Pape Matar Sarr

The match started at 20:00. With extra time and penalties Senegal probably did not get back to their hotel rooms until after midnight. And with the adrenaline still flowing he probably would not have gone to bed before 02:00. He need to recharge both physically and mentally.
Private jet back, sleep on the flight. Should be plenty of sleeping time on a flight of that length.

He could have been in for light training the next day.

If that was best for him and the club why didn't they do it?

He's been nothing other than an utter pro for us. Even when not getting many games last year under Conte. Even after getting subbed early. Obviously keeps himself in exceptional fitness even compared to his peers at this level. Always puts in a proper shift in games. I think he knows what he's doing.

Him and the club are in a position to evaluate what's best for his physical and emotional recovery. You're not.

Puh-lease! Scara FULLY understands the finite details of adrenaline, emotion, physical recovery, the timelines for all thus far stated PLUS how easy it is to just fall asleep on a jet (I mean, doh, it has a flat bed so, err, presto, out ya go to the land of nod)...you should know better than to question Him!

Learning to fall asleep quickly on journeys is an essential skill for anyone who does a significant amount of business travel.

Sarr's been a professional footballer for a little while now, I'd be amazed if he's still wasting dead time by not sleeping.

Who has taken it? No one in his absence has really made a strong grab for it imo.

Hojbjerg has been better than Skipp who has been slightly better than Bentancur in the last few games.

Conte would play him this Saturday but I wouldn’t.

And I am an advocate of his - he will get back on the pitch regularly but bloody hell do some work with the team first.

But none of them have played better than he was before he left is my point. Neither Hojberg or Skipp have made a real grab for the position so why wouldn't Sarr get the start once he's available again?

I guess it depends on what he is like mentally and physically after his tournament.

If he is fit, and available I don't see any issues with him going straight into the starting line up. He will give us a ball carrier in midfield.

Was he really that much superior? He played well against Bournemouth. It does not make him an untouchable.

Throwing people back in is plain daft and tinkles off those who are working hard to get a spot.

I guess its a matter of opinion but yes I do think he was and has been significantly better than the other options you mentioned. I also agree with the principle of people earning their spot but in this case he already has and hasn't lost it. He was just not available for selection.

It's bit like with Maddison did you think needed to earn his starting spot or were you happy enough with him carrying on where he left off?

I know what I'm talking about here, I have a lot of experience in the area you're opining on.

Business travel is one thing for businssfolks (who BTW often get bricky rest and often need a variety of sleeping aids/prescription drugs to have any sleep whatsoever). Atheletes and entertainers/artists work on a different rhythm. To put a footballer who has just played a top level match -especially one with a crushing defeat- directly on a jet for a journey over 4 hours, expect them to have any significant rest whatsoever, let alone allow their muscles to settle back down, would be stupid. It is why they didn't do it.

I suspect that Sarr -like many young men- sleeps well and often. I would also suggest that perhaps even he would've found it harder to sleep right after that match, let alone then enter a 'light training session' back at ours. I am sure he did some sort of warm-down the following day BTW. But the dynamics of that specific situation (crushing loss, big match) mean that it is far smarter to let the dust settle, body and mind recover in one place, take a breath and then head back to the Lane.

It can work both ways, I'm sure when British teams play in Eastern Europe or Russia they will fly home after the game at 1am or whatever, just to get home rather than stay another night in some crumbling Communist 'hotel' and I'm sure Sarr would appreciate some time to recover, say goodbye to his team mates and see family and give his local school / church / club a visit and £10k or whatever. He is a good human. We did the right thing.

The flight length is significant, over a certain amount of time is not good post-match. Flying home overnight in club context on shorter flights can work, but you certainly won't have players in for a morning session when they've got home at 4am!
