Wilfried Bony

So remind me what happened with Michu... is there a chance we could get him?

He's an excellent finisher, very big and strong, intelligent.

Here we are, in desperate need of a striker and we let one of the most promising, best value front men on the planet go to Swansea :ross:

You couldn't make it up!

If we have a superior option in the works (very unlikely, unless it's Soldado?), then fair enough, but at this rate our options are quickly running out.... That is my concern.

i imagine that idiot will come in here in a minute and mention how after just ONE start in the african nations he failed to deliver

:ross: :ross: :ross:

Well, according to Tor Kristian Karlsen in the Guardian, he is another striker who basically does nothing besides scoring (like Mario Gomez). So, given as we were not interested in Gomez, it is fair to assume we werent interested in Bony either, simply because he does not tick the boxes (and because we already have Defoe).

We should now be in for Michu, if he by any chance wants to leave Swansea (unlikely, but still). I'm sure he'd cost less than 25 million for Benteke, and to be honest his character, intelligence and movement are all streets ahead of the Villa man. Not sure if he can play up front on his own (seem to remember him moving forward from deep for Swansea), but if he can we should at least throw an enquiry Swansea's way, imo.

He signed an extension in January. He's unlikely to want to leave now.

He was signed from Vitesse Arnhem... a Dutch team. It baffles me that anyone could say £12m for Bony is incredible value. Dutch football (defending in particular), has been shocking for several years. Scoring 2 in 3 in the Eredivisie means very little. Obviously if you have seen this guy play many many times then you would be more qualified than me to pass judgement on him, but I have a feeling a lot of people on this board are slating Levy for not signing Bony based on little more than hype and a decent goal tally.

I'd just like to remind everyone that Afonso Alves scored a similar amount to Bony but in about half the games before his move to Boro for similar money (£8m-ish back then?). There is a reason the big clubs rarely make these punts - for every Michu and Benteke there are 3 or 4 flops. It is of the utmost importance that we get the signing of our first choice striker right and with that in mind it's completely understandable that Spurs might see Bony as too much of a gamble at such a high price.

Why? He probably isn't going anywhere. If we come knocking with £10m in a 5 or 6 weeks I'm sure we'll have no problem getting him if we really need to.

If we want a Spanish striker closing in on age 30 Roberto Soldado would be an infinitely better signing and probably wouldn't cost a great deal more.

I wouldn't be against signing Michu as a last resort - I just think there are still many options to get through before he becomes our first choice.

Soldado's more mobile than Michu. Apart from that, they're even. Plus, Michu's 27, Soldado is 28. Finally, Michu's game is about technical skills, intelligence and strength, both in the air and on the ground: those traits age slower than, say, pace or agility.

I'm willing to wager that there's five, maybe six years left at the top level for Michu. I wouldn't say the same for Soldado.

No doubt, Soldado is a great striker. And as I said before, I'd be happy to have him at the club. But Michu has more value for money (if you're thinking long term), is already used to the Premier League, used to playing in a fast, direct passing side at Swansea, and is powerful, good in the air and good at hold-up play, all of which suit our current playing style (although someone slightly more fluid would suit our front three more, imo). Plus, I'd wager Michu would be cheaper than Soldado: not 10 million like you describe, but certainly in the 13-16 million range, which compares favourably to Soldado's 20 million price tag.

In my eyes, Michu would be almost neck and neck with Soldado in terms of the quality we could bring in: certainly not a 'last resort', as you term it.

10 mill for Michu??? Swansea will want over 20 mill for their best player. They sold sh!t Joe Allen for 15 mill !!
