Christian Benteke

What price is that?

At a guess I'd say that if we bought him and he had a poor season we could sell him for around £10M (we managed to get that for Bent).

So if we bought at £10M-£15M that doesn't really represent a substantial loss (in football terms). If we bought for £25M then the £15M or so we'd lose is almost our record signing value - clearly not something we can afford to risk.

So in answer to your question, as close to £10M as possible with a maximum of about £15M (what he's currently worth IMO).

I don't believe I'm discrediting what he's achieved at all, merely categorising it as "Not having scored against a team parking the bus".

Until he's done that regularly he will always be a big risk. City and Chelsea are wary of £25M big risks - we should be even more so.

Well Wilfried Bony was available for £12m and scored 46 goals in his last 65 league matches - he was available but we decided not to go in for him. There were and are other options to Benteke that are cheaper and are thus a lesser risk. Would you have been happier with Bony?

While I would be satisified with Benteke I think there are lots of other options out there and I have no problem if we move on to someone else, I just wish if we are going to move on we do it sooner rather later

Then Villa are stupid. If Benteke refuses to play for them his value will only go one way.

Villa may be stupid but that really does not help us get a striker now does it?

Villa are then only as stupid as Spurs because 2 years ago Chelsea would have paid more money for Modric than we eventually got for Modric from Real Madrid last year.

Bottom line is we do not want to be bullied by Real Madrid re Bale and Villa do not want to be bullied by us.

Besides if we had a 22 year old striker who scored 19 league goals there is zero chance he would sell him for £16m especially when he has 3 years left on his contract. He would tell the interested team to jog on, exactly what Villa will say to us

If he had a bad season he would still be 23 and I would not give up on him.

But you should address the more important issue of why have we not gone for a cheaper striker if he is too expensive? I would have

I'd have been happy with Bony at that price - I think it's reasonable (especially if some of it is performance-based). I think he at that price represents a far smaller risk than Benteke at £25M but also a smaller maximum return.

I agree completely with the rest of what you said, I'd also be happy with Benteke - I'd just rather we didn't spend "tier below world class player" money on someone like him.

What are the chances he will refuse to play for them when the world cup is right around the corner? i say no chance at all.

The threat alone will be enough to force them to sell - their wage bill is already high enough to risk their survival.

I read that lambert said that look at Bent, I would do the same with Benteke lol.

Lerner must be thinking 40m turning into 10m is no way to run a football club.

i just hope should we sign him, supporters don't expect anything less than the same treatment in the coming years.

One would assume that the fact that we didn't go for Bony even though he was available for only £12 million indicates that the manager, DoF, scouts, etc feel that Benteke is a far better player than Bony.

Also I am a little confused about the points that certain people have made about Benteke not being proven at scoring goals against teams that park the bus.... Are Genk not a decent team in Belgium? (they seem to generally be involved in Europen competition these days) with that being the case then I would've assumed that a reasonable portion of Benteke's 19 goals for Genk would've been scored against teams parking the bus.

but Lerner has allowed Lambert to turn 24 mill pound Bent into 5 mill pound Bent, and considering Villa only paid 7 mill for Benteke, there will be no problem letting him rot in the reserves if he doesnt tow the line.

lol I can assure you Lerner privately is not thinking about the 7m spent. But the fact lambert could turn two assets worth 40-45m into a bag of M&Ms peanuts.

I wonder if we had signed David Villa if we would still have been in for Benteke? Which reminds me I heard that 20,000 Athletico Madrid fans turned up for presentation earlier today. Wow

id imagine we'd have been looking at a Bale Villa Benteke front three. hopefully this will now become a Bale Bernard Benteke front three instead

Benteke - 33.6 Passes Per Game, 1.6 Key Passes Per Game.
Berbatov - 44.3 Passes Per Game, 1.4 Key Passes Per Game.
Soldado - 19.8 Passes Per Game, 0.9 Key Passes Per Game.
Lukaku - 16.3 Passes Per Game, 1 Key Passes Per Game.
Tevez - 35.3 Passes Per Game, 1.8 Key Passes Per Game.
Michu - 32 Passes Per Game, 1 Key Passes Per Game.
Defoe - 12.9 Passes Per Game, 0.9 Key Passes Per Game.
Ade - 24.6 Passes Per Game, 1.1 Key Passes Per Game.

For those who claim he's an uninvolved goal-getter like Darren Bent.

doesn't tell the whole story im sure but is definitely encouraging at least
