over Drogba, last season he wanted Damaio, this summer he went all out to convince David Villa to join. Because of the way we play under AVB, we need/he needs someone to snap up half chances as we dont really create that much.

£25m isn't all that convenient

for Benteke it is as an overall package....he will come in and fit within the wage structure, he is young so has resale value, the transfer fee will be paid in instalments I guess

No I agree - I would like us to sign him. But I don't think it's just because he's available / a convenient deal.

Dont think there's a chance that we'll play with both. Our youth teams were playing 4-3-3 all last year and we've started that way in pre-season so suggested to me that thats the way we'll go this coming season. So if we have Bale, Lennon, Townsend and Dempsey for the wider roles and Benteke and Defoe for the central ones, I think we're fine. If Benteke arrives then I cant see Ade staying

To be honest, I'm not sure Ade could or should play with anyone. He has far far too many games where he's useless and doesnt try so needs to be shipped out

Good to hear. Handing in a transfer request is OK in my book. It's never nice when one of your players does it, but if a player wants to leave a club, then he should go through the proper channels... this whole "not showing up / going on strike" thing that we went through with Berbatov and Modric is highly unprofessional and makes me very wary about a player. It'd certainly have made me less excited about buying Benteke if he had disrespected his current club by not showing up for training.
